Dr. Stacey Klutts penned the following explanation on how mRNA vaccines work on his public Facebook page. Dr. Klutts is the Chief of Pathology and Laboratory Service for the Central Iowa VA Healthcare System. He is also a Clinical Associate Professor of Pathology and Clinical Microbiology at the University of Iowa.
mRNA Vaccines. There has been so much confusion. I'm going to do my best to explain how they work along with some relevant information about their development. It won't be easy and might be a bit long, but 'challenge accepted'.
1. mRNA is a very abundant, normal biological molecule. To tell its story, let's start with one of your typical human cells, maybe a muscle cell in your arm. In that cell, your DNA is safely packed inside the nucleus, protected from all of the biological hullabaloo happening in the surrounding cytoplasm. That DNA is the blueprint for the thousands of different proteins that the muscle cell needs to make in order to survive and function. While safe and protected, that DNA code is useless if it can't get from that nuclear safehouse to the protein manufacturing machinery in the cytoplasm. It's almost like you need a messenger molecule to transfer the code to the cytoplasm while keeping the DNA safe. Like a messenger RNA. Yep, you guessed it, that's mRNA.
2. You are making thousands of mRNA molecules right now. The fate of each one is simple. It is made in the nucleus when the cell needs that particular protein to be produced. The mRNA then moves to the cytoplasm where it is 'read' by the protein production complex. Then, like a note in a 1960's spy movie, gets rapidly destroyed after it is read. POOF. It's very temporary. It doesn't go back into the nucleus and interact with your safely stowed DNA or really do anything other than transfer that message, drop its mic and exit stage right.
3. OK, we will come back to mRNA in a sec. Let's first talk about traditional vaccines. If you want to train your immune system to recognize a pathogen and protect you from an infection, you need to introduce it to key proteins from that 'bug' without actually being infected. The immune system is really good at recognizing non-human proteins as something 'bad' and generating an IgG antibody response to that protein. The way we've classically introduced these pathogen proteins is to either inject killed pathogen (older approach) OR inject pathogen specific proteins that we make in the lab along with ingredients that stimulate your immune system (modern approach). This modern approach generally works quite well, but development is rather slow. Making those proteins in the lab is a whole science in and of itself. We don't make proteins nearly as efficiently as those cells we described above. Indeed, it can take years to develop a viable vaccine protein production methodology for any specific pathogen.
4. So, we aren't as good at making proteins as cells that are naturally designed to do so? Hum. OK. Then why not let the cells do that work for us? I wonder if we gave a few of our cells some mRNA containing the correct code for a very key viral protein if they might be so kind as to make that for us? Oh, and since it's already right there, maybe that viral protein produced by those few cells will just go ahead and stimulate the immune system, producing viral specific IgG antibodies against that protein, much like a traditional vaccine. If that worked, it would be so much cleaner of a process, as making those mRNA molecules in the lab is really fast, accurate and easy.
5. I'll be damned, it works.
6. The mRNA vaccines contain only the specific mRNA message encoding the CoV-2 spike protein, some lipids (fats) to protect it and help get it into those muscle cells in your arm plus a bit of salt & sugar for stability. That's it. No immune stimulants or other ingredients required. Ask anyone who got the shots. The shot itself doesn't hurt, as there is nothing irritating in the mix. Arm might be a bit sore later after those spike proteins are made and you get a local immune reaction to them, but the shot itself is essentially painless.
7. The mRNA in the vaccine will NOT alter your DNA. This isn't gene therapy, not even close. The mRNA is all degraded in a matter of a few days (or less) and the spike protein produced, like protein from a traditional vaccine, is also quickly degraded. There is no residual anything to create any long term side effects. As such, like any vaccine, any significant side effects are going to be observed in the first few weeks after administration. We have given hundreds of millions of doses over about a year (since trials began). We've seen what we are going to see. Like any drug applied over a large group, there are some rare significant side effects. That's to be expected. You knew this, though, because you've heard examples during those Cialis commercials. The significant mRNA vaccine side effects are few and, again, very uncommon. In the realm of pharmaceuticals, these are among the safest drugs on the market.
8. I've heard from many that they are skeptical because of how fast these vaccines made it to market. Let's talk about that. First, mRNA vaccine research has been going on for 20+ years. It's new to you, but it's not actually new. Second, we didn't skip any steps in the evaluation process. We just did them all in parallel. Huh? Let me explain. There are 3 phases of FDA trials for any drug. One to ensure it works, one to show it is safe, and a third to show these things in a larger group of participants. These trials are stupid expensive to perform. Normally, it would be a foolish financial move on the part of a drug company to do Phase 2 trials before it was clear that Phase 1 was successful or Phase 3 before Phase 2 was complete. With the mRNA vaccines, because we needed them so desperately, all 3 phases were done at the same time. There was a similar amount of data produced as typical, just in a compressed time frame. The data was scrutinized heavily, by more scientists than maybe any drug ever. There were no effective shortcuts, here, just a ton of hard work by an army of coordinated physicians and scientists.
9. Because I apparently must have 9 points in these impossibly long Facebook posts, I will leave you with this. You will be hearing a LOT more about mRNA vaccines, and not just for infectious diseases. There is promise for them as cancer therapeutics, in autoimmune diseases, allergy and more. If there is any silver lining from this whole mess, it may very well lie in the promise that this science offers us for alleviating other human diseases.

