No surprise here -- the generation now attending Ole Miss and other universities these days do not have the immunities that older generations have (thanks to all those helicopter parents).
A professor friend of mine told me about all of the precautions they are taking at USM. He made it clear that the LAST place students are going to catch a virus is in class or in any campus building. But what students do the other 22 hours per day is the problem (such as the spikes in Oxford and Starkville long before class actually started).
Parents already rented apartments and want the kids OUT of the houise. So whether they have class or not, college towns are going to see virus spikes.
The Daily Mistake is still around?
Does this mean the Zebra Tent at the Grove will not exist this year? Now that I think about it, this might be the reason for this banishment. Maybe, if Ole Miss plays in Baton Rouge, the Zebra Tent group can get a permit to set up down there.
I thought moving that Confederate statue in the circle would solve all problems.
I'm an alum and renounced that place years ago.
Before the rest of the SEC posters "pile on", this same shit is happening at Mississippi State, LSU, Bama, Auburn and the rest of the Conference schools.
Note to Hattiesburg: this student mind set has also infected the U of Southern Mississippi for a while now.
I see this rag is still run by some leftist weenies just like it was 15 years ago when I was there. I’m so shocked
Breakouts at MSU and MUW ten days before class started. The MUW outbreak was traced to several parties in downtown Starkville. I agree, class is not the problem.
Saw a new poll today of college students nationwide. Voting for Biden 70% to Trump 18%. Mind boggling what's going on amongst young people today. As someone said above even Ole Miss and MSU have become bastions of liberism.
Interesting poll there, maybe we can learn something from these youngsters.
My 2 college granddaughters as well as my 2 adult children are all anti Trump. It’s hard to argue against them as he is an arrogant asshole. Problem is they don’t see the danger in the policies of the Democratic Party. It’s unbelievable that our two Presidential candidates are the best we have to choose from.
All your going to learn from the youngsters is I deserve free tuition, health care, a guaranteed job and salary. After all I have never had to work hard and according to my college if I graduate in a certain field I’m suppose to start out at a minimum salary of $50,000 even though I have no work experience. It’s not fair as Bank Plus learned that the new employees have to work during Thanksgiving week as they thought they were off the whole week when they first started working there.
I have explained to my kids that if they want any money to do the fun extra things they have to save it like most older normal people have had to do. Maybe some of it will sink in. Learning from this generation-uh no.
Like the man said, What's good for the frat is good for Ole Miss. Clearly.
They are spot on in this article. Cases are growing up there. Most classes are online. Freshman are required to live on campus though.
So, I'm pro-mask and caution on the virus, but these crybabies give us a bad name with all of their breathless hyperventilating. This kind of thing does more harm than good and helps me understand how people get entrenched in an anti-mask, open-it-all-up mindset. You just want to be on the opposite side of this kind of entitled grandstanding.
Has anyone explained to these students that if they don't feel safe with the preparations for the virus they really don't have to attend? Nobody is forcing them. In fact, they can get a head start working at McDonald's without even getting that sociology degree.
USM started classes last Monday, all online for the first three weeks. Some students living on campus have tested positive and have been moved to a residence hall designated for quarantine.
Classes are set up to remain online, or return to online, should a campus outbreak result in the need to change course delivery.
“maybe we can learn something from these youngsters”. Yes, like what an abysmal failure our educational system has been for the past couple of generations. We have no one to blame but ourselves - we let it happen.
As long as we're talking about young people, here are a few quotes, which comfort me that (maybe) the kids are alright:
“[Young people] are high-minded because they have not yet been humbled by life, nor have they experienced the force of circumstances . . . They think they know everything, and are always quite sure about it.”
-Rhetoric, Aristotle
4th Century BC
“A pernicious excitement to learn and play chess has spread all over the country, and numerous clubs for practicing this game have been formed in cities and villages . . . chess is a mere amusement of a very inferior character, which robs the mind of valuable time that might be devoted to nobler acquirements . . . they require out-door exercises–not this sort of mental gladiatorship.”
-Scientific American
July, 1858
“We defy anyone who goes about with his eyes open to deny that there is, as never before, an attitude on the part of young folk which is best described as grossly thoughtless, rude, and utterly selfish.”
