Do you want to buy an Ipad but don't want to pay Apple prices and don't trust Ebay? Consider a third option.
Apple sells refurbished Ipads on its websites. That's right. Apple takes used Ipads, cleans them up, and sticks a brand-spanking new battery inside. The refurbs carry the same full warranty as the new Ipads do. Apple Care is available for purchase as well. Apple Refurb page
Apple has a pretty good selection today:
6th Generation Ipad ($229)
8th Generation Ipad ($359)
Ipad Pro 10.5 ($379)
Ipad Air ($419)
Ipad Pro 11 2018 ($519)
Ipad Pro 11 2020 ($619 and up)
Ipad Pro 12.9 ($609 and up)
The best deal are probably the Ipad Pros, even the 10.5 model. They have four speakers, better displays, and a refresh rate double that of the current Ipad and Ipad Air models. Compare models
Macbooks are available as well. The Macbook Airs start at $719 while the Pros (M1) open at $1,099.
Apple will also buy your current Ipad back from you. Apple trade-in page. You can sell your Ipad for a higher price on Ebay or Swappa but the Apple offer is competitive.

Paid ads. Smh. Beginning of the end for all blogs. No support from your readers?
Wow. As if Apple pays me.
This is what being nice gets you, folks.
Best Buy has the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 for $119.
Apple is trash made by Foxconn in China for boomers and iToddlers.
Thanks KF, I had forgotten about the refurb Apple site.
2:10 is exactly right!
Thanks for trying to help, there is plenty of jackassery even on the benign posts.
GenX here, I use iOS and *horrors* Windows because most of the software I use has no other option.
@2:10 - Samsung is trash with outdated components and poor build quality. Don’t buy that disposable crap.
All my iPads and half my MacBooks came from refurb. Same warranty and eligible for Apple Care!
@4:25
It is all trash. None of the modern build quality is close to as good as American (including Apple)and Japanese electronics of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. There is a reason millennials and zoomers are obsessed with buying vintage PCs, Cathode Ray Tube monitors, and vintage hifi equipment.
The trick is to not pay the extra $300 marketing tax like you do with modern Apple.
What's an iPad?
@6:37 - what $300 marketing tax are you talking about? Samsung spends more on advertising than apple does. On top of that, Apple is pretty much the same price as all the others like Samsung and Microsoft plus they provide software updates to their devices for a much longer time frame which extends the usable life of the product. Hate on apple all you want, but do some research first so you don’t sound so bitter.
@8:25 literally defines the term iToddler
Enjoy your spoon fed baby food and walled garden, iToddler.
Now with more spyware!
I thought the vax vs. anti-vax was the current civil war du jour.
Had no idea so many people had such passionate hate regarding Apple vs. Samsung.
Maybe in 2022 we can all come back together on one collective side and unite to eradicate the lunatics who put pineapple on pizza.
@9:59
Blame the Canadians for pineapple on pizza.
However, I am glad an Australian taught me to put a fried egg on my hamburger.
As for phones, I use a rooted Huawei Mate 40 with a custom GrapheneOS ROM and OpenVPN to avoid both the Google/NSA and Apple botnet.
I am a cyber security professional
Never ever ever buy a used smartphone phone or Mac/PC on eBay.
It’s too easy to install a remote access tool (RAT) and keylogger on a device and then sell it cheap on eBay.
The personal data a hacker can collect is worth the price of selling a device below market value.
The only way to guarantee that a RAT is not installed is to remove the SSD which isn’t possible in Apple devices.
@9:12 - If apple is too much for your parents to afford, then buy something else. Your coolness is not determined by your phone brand, no matter what the popular girls at school tell you.
@12:16
Perfect description of the Apple Marketing Tax.
Imagine basing your technology purchasing decisions on the opinions of teenaged girls!
KF, thanks for sharing this info. Baby Boomer here. I enjoy my iPad and iPhone but never sure who to trust so probably end up paying too much. Despite all the unnecessary comments, you helped two people by sharing today. Spouse and I both need upgrades. Thanks for this!!
Trash? I know people who use their Macbooks for 5-10 years and are quite satisfied.
Kingfish,
10 years ago you could upgrade the memory and hard drive in your Macbook. Thereby increasing performance and extending the life. Today, Apple solders those parts to the logicboard. This renders Macbooks without an upgrade path. If you buy a Macbook with 8gb of RAM today then you are stuck with it forever. Want 16gb today? Thats a $200 premium when 32gb of DDR4 is $200 on Amazon. Same goes for an SSD. You can buy a 1Tb SSD for $100. Apple charges $400 for a 1Tb SSD that is soldered and not replaceable.
In the PC world, only the cheapest and crappiest laptops solder down the memory and SSD.
iToddlers aren’t expected to know better and are willing to pay an insane premium for the logo.
But it makes perfect sense because Macbooks are made in the same Foxconn factory that makes the $400 Acer that Walmart sells with the same 8gb of soldered memory and a 256gb soldered SSD.
I know. I use a Republic of Gamers windows laptop because the specs are quite good and it performs similar to a Mac. However, many many of my readers use Macs so this post is for them. The Ipads are far superior to the Android tablets and yes, I've had both. I don't store much on Ipad so I never really worry about the memory limits.
@3:59 - the ssd that apple uses in those laptops cost far more than $100, and I’m sure you know that. Laptops are largely not user serviceable and I doubt that more than 1/1000 laptops is upgraded by the owner. Call Apple users all the names you want, but my 2013 MacBook still performs very well because they are optimized for the software they run. Stick with the cheap stuff if you prefer, but you get what you pay for. If you want a similarly spec’d out pc, you can easily spend more than $2k. Apple computers are not always the best option depending on how the consumer plans to use it, but for many people it is hands down the best option. There’s a reason people who buy apple once typically stick with them.
