Dr. Woodward: Mississippi Pandemic is "a Disaster of our Own Making"

A clearly frustrated UMMC Vice-Chancellor Dr. Louann Woodward had a few things to say at a press conference today. A longer post on the press conference will be published later.  Dr. Woodward's remarks are posted below.

I'm not going to leave some snarky comment. The time for that has passed. I grew up here, have lived here all my life, and despite their obstinance, I have great affection for the country contrarians that make up our majority. It's not my place to urge any particular action, and even if I tried to, it would have no effect. I just want to say that this is sad, and if you've removed yourself from that emotion, then you need to strip away some layers of cynicism. The virus will kill a lot of people. Indeed it already has. It has disrupted life in a way I never thought I'd witness. But the cultural decay this virus has laid bare is, in my opinion, a far greater malady. What is the purpose of this whole thing if it's not to love and protect each other? We need a return to first principles. We need a renaissance.

I wish she was that upset about the birth rate among unwed mothers.

And the dope heads that show up in the ER for taxpayer treatment.

And the frivolous lawsuits against medical professionals.

And the absurd Certificate of Need process to license hospitals.

And nursing home mistreatment of patients.

And, And, And...........

It’s UMMC, they have no clue what they’re doing. Once you go there you’ll end up dead. They never update anything, have no clue where a patient is supposed to be going for an appointment and no idea what the patient is there for, for an appointment. No communication at all.

6:30 pm. said: "the frivolous lawsuits against medical professionals. . . . And nursing home mistreatment of patients.

For the last 18 years, one must have an expert report in order to sue a medical provider in Mississippi. Perhaps the lack of legal recourse/accountability is what has led nursing homes to such an abysmal state in caring for their patients.

Time to get some new talking points/grievances, or at least make sure the old ones are logically-interconnected.

The parking garage tents are being set up for monoclonal antibody treatment of high-risk Covid positive patients.

This is essentially outpatient treatment, meaning treating sick people before they get too sick they need to be hospitalized. Exactly what we should have been doing from the beginning of this pandemic with safe, proven HCQ, Ivermectin, vitamin D, zinc, budesonide breathing treatments and inhalers, etc.

I’m excited to see this step forward in the right direction. As more side effects from vaccination are made known and people make the choice not to receive the vaccine, we need more safe, effective therapeutics to combat Covid so we don’t have an overflow situation like this in the fall.

Here is the link to criteria for treatment should you or a friend need it: https://www.umc.edu/news/News_Articles/2021/08/UMMC-to-start-monoclonal-antibody-clinic-Tuesday.html

If all we were lacking was medical staff,(and now that more have arrived)... why aren't we placing ALL patients in the previously unused hospital rooms ... instead of putting the poor souls in tents down in the damn parking garages ?

Better Than Ever said...

@8:56

Vaccine side effects? Nothing to speak of. But eventually people will realize that long-haul covid is a very real thing, happening in a very significant number of patients. I've seen it personally in many patients: young thin fit ones, endurance athletes, 30 YO, etc.

And without a higher vaccination rate... you will continue to have "overflows" like this.

Overflowing ER, ICU, Morgue, Funeral Homes, Cemeteries, Etc.

The snake oil treatments you keep posting (ivermectin etc) are not proven to do anything to help patients with covid or to operate as prophylactics.

You keep posting though….you must have help the stocks too long.

I don’t want to have to contribute to a “ Go Fund Me” to pay for your medical bills or bury you! I don’t want to infringe on your freedom, bully you or call you names . You were given advice, facts and prayers, thats all I can do! I not trying to visit you while you have it and if the worse happens I probably won’t go to the funeral either.

We had to pick up a prescription this afternoon at the Byram Walgreens. There were at least 20 people waiting in line to sign up for covid vaccinations. That's a good sign. Some people are finally getting a clue about this preventable pandemic. Maybe it's the belated realization that they will have to pay their own medical bills if they get sick. Nothing mobilizes the average citizen like money.

God bless our medical workers. I don't know they can stand the back breaking work and stress. It has been 18 months of hell for them.