-The Conduct of Young People, Hull Daily Mail
1925
“Many [young people] were so pampered nowadays that they had forgotten that there was such a thing as walking, and they made automatically for the buses . . . unless they did something, the future for walking was very poor indeed.”
-Scottish Rights of Way: More Young People Should Use Them, Falkirk Herald
1951
“The traditional yearning for a benevolent employer who can provide a job for life also seems to be on the wane . . . In particular, they want to avoid ‘low-level jobs that aren’t keeping them intellectually challenged.’”
-Meet Generation X, Financial Times
1995
And, the coup de grace:
“Parents themselves were often the cause of many difficulties. They frequently failed in their obvious duty to teach self-control and discipline to their own children.”
-Problems of Young People, Leeds Mercury
1938
Good Lord, children.
Stay home. Or shut up.
Cram another tampon in. It’s not like somebody left a banana peel on an oak tree.
@8:15pm Anyone with any experience and brains knows that it always takes an asshole to actually get things done, where no one else could. Being a leader is never about being popular.
7:36, college has ALWAYS leaned liberal. The polls swing toward conservatism soon after graduation once people start paying taxes.
Stop the whining Mr. Writer. Sit out a semester. Nobody is requiring you to attend this fall. Let the rest of the world keep moving. You don't have to.
You could learn to listen to the science. Thats what they are trying to convey.
https://coronavirus.olemiss.edu/confirmed-cases-reported-to-um/
Check out the cases in last few days.
only three colleges in our state might make it the whole semester in person.
Mississippi College
William Carey
Blue Mountain
1-not party schools
2-most students and faculty aren’t extreme left wingers and the ones that are don’t (can’t) push an agenda
3-will follow rules on masks/distance
Soon we will probably just start issuing college degrees for "life experiences", with no classroom and no testing requirements, 4 years after high school, and college degrees will mean nothing at all.
Teachers will still be paid, of course (like football coaches, trainers, grounds keepers, announcers, and all the other employees who will be doing nothing this fall).
And folks cannot figure out why China is taking the lead in the world . . .
Anybody see the devastation going on at the Alabama football institutions? Mississippi schools will catch up in a couple weeks - we are always a little slower than the average.
I’m surprised that so many commenters here didn’t know that colleges have student newspapers.
@6:50 AM - You are definitely on to something. When my sister would misbehave, my mother would tell her to pack her suitcase because she was being sent to Blue Mountain Female College - "50 miles away from any sin". That always got my sister's attention.
They really need to update their understanding of the virus. Almost no one is put on a ventilator now. Also, there is no shortage of ICU beds at this point. A few of the major hospitals may be a little tight but plenty beds in the local units. I guess it would have taken these esteemed "journalist" 10 minutes to do a quick google search to find out the basics but I guess it's more fun to conjure the worst case scenario and scream fire. Unfortunately these same students will be working in the newsrooms all around the country with the same mindset.
You just can't make personal responsibility a cornerstone of pandemic policies. People have proven time and time again they will not do anything to help society when it results in even a minor inconvenience to themselves.
It is not the fact that classes are in-person that is the issue here, it is that the kids have places to gather together after class without any mitigation at all. They are packing bars, nighclubs, frat houses, etc. and spreading the disease rapidly.
Since the kids are not going to follow guidelines voluntarily, I agree with making classes online for at least the first semester.
7:36, college students generally do not turn out to vote. And when they get out and actually start paying taxes, their eyes are usually opened to the BS being pushed by the left.
Berkeley South-
Just cancel everything (school, sports, restaurants, etc. until Spring 2021. Let it crash and we will start over and I'm sure Say it ain't so Joe and the Dems will take care of us. Have all the confidence in my Government with it's expertise along with the selected experts, plus of course our distinguished panel of MS experts (on this blog site) leading the way. We can end up in a better place.
Maybe the author should put up a fence between "itself"(non binary pronouns for the Ole Miss liberal culture) and the rest of the student body and the town of Oxford like the school is putting up for the football team so they can't see the relocated statue. If you can't see it then it's not there, right?
I wager that none of you geniuses served as editor of a college newspaper. All you can do in response to a well written editorial on a serious topic is criticize “libs” and young people. Pathetic.
