A British study determined there is little evidence the Covid-19 virus is transmitted in schools. The Sunday Times (U.K.) reported Sunday:
One of the largest studies in the world on coronavirus in schools, carried out in 100 institutions in the UK, will confirm that “there is very little evidence that the virus is transmitted” there, according to a leading scientist.Professor Russell Viner, president of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health and a member of the government advisory group Sage, said: “A new study that has been done in UK schools confirms there is very little evidence that the virus is transmitted in schools.“This is the some of the largest data you will find on schools anywhere. Britain has done very well in terms of thinking of collecting data in schools.”The study is being carried out by Public Health England and is expected to be published later this year.
About 20,000 pupils and teachers in 100 schools across England were tested to monitor the spread of the disease up to the end of the summer term....
Viner suggested another study next month was likely to reassure parents. His team had reviewed 35 studies from around the world that had examined schools and the coronavirus.
One finding has been that “children play a minor role in transmission of the virus and schools play a minor role in transmission of the virus”.One of the worst outbreaks was in Israel at Gymnasia Rehavia, a school in Jerusalem, where 153 pupils and 25 staff were infected in late May and early June.An outbreak at a secondary school in New Zealand had infected 96 pupils, teachers, staff and parents. A neighbouring primary school, however, had seen few cases.“Everything you do to reopen society will impact the national R, but reopening schools, we believe, has a very small impact on it. The majority of cases are staff, not students,” Viner said. Article.
Mississippi has reported zero deaths and only 64 hospitalizations for children below the age of 18.

On the other hand:
"Professor King pointed to a new study by Neil Ferguson, a prominent epidemiologist at Imperial College London, predicting that a full reopening of schools would drive up the reproduction, or R, number of the virus by as much as 0.5.
The reproduction number is currently hovering close to 1 in much of the country, and may be slightly above that in London, according to Professor King.
Reproduction numbers above 1 mean an outbreak is growing, and the daily number of new cases in Britain has been rising since falling below 600 in early July. On Sunday, it topped 1,000."
Yup, the scamdemic is officially over. Time to get back to normal people. The pearl clutchers and panty wetters are going to always tremble in fear. But America and our liberties have never been defended by those cowards. So nut up or shut up you disgraceful wimps.
@3:01 - Get a clue. We pearl-clutchers and panty wetters are not going to run around without masks, attend sporting events, send our children to school without proper health safeguards in place, visit your strip mall restaurant or whatever little job you work or formerly worked because we think it is unhealthy and continues to damage the economy. The economy is already so screwed by the Republican administration's failure to take a leadership role from day one of this pandemic, that it will take 5 years minimum to restore it to what it was under Obama.
You can scream, gaslight, and attempt to shame rationale citizens who have long economically provided for ourselves, into throwing caution to the winds, but you cannot control us. Ain't happening. We're educated, informed, rely on science rather than political propaganda, and largely ignore you and the media. We are not going to make it better FOR YOU anytime soon. Grow up, take care of yourself like we have done for decades, get a job, get a life, stay off the darker conspiracy edges of the internet that you access from your basement apartment and FO.
@3:38 I bet your tears will be saltier and your wailing will be louder this year than in 2016.
And our grins will be even bigger and our gloating even more obnoxious.
I can't even imagine how sore
3:38's limp wrists must be after feverishly typing such righteous indignation. Take a breath hon!
"stay off the darker conspiracy edges of the internet"
Do you mean journalist sites that expose conspiracies like Project Veritas? Just because the MSM ignores the evidence doesn't make it wrong. The hidden cameras don't lie.
Didn't we beat their limy asses in the revolution. What the fuck do they know compared to MIT (Mississippi Institute of Technology) professors that contribute to this site.
" A British study determined "
Now that statement is funny even before one reads it.
Obiwan, the troll force is strong today.
And when reached for comment about applicability of the study to schools in the US, Professor Rowland Atkissen, Bean College, said, "Well, one must realize that the study was conducted within the parameters of schools and schoolchildren, not Her Majesty's Young Offender Institutions..."
Mississippi Governor, Tate "bubble and squeak" Reeves, took umbrage at the Professor's comments, saying, "OH, YEAH?! Well, we have an Oxford, too!"