8:37 comments deserve a boost. Dr. W reminds me of the medical establishment when AIDS came into the population. Blame, blame, and blame.

Her comments are really stupid and condescending series of comments. Like telling gay men, "Stop having sex!!!"

Planning for the worst (Dr. W failed here); giving a realistic message to the community; giving hope and compassion to the community; jumping ahead of the public health crisis. That is what leadership is.

Clearly Dr. W has failed us miserably.

Unfortunately many people are experiencing side effects from the vaccines. Also as unfortunate, doctors will refuse to make the connection because they won’t see what they aren’t looking for.

I know of plenty of people in the Jackson area now suffering due to side effects from their vax. Eventually word gets around. Eventually docs will wise up to it. Bottom line, it should be a choice, not a mandate. Those who are mandating this new, experimental technology are on the wrong side of history… and pushing it on kids is abominable.

One can only hope the drug companies have mixed in enough placebos with the shots so not everyone will experience adverse events.

For all the commenters saying they don’t like being scolded or blamed for their contributions to this pandemic, what would you like to hear from officials? We’ve tried having local celebrities do psa’s. We’ve tried pleading and rationally explaining the effectiveness and safety of the vaccine. We’ve tried calmly explaining the dangers of an overrun hospital system. What was it going to take to make you see the obvious?

All these comments are no one wants to talk about how many kids have tested positive (vs how many tested positive last year). I’m fearful for children. Covid could end in autoimmune diseases (much like mono). We just don’t know yet). But people (esp white rednecks) in MS love to feel “oppressed” by being asked to wear a face mask (comparing it to slavery and the Holocaust, which is so disrespect) and being offered a potentially life saving vaccine - it’s like…I can’t handle the fake oppression anymore And the identity all these other “news” sites have packaged and sold people (don’t be a sheeple! Don’t do things to keep yourself and your community safe cause the government is trying to control you!)..

Maybe if the peanut gallery (civilians, politicians, celebs, and all non medical persons) had shut up from the beginning and if we just let doctors advise us, we would not have so many folks who feel that cant trust anyone.

Its sad to me that nobody wants to address the reason for the global distrust.

On July 23 I tested positive for COVID. 8 days later I developed the dreaded COVID viral pneumonia. On August 1, I was admitted to St. Dominic's Hospital overnight for observation because my oxygen saturation levels were low and my heart rate was way too high (135). I personally saw how St. D's was essentially triaging patients in the emergency room and literally lining them in the hallways of the emergency department hooking them up to IVs for the antibody infusion treatment. I was lucky to get a bed and be admitted.

I listened to both the good and bad that is being spewed about the vaccines. I was unvaccinated. I made the personal decision NOT to get the vaccine.

My personal decision NOW is to get the vaccine as soon as I can. Not being able to breathe changed my perspective on the vaccine. Though the vaccinated are still getting this variant, I was advised that getting the vaccine AFTER I got COVID would provide me much more protection than those who got the vaccine prior to getting the virus.

My point to this is:

1. Vaccinate or don't? Its a personal decision everyone must make.
2. The doctors are scratching their heads and to a large extent just don't know how to handle this variant.
3. Not being able to breathe while seeing the triaging of patients in a hospital was incredibly upsetting. I never thought I would see this in the USA?
4. Take care of your health. Take vitamins, exercise, and (yes) mask up in-doors or in large crowds.
5. I'm masking up not to protect others from me, but to protect me from others from now on until this virus goes away.

Sorry for the length of this. Everyone has good points on both sides. My personal experience with it HAS changed my mind on a lot of this.

Why has it taken so long to get therapeutics here? Why are doctors being prevented from prescribing anything that might work? People who have been vaccinated get this too. Why were people told there was no treatments before the vaccine. A little honesty about the last 18 months might go a long way towards lessening uncertainty about the vaccine. 856pm provided useful information. 935pm is not helpful at all. We have cnn for that.

The title is correct, the insinuation is wrong. Yes, this a disaster of our own making, but it's a disaster that has exposed our healthcare system that is a diagnostic failure.

