Ridgeland police arrested her for one count of sexual battery (of her child) in June 2019 and suspected her of killing one of her two children. The grand jury has not indicted Ray. WLBT reported in October:
When we first asked Ridgeland, MS police about Dacoda Ray, charged with two counts of sexual battery just weeks after her younger son, Drake Ray died of what appeared to be asphyxiation, they didn’t have much to say about whether she was a suspect in his death or even if he was one of her alleged victims.
Information came in over the weekend that helped clear the picture, said Ridgeland Police Chief John Neal. “We feel certain in saying Dacoda is a suspect in the death of her son based on the information we’ve received from the Medical Examiner’s office. The autopsy report, the crime scene itself, all that put together, she’s a good hard suspect. While there was suspicion early on, we can’t operate our cases like that and we’ve got to wait on some facts, and here recently, we’ve gotten the facts that lead us to the conclusion we’ve got now that she is responsible for her son’s death.”
Neal said Drake’s older brother was taken to Texas to live with some relatives after Drake’s death, and that as he became more comfortable with those family members, he began to divulge details of the alleged abuse against he and his brother, suffered at the hands of his mother.
The motive is has been blurry, but police say it has started to clear.
“She turned to her boys for some kind of fulfillment, and turning to her boys was an illegal act," Maybe through some disclosures that were made just before her son’s death, this may have pushed her to the brink where she felt she needed to take this action.”
Ray is not currently charged, but her case is expected to go before the October grand Jury. Rest of article.

No words can express how wrong this is.
The poor boy didn't stand a chance.
I just wonder outload if this staying at home, no school & other COVID-19 practices put in place by our leaders contributed or amplified this killing. Maybe, the mayor & governor can be charged with accessory after the fact.
Attn 8:47 Probably not since this occurred last October.
This is so awful. No child should have ever have to endure such violence--especially at the hands of a parent.
The radio silence from the JJ community on this heinous crime is the definition of hypocritical. But I thought crimes only happened in Jackson . . . and I also thought dysfunction only existed in the black community. House arrest for sexual battery on a child? Let's not even mention that more than a year has passed since the child's death and the mother still has not been charged for murder, despite the medical evidence implicating her as a "hard" murder suspect. So you mean to tell me the justice system in Ridgeland/Madison County is not a model system, after all? If this was a case involving a Hinds County Judge or a Jackson Municipal Judge, I expect that there would be at least 50 comments on this post accusing the judges of having blood on their hands. I can't say I'm surprised by the selective "tough-on-crime" approach Ridgeland PD has adopted or the selective outrage from the JJ community. Devastating.
@8:47
You are correct that this is a horrible event that should have never happened, but read the article again. All this happened in 2019, a year before COVID-19. Even if this had occurred this year during the school restrictions what would the Mayor have had to do with it? He didn't close schools. Some people are just evil and have to take full blame for their unthinkable crimes. Stop trying to put the blame on others.
BTW, I doubt this is a death sentence case but it should be and she should be executed if found guilty of her actions.
@8:47 This happened in 2019. Reading the article helps before you comment.
8:47 No, this all happened in 2019.
This incident occurred long before Covid - so let's just place the blame solely where it lies, with this woman.
@8:47
Work on your reading comprehension. This is an old story, a pre-Covid story. It is newsworthy today because she was just re-arrested.
Ridgeland is lost.
"Maybe, the mayor & governor can be charged with accessory after the fact." I love it. Anyone could be complicit in this crime based on your logic, even you possibly. Fuck the Mayor and Governor lets go after the DC crowd while we're at it. You must be one of those yelling for the heads of Judges and Attorneys who are associated with people out on bail/bond who commit crimes. Come on man, get a grip.
Madison SO was the arresting agency, not Ridgeland PD on the second charge.
Hmmm.......
Don't be surprised if a capias was served on an indictment. That would be the SO's job, not RPD.
Poor attempt at trolling @9:23. I can only give you a 1.5 out of 10. It is easy enough to browse the JJ archives and read the comments of condemnation in previous posts.
Also, crime stats speak for themselves. This type incident is as rare as a unicorn. Whereas an urbanite committing rape, robbery, and murder are the most common crimes in America.
@10:40
Your poor attempt at whatever. This blog is more forgiving on issues in Gluckstadt/Madison/Ridgeland. Yes, go back and look.
Yes, 9:23, Jackson is treated so unfairly, blah, blah, blah, the white folks keep picking on Jackson, blah, blah, blah . . . anything to avoid responsibility for Jackson's sorry condition.
@12:07
Just asking the same for the other areas surrounding Jackson. Wait did anyone type anything about not holding Jackson accountable?
Oh right...
Whatever
@10:40 - rare as a unicorn, huh? The statistics suggest otherwise.
https://www.neighborhoodscout.com/ms/ridgeland/crime#:~:text=The%20chance%20of%20becoming%20a,and%20towns%20of%20all%20sizes
Ridgeland has a population of roughly 25,000 (compared to Jackson's 165k plus) but, according to this study, Ridgeland is only safer than 28% of U.S. cities.