In a discussion involving a couple of doctors and a half-dozen non-doctors, one of the non-doctors asked a very reasonable and important question that I haven't seen answered in volumes of shit here or anywhere else, at least directly: "Why do you care about what these idiots do...why not let them eat horse pills and suffer the consequences?"
It's complicated, but mostly, most doctors care about, well, you. No, it may not appear that you are the most important patient of all time when you show up whining (pre-COVID) about a mild cold, a sprain from stunt-jumping out of moving vehicle to impress gals and fellow drunks, or express wonder as to why your chest or gut hurts after 30 years of fried food, desserts, cigarettes, and beer, but all patients are important. It takes a lot of training and even with it, doctors aren't as aloof as it seems. Death, especially early or preventable death, hurts like hell. Losing a patient might be an ego thing for some, even many, but it pales to the sadness of loss. Doctors and nurses are crying and sad because they hurt for their patients. So, why is it so important to help educate and inform? Why do so many doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals keep beating their heads against the brick wall of COVID stupidity? Because you - all of you - matter. Even the stupid motherfuckers.
Look, we know we cannot educate the diehard idiots, but the majority of people who are just confused and just don't know the facts can still be helped. For those who claim it is all some plot to do...something, that is not even remotely close, remotely possible, or plausible. Anyone quoting VAERS numbers other than a trained medical researcher with access to the underlying medical records of the reporting persons gets immediately flagged as a purveyor of disinformation. I can file a report saying my cousin died two weeks after the vaccination when her car veered off the road and hit a tree. Raw VAERS numbers are meaningless. Only following up with the reporters if a pattern is noticed will turn up actual evidence, and you are not privy to that information.

Myocarditis and pericarditis are very treatable, especially the later. The pain will clue you in to go seek help. Debilitating damage can be avoided if treated competently and quickly. Ordinary viruses and bacteria can do the same. And, your risk from the Delta variant are higher than the risk from the vaccine.
Just as hives, or a sudden rash or difficulty breathing will clue you in allergic reactions to any medication. And allergic reactions are also very treatable in those with enough sense to recognize they should seek medical help.
I'm amazed that so many of you don't understand there are risks every day of your life and you have to judge those against benefits of your actions.
People taking a walk can get run over but the benefits of walking out weigh the risks. You are at risk on a highway but you weigh that against the benefits of the purpose of your journey.
Whoever told some of you that life was fair and risk free and to expect perfect solutions was a nut case.
What a smart and successful people do is weigh risks and probabilities of failure against the same for success.

A conspiracy is an act that is often a crime. And when exposed, people are often prosecuted for conspiracy.

Things are looking up. Now that the Pfizer has received full approval and Moderna is likely in the very near future, the fears employers had about mandating an unapproved vaccine are gone. Add to that Biden's order to withhold Medicare and Medicaid funds from long term care facilities that don't have a vaccine mandate and maybe we'll start to see some protection for the vulnerable people in our society who are high risk for breakthrough cases.
There is no excuse for any medical professional or public servant to not be vaccinated.

Few without a medical degree are qualified to assess whether a vax is appropriate for any given individual.
So ask your Doc, don't pretend that reading fifty or two hundred and fifty paragraphs of speculation and opinion qualifies as adequate research to reach a vax decision.
I'd rather be an informed patient of a qualified personal doctor who knows my medical history than a gonzo petri dish freak OD-ing on fake medicine or a hermit avoiding reasonable treatment.