For decades we have treated medicine, as a whole, like it is orthopedic surgery. Just repeat the same old, successful procedures over and over, discuss those with others across the nation and have protocols to rigidly adhere to.

We have known for over a year that monoclonal antibody treatment is the single most successful avenue of treatment for recent symptomatic patients. Yet, across the nation, monoclonal antibody treatment is held in reserve OR flatly not used as we continue to see ventilators as an option entirely too soon for a condition we now know is not simply a respiratory virus.

Just now, 18 months later do we acknowledge monoclonal antibody treatment in such a way that we provide it through a clinic setting. I won't discuss other modes of treatment that have proven successful by clinicians across the globe and I won't discuss the absolutely disaster that is the shutting down of information by coercion by the medical community from the top level down through the threat of license suspension or revocation. We have literally let people die because of some absurd condescension and lemming mentality of allowing a few to determine the treatment of everyone.

Remember, 2 weeks to flatten the curve? That was legitimate but somewhere since then, the information forced down our collective throats from on high, was not to beef up our ability to respond and handle things, was not to utilize known tools to keep people away from hospitalization, it was a singular, put all the eggs in one basket approach of a "vaccination." The information has continually proven to change with regards to efficacy, intent and adverse effects. Not diminishing the false sense of security the medical community firmly attempted to establish, the vaccines are an utter failure at control of the virus. Yet we continue to tout them while, apparently begrudgingly, using proven treatment methods..... but we have leaders such as Ms Woodward displacing the blame for the failure of our medical system to adequate address this pandemic because people, rightfully, do not trust something because the information about what it does and does not do is ambiguous at best. It is pure intellectual dishonesty to suggest that the failure to properly address this pandemic is rooted in the unvaccinated. Patients are being asked to play russian roulette when, since the beginning, effective mitigation of the death causing symptoms of Covid has been available but frowned upon by the medical establishment.

Quit shaming and do your damn jobs, stop with the therapeutic nihilism and let doctors be doctors instead of forcing them to simply be technicians providing protocol to a population of patients instead of allowing them to treat the patient one on one, for their specific health, for their specific needs.

It's time for our healthcare system to realize that the doctors are the care-givers, not the insurance companies nor the bureaucrats and untie the hands of our care-givers (doctors, nurses, assistants, etc) and let them take care of their patients.

There are a lot of negligent reasons why people are in the hospital: Driving under the influence, distracted driving, shootings, overdoses, falling off the roof, being obese, not taking your meds, unsafe use of power tools, taking unnecessary risks, etc. Why not just exclude them all from medical care?

Anonymous said...

#1: For the 2/3 of the state's population who remain unvaccinated to somehow blame the medical establishment for the pandemic is laughable.

#2: Unvaccinated folks who contract the disease should not be treated until after all the vaccinated sick people are treated and there are resources left to treat the fools.

#3: To those guilty souls: I love you, but you're still fools and still a threat.

* One took a shot at "white people"

* One decided to go down the RINO path and tried to drag in national politics into it. Something about Romney which has nothing to do with post.

@ August 17 9:35 pm and other idiots who know nothing about monoclonal antibodies:
My elderly old mother contracted covid early this year and was spiraling downward in very a bad way. Two fine brilliant Jackson doctors got her the infusion, Bamlanivimab, and it stopped covid dead in it's tracks. Within 24 hours of the infusion she was feeling remarkably well. Within 48 hours she was feeling almost normal, although a little tired, and she made a complete recovery within days.
Two weeks ago a friend (unvaccinated) contracted covid and was spiraling downward. They received a monoclonal antibody infusion, and it stopped covid's progression immediately. That person recovered fully, quickly, and is now back at work.
Hayseeds like @ 9:35 are going to get folks killed with their idiotic and uninformed posts.

I applaud 10:20 for admitting in a non-hate filled rant that their own scary illness can help others who may be on the fence.

I am vaxxed but for the life of me, I see no value in condescending doctors diatribes or politicians who are have been openly caught in lies calling us names.

