Lawyers: Rankin Deputies Tortured & Shot Handcuffed Man

Six Rankin County deputies stand accused of torturing two men and shooting one through the mouth after they were handcuffed.  Attorney Malik Shabazz made the allegations at a press conference near UMMC Wednesday.

Shabazz represents Michael Corey Jenkins, 32 years old, and Eddie Parker, 35 years old.  Rankin County deputies arrested the two men on January 24.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating the case.  MBI issued the following statement at 2 AM, January 25:

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on January 24th, 2023, at approximately 11:45 p.m. near 135 Conerly Road in Braxton, Mississippi.

Rankin County Sheriff’s Department deputies were conducting a narcotics investigation when they encountered a subject that displayed a gun towards the deputies. The subject was transported to a nearby hospital. The officers received no injuries.

MBI is currently assessing this critical incident and gathering evidence. Upon completing the investigation, agents will share their findings with the Attorney General’s Office.

His neck heavily bandaged, a silent Michael Jenkins repeatedly nodded his head as Shabazz described the events that took place on the night of January 24 in Braxton.

The attorney said no less than six white Rankin County deputies entered Eddie Parker's home at approximately 10 PM without a warrant.  He said the deputies forced their way into the home and "immediately subdued and handcuffed" Jenkins and Parker.  The two men did not resist in any way.

"What happened after they were detained was a 90 minute-long intimidation and torture session," charged Shabazz. He claimed the deputies repeatedly punched, kicked, and abused both men while they were handcuffed.  Racial slurs were used.  Shabazz said they deputies pointed guns at the heads of both men.  The lawyer specifically called out Deputy Brett McAlpin and Deputy Christian Dedmon.  However, Jenkins' lawyer was not through in accusing the police of outrageous conduct.

Shabazz said the deputies subjected the Parker and Jenkins to water-boarding techniques but used milk instead of water.  More torture followed the alleged milk-boarding as a deputy allegedly placed his gun inside Jenkins' mouth and pulled the trigger.  Jenkins sported a rather large bandage on the right side of his neck.  Shabazz said the bullet exited through that section of the neck.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation interviewed Jenkins. Shabazz said the interview was limited to the deputies' conduct.

A fired-up Malik Shabazz called for the arrests and indictments of all six deputies. He said the Rankin County Sheriff's Office was a "dirty police department."

Jenkins was released from the hospital Tuesday.  He was in custody while in the hospital.  Prisoners are usually not allowed visitors when they are still in custody at the hospital.  Shabazz said Jenkins suffered permanent damage to his eye, cognitive damage,  and other permanent injuries.  He will require "extensive therapy and rehabilitation," said the lawyer.

Parker finally spoke up: "We did what we do every day. We stay out of the way but they came and got in our way.  They called us names because of the color of our skin."

An emotional Mary Jenkins, the mother of Michael, said deputies would not allow her to see her son in the hospital.  "How many mothers have to stand here and tell people about their son because of the color of their skin," said the mother.

Shabazz said he wants all six deputies charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault.  He said Jenkins and Parker were outrageously charged with aggravated assault and possession of a controlled substance.

The Justice Department issued the following statement:

The Jackson FBI Field Office, the Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Mississippi have opened a federal civil rights investigation into a color of law incident involving the Rankin County Sherriff's Office. The FBI will conduct the investigation in a fair, thorough, and impartial manner. As this is an ongoing investigation, we are not able to comment further at this time.

Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey did not exactly give a strong defense of the deputies in question:

Multiple suspects were taken into custody and we contacted the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations to investigate the actions of our deputies. We are fully cooperating with that ongoing investigation and will continue to do so. Rest assured, if any deputy or suspect involved in this incident is found to have broken the law, he will be held accountable in accordance with the law.

Jackson attorney Trent Walker is assisting Shabazz on the case.

Everyone in the metro area knows the reputation of the police in Rankin county. If the tax payers end up having to fork over tens of millions of dollars, maybe they will reconsider making their officers accountable to the law. This case has legs, in spite of what commenters said on the previous post, the story the police gave is just not very believable. Karma is a bitch and the thug cops have a lot to atone for.

"Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey did not exactly give a strong defense of the deputies in question:"

That's a bullshit comment, Kingfish. It's not the sheriff's position to 'defend' as the entire matter has been turned over to another department for investigation. How the hell do you suggest he might 'give a strong defense', when he's not in a position of leading an investigation?

Everybody and his brother (and mother) want to get in on the lawsuit-wagon after what occurred in Memphis. It's not the pursuit of justice. It's the pursuit of money. And the ambulance chasers are at the head of that line. Git some for momma and gimme my cut.