"No, you most certainly do not," responded The University of Oxford
Satire aside, a couple of serious points: such studies are both useful and informative, but just like any study, there must be substantively similar cohorts in similar environments to be able to make reasonable comparisons to non-study situations. And much more importantly, one must pay careful attention to the specifics of the study, such as:
"Our model predicts that reopening schools either full time or in a part-time rota system from Sept 1, 2020, alongside relaxation of other social distancing measures will induce a second COVID-19 wave in the absence of a scaled-up testing programme (Figure 2, Figure 3, Figure 4). This second wave would peak in December, 2020, if schools open full time in September, and in February, 2021, if a part-time rota system were adopted. In either case, the second wave would be 2·0–2·3 times larger than the first COVID-19 wave in the UK." Credit: Jasmina Panovska-Griffiths, DPhil; Cliff C Kerr, PhD; Robyn M Stuart, PhD; Dina Mistry, PhD; Daniel J Klein, PhD; Russell M Viner, PhD; Chris Bonell, PhD. I cannot link to the study because it is behind a paywall - it may be otherwise openly available elsewhere.
Put another way, this study has very little or no applicability to US, and particularly Mississippi, schools as they are currently being opened. Comparing schools like Stonyhurst and Eton Colleges to JPS or even schools like JA is, um, well, "contraindicated." In any event it is too late as Mississippi school reopening has already shown that whatever might have been, will not be. The parrot is deceased.
Congrats! Dr. Sue Townsend, Rankin County Superintendent, positive for Covid!
When fueling a pandemic, it's important to lead by example!
A few interesting comments, very damned few. The comical ones are the best. Mostly just quickly scrolling through the nonsense. It was a fun visit.
Kingfish needs to hire a 'signer' to appear in a little box in the corner of some posts.
What the fuck do you not get 3:38? We ALL have or have recently had COVID19. People with immunodeficiencies get really ill or die from it, you didn’t, move on
Yeah, only 100000 children in the US have tested positive since schools reopened. Who cares that .07% might die?
Who cares if they take it home to fat parents and become orphans? So what if their grandma dies? Maybe they won't get fat like their parents did.
And, who needs grandma when we got child care places open?
Besides, we can always put them orphans to work in fields and factories like we use to do. Make 'em earn their keep.
“As many as 1 in 3 patients recovering from Covid-19 could experience neurological or psychological after-effects of their infections, experts told STAT, reflecting a growing consensus that the disease can have lasting impact on the brain. Beyond the fatigue felt by “long haulers” as they heal post-Covid, these neuropsychological problems range from headache, dizziness, and lingering loss of smell or taste to mood disorders and deeper cognitive impairment. Dating to early reports from China and Europe, clinicians have seen people suffer from depression and anxiety. Muscle weakness and nerve damage sometimes mean they can’t walk.
“It’s not only an acute problem. This is going to be a chronic illness,” said Wes Ely, a pulmonologist and critical care physician at Vanderbilt University Medical Center who studies delirium during intensive care stays.” STAT.com. And your Children can transmit it to you and the grandparents.
@ 2:45 you're really quoting an Imperial College study? The organization that was the main driver of panic at the beginning of this with their completely overblown numbers?
Same story different day, listen to these experts but not those experts. You're a stupid, uncaring Covidiot if you don't validate my fear. Only 65 children have been hospitalized in MS with COVID this entire time. 0 deaths. Zero. Anyone 18 or under is more likely to get killed by a pack of wild dogs than by COVID. Much of the rest of the world have had kids back in school for weeks or even months. The majority of them did not have and are not having these spikes that y'all are so sure of.
11:43: You are ignoring that kids even if asymptomatic can transmit the virus to their family and grandparents. And yes kids can have longer lasting effects from the virus.
" Satire aside"
That's what makes this blog so popular !
A hell of a lot informative investigative reporting, but with funny satire mixed in.
As the title sez:
(Jackson Jambalaya
A website of news, commentary, culture, & jackassery in the Jackson, Mississippi area.)
Note the word "jackassery".
I’m all for thinning out the herd. We have too many boomers and fatties as it is. Survival of the fittest should be fun for this state.
Paid Covid Industry trolls pretending to be Mississippians, really need to stop using terms like "basement apartment". I'll let you figure out why that is.
@12:34 I was not ignoring that possibility, i was specifically addressing the danger to children. Did you even read the story that Kingfish was good enough to share?
One finding has been that “children play a minor role in transmission of the virus and schools play a minor role in transmission of the virus”.
Kids have been out of school all this time that the virus has been spreading, but you think that kids shouldn't go back to school because it might spread the virus?
10:18: I do. The kids should distance learn to prevent their congregating at schools and bringing it home.
