Jackson Ward 3 City Councilman Kenneth Stokes wants to rename JPD Headquarters for the late Sheriff Lee Vance.
Sheriff Vance worked at JPD for 30 years. His JPD career culminated in his becoming the Jackson Chief of Police. Surrounded by the Vance family, Counclman Stokes announced on the steps of JPD Headquarters he will ask the City Council to rename the building in the late Sheriff's honor.

Will someone please take that man to The Rogue and have Luke alter that oversized suit?
Beat Chokwe to the punch once again.
I would give anything for one of those caps.
Honestly, Mr. Stokes would be a far better mayor than the current one. Not even close.
At least Stokes cares for people.
@3:48 - once again, I'm forced to say: that ain't saying much.
An All You Can Eat buffet should be named after Stokes.
As for Stokes caring for people,,,not a chance
3:48 - faint praise, ''better than Chockwe".
But all Stokes wants to do - which I guess you recognize as 'caring for people' is to name things after other folks. (only blacks may apply, but that's not the point.) Stokes main function in city hall has been to weekly introduce a motion to rename a street, a bridge, a park, a building, hell sometimes even a bush or tree probably, after someone generally from his ward. Never mind the problems that gives to people having to change their street addresses on all printed materials - his goal in life is to 'honor' everyone somehow with a name.
Not reflecting on this move to name JPD HQ after Vance - maybe an appropriate one (even a blind hog can find an acorn occasionally). But his 'caring' does go to the extreme in most cases.
@3:19PM
Why don’t you take him? You should reach out to the councilman with your concerns about his wardrobe. It’ll be one of those Tom Brokaw-like NBC end of the newscast feel-good stories the City of Jackson and State of Mississippi DESPERATELY needs during the increased crime rate and Covid-19 concerns.
The way I see it:
1) Worries about Kenneth’s wardrobe
2) Jackson’s increasing homicide rates
3) Covid-19’s increasing spread in the State of Mississippi
@3:19
A suit is just a uniform. The oversized suit is perfectly acceptable these days. POTUS 45 had the same look. Last thing you want is for a big sweaty butterball to split his britches or pop a button and sent it zinging at the speed of sound. Best to just let them wear a tent as their professional uniform.
Far better than ripped jeans worn intentionally below the buttocks and genitalia.
For once, Stokes has come up with an idea I can get behind.
I didn't know Mr. Vance, but of the hundreds of comments I've read about his demise, not one of them had anything bad to say about him. In TODAY'S world, that speaks volumes! He must've been a genuinely good man.
Come on people, just stop it! I have no problem with the suggestion. Mr Stokes is a sincere and caring person. Just like any other politician, it’s all about what your base wants.
Both the Democrats and the Republicans play the fiddle to whom elected them ( it’s all about power and money). And the question my friend, whom do you cater too? What benefits are you getting from all your shade/ hate.
We need to work together for the betterment of All.
I could care less what a building is named!!! Geesh!
5:14 nails it. Trump and Stokes obviously have the same tailor.
Stokes (for a second time) makes another great point.
I think this is a great idea.
Naming JPD HQ after Chief/Sheriff Vance is a perfect way to honor this
gentleman's devotion to the City of Jackson and Hinds County.
Kenneth Stokes is smarter than most of y'all give him credit. If Ashby and Virgi would team up with him, one more vote and the four of them could give Jackson some hope, in spite of Antar.
Should we throw bricks and bottles before or after the ceremony?
JPD headquarters should be renamed "The Alamo" .
If he is suggesting naming it "AS SUGGESTED BY KENNY STOKES! the um, er the vance jpdhq" or similar, yep, f' him. If he is suggesting, as it appears he is, to name it "The Lee Vance Jackson Police Department Headquarters Building," what the f' does it matter who suggested what seems to be a nice tribute to a well-liked and respected gentleman? And why does it even matter what the motive may or may not have been for them to suggest it? And if the skin color of either is any factor in anyone's thinking, what f' are they thinking?
Can we go ahead and rename all the streets, buildings and the and the name of city (wasn’t it named for Andrew Jackson?) to something that suits current city leaders? The perception of doing something. A lasting legacy!! Let’s get started
457 nails it.
Kennuf does this alllll the time. It is meaningless at this point except to the person /family for whom he does it.
I have absolutely no problem with the naming of the building after my friend
Sheriff Lee Vance. However I do hope Kenneth will be more discreet and respectful of the legislative process than to so pressure the other council members by making his early pronouncements WITH family members present. It's like daring them to vote against the man's family at their time of grief. It's pretty certain the council will pass it anyway without Kenneth's tactics, but whoever accused Kenneth of being discreet?
Is Stokes planning to run against Chokwe in 2025?
Like clockwork Mayor Gumflapper's lackeys arrive to dog Stokes whenever anyone dares comment that Stokes would be a better mayor than Chowkey.
Chowkey doesn't always goes hard after Stokes because he sees Stokes as weak.
Name the HQ - or something - for Mayor Danes before naming something for a nice but ineffective law enforcement chief.
@3:28–I want one of those caps too! Maybe KF can cut a deal with Stokes and sell them and offer Stokes to split the profit.Wonder what Chockway would think when he saw a bunch of white folks wearing them.
9:50. It would result in Apoplexy.
Change every street, building, pothole, name of the city to anything you want (LumumbaVille). But, please do it in one fail swoop so we can get back to raising taxes, funding the zoo, convention center, and running businesses out of town. C'mon mane...you're wasting time doing one at a time.
"It would result in Apoplexy."
Or STROKES...
" Name the HQ - or something - for Mayor Danes before naming something for a nice but ineffective law enforcement chief."
Great point 8:32 AM.
Vance was a very decent man that loved Jackson & Hinds County, but he never did anything historic.
Danks on the other hand will be remembered as one of the greatest Mayors of Jackson.
The best way to honor Dale Danks is for the state to build a new Jackson regional airport in Madison County
and name it after Danks.
I doubt Dale would want anything within the Jackson city limits bearing his name.
Stokes has been the impetus for changing a shit-load of buildings, streets, bridges and light-poles...Yet not a single one for a white person. Racism much?
A more fitting name for the LEO building would be The Winchester-Ruger Complex.
"Stokes has been the impetus for changing a shit-load of buildings, streets, bridges and light-poles...Yet not a single one for a white person. Racism much?"
I'd put the lily-whiteness of my old ass against that of anyone, but I'll be damned if I will look for racism in black folks wanting to name things after black folks. But if that is the test, it sure doesn't say much for white folks' naming guidelines.
Just a thought, but if white folks had done even a little of that, maybe it wouldn't seem so unusual. There have some pretty smart and important black folks and some positive recognition of them would have done a lot more good than ignoring them. So if a black guy wants to name something for a positive community figure and leader like Lee Vance, who also happened to be black...who knows, maybe some young black guy will say to himself, "Sheriff Lee wouldn't have wanted me to pick up this gun and..." Even if it is only that one guy, we can all literally live a little easier with that.
It is impossible to accept a hand in friendship if it has never been offered. And yep, that goes both ways.
RIP Lee Vance.
@5:17PM
Every time someone wants to honor a black man in Jackson there’s always that one hillbilly who mentions a white man. To honor Lee Vance doesn’t take away from Dale Danks. Instead of saying Vance shouldn’t be honored over Danks, why not say BOTH men should be honored?
I don’t wanna have this conversation again.