Hell is too good for these piggies. Congratulations Rankin, you now have a brand new owner. I’m sure Mr. Jenkins will show you the same respect you showed him.

What possible story can these officers give that makes it ok to hold a gun down a suspects throat and blow the back of his head out. These assholes would make the cartel blush. All of this was for a simple drug possession charge? Hopefully the protesters that descend on Brandon will help teach them a couple things about the constitutional rights all Americans are supposed to be given.

There are 2 sides to every story, but some of these police officers act like they are at war. They don't remember they are civilian law enforcement agency

Stankin Rankin County is about to go through some things.

Shabazz - a racist that is so extreme, the SPLC gave him his own page.

Hope they get everything coming to them. bad cops are the worst of our kind. I assure you, the Sheriff and the entire department will do everything they can to first protect the deputies, then, only if and when forced, allow the system to work against them. we've given too much power to the police. There needs to be an ombudsman type agency with prosecutorial authority of its own imbedded within each agency allowed to policy citizens with powers of arrest.

Tip O’Neill said...

I’m sure the Sheriff, a congressman and a former chancery clerk will get the story straight at McLains Saturday morning at breakfast.

Anonymous said...

It’s going to be tough for these thugs to come up with a believable story for how this man had a gun out down his throat. I’m sure the good sheriff worked on it for a couple days and came up blank. That thin blue line breaks down pretty quick when actual consequences for your actions are on the table. These evil pieces of shit could have a few pages worth of charges against them: hate crimes, kidnapping, attempted murder, falsifying police reports, lynching, torture, assault, breaking and entering, falsifying evidence. I’m not sure there’s a law they didn’t break.

Anonymous said...

This will get resolved in favor of the officers. If this were a legitimate case of milk-boarding (I mean, come on), a claimant wouldn't hire Shabazz. And the S.O. would've already settled. I'm not sure how the guy got shot, but I suspect it was due to him resisting.

Clean the macho men & women out of the Rankin Sheriff office & the Pearl Police.

What do the body cameras show? With 6 officers there must be video right? Sheriff gonna have some explaining to do if there is no body camera footage...Accountability...Interesting story

Anonymous said...

Waterboarding is not considered torture if milk is used.

Anonymous said...

@2:29 - your sole reason listed for believing the ridiculous police story is that you don’t like the lawyer the victim hired. Say that out loud a few times and see if it doesn’t sound dumb when you hear it.

Anonymous said...

@2:46. Psssstt. Technology is so great now. All they have to do is get the 6 officer's cell phones and determine pictures taken, text messages sent, calls made immediately after. Didn't we just hear a story just like this.....hmmmm. the Memphis 6 officers- took pictures and sent text messages after the beating. Let's just wait for the phones to tell us a story before we get ahead of ourselves. The body camera footage would put all this to bed (cough, if there is any footage)

Anonymous said...

@2:54 PM - You are correct. I repeated what you penned and it sounds dumb.

Anonymous said...

@2:07 - and yet not half as racist as the Rankin County Sheriffs. Maybe they can get their own hate group page, I’m sure they would be honored.

Anonymous said...

Everyone is so quick to blame the officers. I am betting some of this is cooked up by Shabazz and Co. to "show Rankin County". The radical lawyers like Shabazz have been itching for some reason to have a publicity stunt against Rankin County for years. I would wait for all the facts to come out before passing judgement. Like him or hate him Bryan Bailey runs a tight ship both in his jurisdiction and on his officers. The reason he made such a broad statement is because words get twisted, you have a yahoo attorney as the face of this, and no matter what you say, you'll be wrong.

It is amazing how frequently body cams quit working at just the time you need them. Probably made in China.

Anonymous said...

If they weren't guilty the deputies wouldn't have arrested them. Period. Besides, they even gave them some milk to drink as they were thirsty.

Anonymous said...

This is a known drug house that has been a menace to the neighborhood for years. There was a homicide there a couple of years ago. I doubt this fella is anywhere near the saint that he claims to be. I’m sure the facts will come out.

Rankin SO, and especially Pearl, are the most psycho violent Leo’s we have around here. I have a video on my office desk right now that I’m struggling over the decision of whether or not to put it in the hands of the media. Body Cams and Dash cams of a brutal ass kicking and tazing. Including all the shit talking before and after the beating and the play by play description after other officers arrived. Absolute savages.

Anonymous said...

@3:14 - the officers could clear this up real quick by releasing the body cam footage. I assure you the feds have that footage if the officers had their cameras turned on, so the fact that they opened a civil rights investigation points to the victim’s statement being factual. If they didn’t turn on their cameras, it points to a willful plan to torture and murder these men so it’s going to be impossible to believe the officers’ story. I can’t think of any reasonable explanation for a police officer to have their gun in the mouth of a handcuffed suspect. This is looking like the worst case of police torture that has come to light. Couldn’t have happened to a better bunch.