But I can see value in openly sharing your own hardship, and I hope it may help others who rightfully so, feel they don't know who to trust as many in positions we formerly revered have shown they are advising based largely on who funds them.
So thank you.

I don't ever recall all of the ICU beds being occupied for those reasons. You really can't see the difference?

Let me simplify it for you. When the hospitals are on the verge of failure because 95% of the patients are unvaccinated, some tough decisions may be required for those who chose not to get the shots. If it comes down to it, the medical system shouldn't have to waste precious resources on those who willfully ignored the lifeline available to them.

Anonymous said...

9:25 I don't think anyone realistically expects COVID to be eradicated. What will happen with a large majority of the population vaccinated is it will turn into an endemic disease with small outbreaks that will rapidly fizzle out.

Just look at the statistics. 98% of COVID positive people are unvaccinated. That is an astounding reduction in vaccinated cases even when you consider Mississippi is just 40% vaccinated. You would expect it to be 40% if the vaccine did nothing, but the data shows a 95% reduction.

Just because it isn't 100% effective doesn't mean we should give up on it. If everyone were vaccinated the spread would be much less and we would be seeing case numbers in the low 100s instead of 4,000+ each day and deaths measured in days between instances rather than rapidly heading back to over 40 every day.

Anonymous said...

Here's why its not about a virus folks. My wifes company doesn't require vaccination, but their client does. She is allowed to work from home. The client company said "nope, all employees, even remote.".....someone give me a rational explanation.

Woodward has never been humble enough to accept blame for much of anything. I remember when Umc had a shooter scare that turned out not to be anything , they sent text alerts to everyone and she promptly threw some poor soul under the bus instead of doing what a leader does and taking responsibility and saying sorry for scaring the hell out of everyone. Plenty of guilt goes to “providers” for patients being sent home with no directions except “call us if you get worse”. That’s malpractice.
And yes we need therapeutic drugs to be approved by the dragging feds. And yes I’ve seen ivermectin work , too fast for anything else to be given credit for the improvement in symptoms.
Also, if we are going to exclude people from care based on past behavior , you might as well empty out all the beds in the place.

Dr. Woodward said, herself, that the ICU beds and hospital beds in general are usually 95% occupied WITHOUT Covid patients on a regular day.

12:21pm

It is a complete fabrication to state that 98% of Covid cases are in the unvaccinated. We do not track breakthrough cases, unless that person is vaccinated. We can not count unvaccinated cases prior to the release of the vaccine.

So, attempting to state what percentage of Covid cases are vaccinated/unvaccinated is purely a lie. We do not ask the vaccination status of individuals testing because, it does not matter since the health departments DO NOT TRACK the breakthrough cases unless hospitalization or death occurs.

1:34 Dr. Dobbs posted yesterday that during the four weeks of July 20 - August 16 there were 1,129 cases of COVID among the unvaccinated and 56,748 among the vaccinated. That is indeed 98% of cases among the unvaccinated or partially vaccinated. And that is not counting any cases prior to the release of the vaccine, it is only among those in the current surge.

As far as tracking, the state has a record of everybody who has been vaccinated and can match it up with the positive test. They're a lot smarter and capable than you give them credit for.

The numbers are going to be accurate.

Anonymous said...

1:34: If I understand your comment correctly, basically what you're saying is that it is impossible for anyone to ever prove that delta COVID is overrunning our hospitals, and that its because so many of us are unvaccinated.

@12:41 with the whole two weeks to flatten curve, wear a mask, etc. the reason these things didn’t work is because people only half way did them. This is one of your best KF. Thanks for opening this discussion with your headline Dr. Woodward: Mississippi Pandemic is "a Disaster of our Own Making." Learned a lot from 10:34 post on monoclonal treatment. At times I agree with those who want the unvaccinated treated after all who have received vaccines. Then I have to wonder if these vaccines will have adverse affects 5-10 years from now because they were not tested for a long period of time. I am fully vaccinated. I am in the "elderly" group. I have had chemo. On my 2nd different cancer but so far, so good. Have not contracted Covid 19 yet. Probably will get booster.

Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
