Health Department Covid-19 Briefing

The Mississippi State Department of Health is currently holding its weekly press conference on the Covid-19 pandemic.  It is streamed below.

Notes

* 90% of hospitalizations and 86% of deaths are unvaccinated.

* Dr. Byers recommended wearing a mask if indoors.

* 70% of ivermectin calls to Poison Control Center were for misuse of livestock ivermectin.

* ICU space is "scarce."  Dr. Craig said there is still a staffing shortage.

*  State requested an additional 8 federal teams to assist with monoclonal antibody administration.

* No one has been held liable for violating an isolation order.  MSDH is not an enforcement agency.  It would probably rely on a complaint at the local level.  Liz Sharlot said "we are not police or enforcement."

8/19 British Medical Journal "COVID-19 Fully Vaccinated People Carry As Much Viral Load As Unvaccinated People, Data Indicate"..."We know now that vaccination will not stop infection and transmission". I understand and appreciate that we dont want to overwhelm the medical system...so why is an early outpatient treatment protocol NEVER provided? Is an early outpatient treatment protocol "illegal"? This "drink plenty of water" and "return to the ER if you cant breathe" shit aint workin'.

From UMMC's daily release - "As of 8 a.m. on Wednesday, August 25, the Medical Center has 131 confirmed or suspected inpatient COVID-19 cases. This daily inpatient count includes 108 adult patients and 23 children. Of the confirmed COVID-19 positive patients, 68.1% are unvaccinated, 7.5% are children under the age of twelve who are not eligible for COVID vaccination, and 13.8% are vaccinated."

So, the largest hospital in the State states that 68% of hospitalized Covid patients at its hospital are unvaccinated, but MSDH's states show that at 90%? That's quite the difference, especially from a hospital with such a large sample size.

I really wish government would stop using facebook. I do not want to be forced to join Zuckerberg’s botnet just to have access to this information. It also legitimizes facebook as an authoritative source of information. Facebook is a social media platform primarily used by tech illiterate boomers. Just like AOL was decades ago.

Support 3:21's comments about Facebook. I haven't joined and never plan to. The state support of this private, biased company is an affront.

@3:17 if your numbers are correct....68.1% unvaccinated plus 7.5% ineligible unvaccinated children (Im assuming they are not included in the aforesaid 68.1%) plus 13.8% vaccinated. Total 89.4%. And they're worried about Farmer Brown improperly calculating his Ivermectin dosage.

Thank you 3:01.

It baffles me that we have NO directive other than if you get sick stay home, and try not to die.
But if you do get so sick that you MUST come to the ER, we guess we will begin to treat you then.

Anonymous said...

The daily damn lie. Covid is real...not that lie.

@4:00pm - Pretty sure the directive was (and had been for a while now) that if you test positive, come get some monoclonal antibodies in the parking garage as soon as possible so you don’t die, THEN go home and hope you get better.

3:01 and. 4:00,

The Mississippi State Department of Health has shouted from the rooftops that anyone who is COVID positive should ask his healthcare provider about receiving the monoclonal antibody infusion immediately, regardless of symptoms. Honestly, they say it every day. Media repeat it everyday. That’s the treatment. Avail yourselves of it. Tell everyone you know about it. There is a hotline number on the Department of Health website. They’ve shared it on Twitter. They’ve shared it on Facebook. They have infusion clinics around the state. Some of them don’t even require an order from a doctor. You just go, are assessed, and receive it if you are eligible. That’s it. That’s the treatment. They want you to live and want you to stay out of the hospital.

@3:17 You have to read all of the information when you cite, not just the parts that seem to support your position. Here is the complete breakdown from UMMC's release today.

Fully vaccinated - 13.8%
Non Eligible - 7.5%
Unknown - 10.6%
Unvaccinated - 68.1%

The unknown are likely unvaccinated. That puts the UMMC ratio at 13.8% vaccinated and 86.2% unvaccinated. Much closer to MSDH figures.

And what are the age ranges? Likely 60+

4:00 - obviously you have not kept up, because that is NOT the message that has been put out.

Over the past two weeks there have been multiple - dozens - of notices that IF you have symptoms to go get the monoclonal treatment. The state (DOH, UMMC, and the Governor) have all encouraged everyone to go get this treatment quickly after symptoms at which time it is most effective. The notices also stated that you could get the treatment for free at multiple sites, including at UMMC.

Guess though they didn't have this notice posted at the local feed and seed store, so you might have missed it.

Who administered MAT b4 garage opened?
Anyone occupying beds in fed garage icu and graham’s SP ermergency icu?

@3:21

Agreed. I notice that the smaller 'forum' type websites we used to have are going away in favor of 'free' collaborative space on fb.

For the record, I like that JJ allows anonymous postings, but I think that the regulars need a blogger account to keep things straight.

They should have been shouting from the rooftops since November 2020 when the monoclonal antibody treatment was first made available. Why let the hospital system get overrun twice in the same year before someone finally decides that we need to start treating people earlier when they first test positive?

Better Than Ever said...

@10:17

Well, some easy answers to your questions pop out.

However, I find it the height of irony that people who are vaccine skeptics are falling over themselves to be infused with something that's operating under emergency authorization, just like the vaccine.

That said, MA treatment is 70-85% effective. This is less than the vaccine, most costly than the vaccine, takes MUCH longer to administer than the vaccine, and so on.

Not that hard.

For public health, you've got to differentiate between what _can_ work for a single person in ideal circumstances and what _must_ work for everyone in a wide range of circumstances.

If there is a 70-85% chance the treatment is effective shouldn’t we utilize this more to potentially keep people out of the hospital? Seems like a pretty good odds to me?

Better Than Ever said...

@7:24

It's useful and effective. But there's also a human nature aspect that cannot be overlooked.

If someone thinks there's a "cure"... what do you think that will do to vaccination rates?

I don't know our capacity to administer MA. But I'd bet you it's orders of magnitude less than our capacity to vaccinate.

With all due respect, I never mentioned anything about the vaccines. I was specifically addressing the reality we have found ourselves in again regarding the crisis of overflowing hospitalizations. This is the one early treatment that .gov will allow us to use and state.gov seemingly kept a tight lid on it until two weeks ago.

What about back in January when the death count was greater than it is right now? This was also before the vaccine was available to the general public. The antibodies should have been more widely utilized then and certainly throughout the remainder of the year to potentially head off another hospital crisis.

Someone finally woke up two weeks ago and decided to start treating people earlier than when they show up at the hospital.

MA treatment = mo money mo money mo money

what is the status of the parking garage field hospitals? Are they full? or was this just another tactic to elicit fear and panic? Seems a better use of $$ would have been to fill open positions so that all the vacant beds could actually be utilized... I know field hospitals are sexier though

Is it ok for me to be a bit cautious due to my having had the Bill Clinton Anthrax vaccine that is giving me pause ? Is it ok with you guys ? I have also had clotting issues. So I lose my job because I want to take my chances instead taking THIS vax. I had no choice in the 90's.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