FBI Crime Data as reported by NeighborhoodScout: "The chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime in Ridgeland is 1 in 48. Based on FBI crime data, Ridgeland is not one of the safest communities in America. Relative to Mississippi, Ridgeland has a crime rate that is higher than 78% of the state's cities and towns of all sizes."
"NeighborhoodScout's analysis also reveals that Ridgeland's rate for property crime is 19 per one thousand population. This makes Ridgeland a place where there is an above average chance of becoming a victim of a property crime, when compared to all other communities in America of all population sizes. Property crimes are motor vehicle theft, arson, larceny, and burglary. Your chance of becoming a victim of any of these crimes in Ridgeland is one in 52."
The point of the post was not to deflect from the presence of crime in Jackson, but to call out the collective hypocrisy of the JJ community over its lack of outrage for crimes that take place in Madison County. In the final analysis, statistics trump narratives and rhetoric. Living inside of a bubble does not alter reality.
Ridgeland's crime is Jackson's crime, and won't change until the wall is built on County Line Road. But because Ridgeland is a buffer zone, Madison's crime is low.
I just checked out her facebook profile. So creepy and sad knowing she killed that little boy then posted pics of him everywhere in a weird fake shrine of a post.
Mental illness or not, there is only one thing to do with that feral female dog.
KF at 9:58 is correct: Indicted and served.
@1:31 I don’t understand your stats... my chance of violent or property crime is 1 in 48? Is that 1 out of 48 people? Is this per day,week,month or year? All I know for sure is that l have lived in Ridgeland (no not fridgewater or any elite neighborhoods) for almost 20 years and have not been victimized by any crimes and guarantee you 1 in 48 houses in Ridgeland haven’t had violent crimes against them no matter what the vague stat you claim says. As for the stuff someone said crying about blacks in Jackson not being the only criminals like this one... These types actually seem more prevalent in weird white ppl. It’s kinda like the school shooters, shit this messed up is white trash shit and I say that as a white myself. The Jackson whiners comparing a insane psycho child murderer is reaching. When metro cities other than Jackson start shooting their own constantly to the point of the news not being able to keep accurate counts and with zero regard for life then it would make sense to say see it happens everywhere. But for now the Jackson comparison would fit better with Mosul Iraq maybe. Wait, nope, less shootings per capita, dang.
@5:49 - I've lived in (North) Jackson for decades and I've never been the victim of a violent crime either. Highlighting the underreporting by local media (and the lack of acknowledgement by Madison County residents) of crime in Ridgeland in comparison to the overrun, sensationalized narratives about the inherent dangers of living in Jackson is not a reach in the slightest. I'm not ignoring that Jackson has a crime problem, but I am highlighting that the JJ community is far less opinionated and far more rational when assessing crimes that take place in Madison County. For example, when 5-year-old Kingston Frazier was tragically killed at the Kroger on I-55, I vividly recall members of the JJ community calling for his mother to be prosecuted for neglect. I also remember members of the JJ community using the Frazier case as an indictment on the family structure of the black community.
In my untrained opinion, I'll acknowledge that the lady in this case likely suffered from a mental illness. But most violent crimes arise either from underlying mental illnesses or from personal disputes, and sometimes a combination of both. Is it devastating that innocent parties suffer, and unfortunately, become collateral damage far too often? Absolutely. But this myth that the City of Jackson is inherently more dangerous than surrounding areas as a result of dysfunction in the black community is rooted in white supremacy. When are we going to stop pretending that a sizable portion of Ridgeland's population didn't migrate from the City of Jackson after Harvey Johnson's election in 97? The real reach is trying to compare a populace of 165k residents to a town with 25k residents by comparing the number of violent crimes per city/town with little to no context, as I see so often on this site. By the way, would someone be kind enough to direct me to the site where the City of Ridgeland publishes its crime statistics? Serious question. There seems to be a lot of criticism regarding the COJ's allegedly false reporting of crime.
If the City of Jackson is so deplorable to Madison County residents, why do so many Madison County residents work in the City of Jackson? Why won't the county pool its own resources to finance a local airport rather than attempting to seize control of the Jackson airport? Why does Madison County want a seat at the table to oversee and administer funds for fixing roads in downtown and mid-town Jackson (the Capitol Complex Improvement District)? Why do so many Madison County contractors seek contracts in the COJ? Why have so many law enforcement officers in Madison County undergone training in the COJ? Why is there so much news coverage by Madison County media relating to the affairs of the COJ? The reality is that the sustainability of Madison County's economy and tax base is wholly dependent on its proximity to the capital city.
9:38
What a crock.
Have a good weekend, everybody else.
OK, enough of the back and forth about Jackson v. the burbs.
I am confused on the timeline. Is the murder charge going to the Oct 2020 grand jury, or did it go before the 2019 grand jury? It reads as though it was 2019. If so, did they fail to indict her on murder charge? Was it dropped or is it pending?