Anonymous said...

I'm not saying the cops are innocent. I am saying it is dumb to hire someone like this to be your lawyer. https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/individual/malik-zulu-shabazz

I don’t trust RCSD or that clown Shabazz. But this is about the only time the community comes together and can produce witnesses and that they saw everything.

Kingfish said...

What makes you think there is body cam footage?

Anonymous said...

KF, I doubt there is body cam footage. Body cams only work correctly when the bad guys do something to cops. Nice vice versa.

But seriously, what law enforcement agency chooses not to have body cams nowadays? Especially when they raid a house. RCSO has the resources to equip a swat team that the marines would be jealous of, so surely they can afford top notch cameras.

Time will tell.

The days of getting away with this stuff are over, Memphis is all that is in the news but a cop just got arrested in Shreveport for shooting an unarmed man. This isn’t the first time it’s happened it’s just the first time one is being charged . I am willing to bet he just got scared and his training failed him. This on the other hand looks more like the Louisiana State Police with cops gone Rouge. Regardless of who their lawyer is, it looks like these guys might get justice.

Ever since a good friend of mine, a woman in her 70s with terminal cancer, had a no knock raid executed on her house in brandon for possession of Marijuana, I haven’t stepped foot in that hell hole of a county. Shit, I'm surprised at the number of posts against the RCSO. Are any of you familiar with the name Shabazz? Have any of you heard stories like this that sound familiar? In the vast majority of those cases, did the plaintiff's cases turn out to be true? I mean, damn! Play me once, shame on you. Play me 243 times, shame on me.

This exact scenario has been played to death. "We were sitting at home, listening to classical music and having a bible study, and these 6 white police officers broke down our door and shot us....." Let's wait to see what the investigation reveals. With Shabazz involved, the only thing I can almost guarantee right off the bat is that all the deputies are white.

Anonymous said...

Consider me highly skeptical of anything Shabazz says. New Black Panther extremist.
Total racist, black nationlist sensationalist.
Where the hell did he get a law degree?!

Anonymous said...

Shabazz is trying to ride the Memphis Police wave and cash in.

Same song, different verse. I remember Carlos Moore representing a family when their son was killed by a police officer in Tupelo. Moore showed the autopsy pictures and claimed the stiches where the guy was sowed up after the autopsy was where the cops dog was biting him. It was confirmed the dog didn't have teeth. The dog literally did not have teeth. So, there are two sides to a story. I suggest people wait and hear the defense and their side.

I’ve had my run ins with Pearl PD & RCSO when I was a wild child Pearl was overly aggressive as a youngster. I couldn’t see Rankin County pulling anything this extreme. If they did, I simply don’t want to live here anymore. I’m a privileged white male and ANYONE with a brain can tell it’s just a matter of time until they come after us

Some of the deputies have faced some very serious charges in the past. One of which involves entering the wrong home in a no-knock raid without a warrant and beating the home owner, his father and a woman that was trying to protect her child.

They issued an "oops I'm sorry" and asked for qualified immunity.

I agree with other the other comments that these are alarming examples of police militarization.

Feds opened a civil rigths investigation because it is the republican strong hold county in the state. Same situation, no case would have been opened in Hinds or most other counties. Not taking a position on whether LEO did something wrong, but you know Benny's guys pushed this because of the county.

Why is it when RCSO arrests someone from Jackson committing a crime and RCSO does their job, everyone in Jackson is up in arms?

RCSO is an excellent police operation and if you don’t like law enforcement, stay your ass in Jackson. You are more than welcome to commit as many crimes as you want without enforcement and prosecution.

Everyone is hacking on Shabazz… but did you see Trent Walker is in it too? I know Trent personally and professionally and have never heard anyone say anything negative about him. The inference is that if someone hires Shabazz that means they have no valid claim? I live in Rankin and consider myself pro-Leo’s but this sounds like the typical thing I hear all the time about Leo’s beating people in Rankin.. It’s exhausting reading all the ignorant “back the blue” type comments on here. If you think everyone who is arrested is guilty then you are also saying that JPD and others have a 100% accuracy rate in solving crimes? And if the person is arrested then they deserve some type of maltreatment by officers even though they have not been convicted of anything?

"...suffered permanent cognitive damage."

Lead isn't the only thing that causes cognitive damage. More often, drugs do. And how did Shazzam (sorry, Shabazz), educated as an attorney, manage to diagnose cognitive damage?

It was comical to notice that the parishioner in the orange shirt was wearing a tie - first time since he won the sword-drills at the Baptist church where he won a perfect attendance pin.

Momma already been to three automobile dealerships...just lookin'.

Anonymous said...

@7:55 - I can help explain that for you. The victim was probably diagnosed with the brain damage by one of the many doctors who worked on him to save his life. He had a bullet go through his neck and had his tongue cut out. I’m guessing multiple tasers, torture, and gun shot wounds typically cause some medical issues. You see, typically lawyers like to get opinions from qualified professionals. When there is a medical issue, that professional would be a medical doctor.

Anonymous said...

10:10 - Since the keywords in your testimony are 'probably' and 'guessing', have you been paid by the plaintiff's attorney to offer that conjecture? Yes or No. No further questions.

Anonymous said...

If an indictment comes out of this it will break the blue wall. Which would be amazing. If someone gives up the two named deputies, the others better too or they might be looking at charges too. My guess is that all of them will eventually charged. It’s hard to get 2 people to tell the same story much less six, plus add in the cover up. Are they going to claim the gun accidentally went off in his mouth?

Anonymous said...

Please don't confuse this with what happened in Memphis. Those were thugs that happened to be police officers. That was a personal thing between Tyre Nichols and one of the cops. The thing is they used the color of law to take care of personal business. That ignites the issue here and should be called what it is. Sometimes cops become thugs. More times than not though a thug becomes a cop. They will always get weeded out, but it makes the barrel look tainted.

Anonymous said...

@10:41 - You seem to be confused. I am not testifying at a trial, I am posting about common sense on an anonymous blog. It’s too bad that is needed, but who doesn’t know that a doctor diagnoses medical issues? I’m honestly not sure how some commenters here manage to feed themselves every day.

Anonymous said...

@1:00 - what exactly makes the cops in Memphis “thugs”? Since the Rankin cops are accused of breaking into a home without a warrant, kidnapping two black men, torturing them, and then attempting to murder them, how is that not thuggish enough for your definition? Is it just the black cops are thugs and the white cops are misunderstood, troubled Christians?

Anonymous said...

I cannot take serious anything coming from someone calling himself Shabazz.

Anonymous said...

Are they going to claim the gun accidentally went off in his mouth? February 20, 2023 at 10:50 AM

Hold on aminit. Let's first have proof that a gun went off in his mouth during an interrogation. You top-water investigators, like 2:15, always seem to get ahead of yourselves and assume facts not in evidence.

Anonymous said...

2:23, This has nothing to do with race. I never mentioned it. Never put any thought into it. I have no idea the race of the deputies. Should it matter? I'm missing something, I guess.

Anonymous said...

@2:15 - Come back and preach when you have evidence that Shabazz is in possession of medical documentation or deposition stating cognitive impairment.

Until then, your speculation, although appreciated, is just that. Who's feeding your arrogant self breakfast this morning?

Anonymous said...

@5:25 - and you can come back here when you have even a shred of evidence to support your speculation. The man went to the hospital for life saving surgery. Do you think Shabazz worked on him or a team of doctors and nurses? Sometimes the answer is so obvious it’s embarrassing. You should feel embarrassed, but I’m guessing you take pride in your ignorance.

Anonymous said...

@7:35 - where did you seen that any of the Memphis officers knew Tyre Nichols prior to beating him to death? It isn’t been reported anywhere, are you friends with some of those officers or the victim? I guess your definition of thug is just a gut feeling and has nothing to do with race, you probably don’t even see color. Am I right?

Anonymous said...

I’d bet these rankin officers have a few previous blessing from the internal affairs catch and release program. Jackson’s justice system looks like the gold standard compared to the punishments officers face for some of the most brutal and evil acts. These officers are not even human, they are animals.

Anonymous said...

@ 4:43 - I looked back and 5:25 has not speculated at all. He's only pointed out yours. While you wallow in speculation, why accuse him of it? If I'm wrong, point it out.

I guess he personally verified momma has gone car shopping, that the victim hasn’t worn a tie since his youth, that the attorney is the one who diagnosed the brain damage, and that the brain damage was likely caused by drugs. Sure seems like a bunch of speculation to me, but then again, I’m just using common sense here.

Was there another reason the officers were at the house with no warrant? May be more of a Memphis 2.0 than over drugs.

The deal is this and everyone is going to miss the real freaking problem here. It's racist yes, but it's not only done to blacks, they do white people the same way. The officer in charge thinks he is above the law. They have people in the county afraid to drive anytime after dark in fear of these goons. You can bet if this crew comes you are getting hands put on you no matter what. Look back at the video when they shot the guy in pelahatchie excessive force doesn't even describe what they did. Hundreds of shots fired. This entire squad is corrupt, they have terrorized people for years black and white. People need to stop being afraid of those mf and speak up. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required.