The virus 🦠 responded to this article that it is enthusiastic about any school arrangements, at any level, that place one human host within proximity of another human host. The virus said that’s what matters; all that matters. Further, if human goals propel such results, it has no involvement in, and is indifferent to, such deliberations, at least if they have the result of placing human hosts within proximity of other human hosts. The virus also wants to thank the Governor for his understanding, and looks forward to joining him for football 🏈.
8:44...the apartments in Oxford and Starkville are at 100% occupancy. Parents want these kids OUT of the house. Whether there is class or not, the virus is coming to these towns. They could completely close the campus but the spikes are inevitable.
So out of all these schoolkids and college students getting the virus, how many are actually going to the hospital? How many are winding up in ICU?
@10:18 - exactly. How many lives are we willing to sacrifice to the economy. If 100 kids die, is that acceptable? How about 100 grandparents, or a thousand? How many people are you ok sacrificing to the Republicans?
The University of Alabama just reported 531 new cases since opening late last week. It is what it is? Not to the ones who will die.
"The economy"? You speak of the economy as if its a thing. You know what it is? A collection of lives.
Are you prepared for the increased suicides, depression, drug problems? The bankruptcies, evictions, and joblessness if "the economy" is shut down for too long?
Someone saves up, opens a business, maybe took out loans to start that business. Suddenly he or she is forced to shut down and has not revenue for months and months and months. The lenders and credit card companies come calling. You have to close for good. Your credit is ruined. Your life is effectively over, especially if you are in your 50's and 60's. There is no getting back off the mat. You lost everything. THat business was someone's life. It was also the life for the employees and their families they support.
Guess what? There is no guarantee for a vaccine. Period. We MIGHT have one that works but when that does happen, then we have to get it out to mass production and distribution. Read that interview with the Merck CEO. He said it will be several years before worldwide production of one takes place.
We've had it nice and soft for several generations. Now we got hit with a real crisis and we don't know what to do or how to handle it psychologically.
to live with virus going on around you..
1-when feeling sick, don’t leave your home
2-don’t congregate inside with crowds over 50
3-don’t hang out in low ventilated areas.
4-try to maintain more distance between you and someone else
5-avoid bars and eating in restaurants. (aerosols from people’s breathing in and out are what’s causing this. not droplets. read up..)
even if followed you might get it. but we have to avoid the surge at hospitals with covid patients. they have learned ventilators aren’t the best treatment at all. treatments are better. science is winning
Kudos to KF and his 10:57 comment. He nailed it with a jackhammer.
Here's the thing KF. We need a plan that is clearly communicated and enforced. Shutting down the entire economy should only be a last resort in the case where the epidemic is spreading out of control, and then only for long enough to stop the community spread.
What we do have to do is identify those activities that contribute to uncontrolled spread and selectively shut them down. Bars, nightclubs, house parties, fraternities, etc. should be the first to go. Enforce size restrictions on churches, weddings, funerals, and other gatherings. If the disease is spread by respiratory means then mandate masks in public. Then evaluate the results and adjust accordingly.
Unfortunately America won't even do that. We have one of the worst infection rates in the world and one of the highest mortality rates per capita. We have to make plans taking into account there is a decent percentage of Americans who will refuse to do anything to help. Vaccine development and distribution become the first line of defense in that case. Do a quick test for safety and then start rolling them out as quickly as possible. Sure people may be harmed, but as long as it is less than expected by the uncontrolled spread of the disease then that is a risk we will have to take. We don't have the luxury of time like most of the rest of civilized societies do.
Wall Street Journal has a great article today along those lines.
Kingfish, you forgot to answer the question. How many are you willing to sacrifice? There has to be a number where you say enough is enough. What if the number is only 1 but that one is your mother. You still ok with making sacrifices?
Even if we get a safe and effective vaccine, we'll still have a major vaccination problem:
https://news.gallup.com/poll/317018/one-three-americans-not-covid-vaccine.aspx
The vaccination problem is expected to be a combination of lack of trust in science, government, and business, plus a lack of social solidarity and altruism (i.e., our current political lanscape):
https://khn.org/news/trust-fear-and-solidarity-will-determine-the-success-of-a-covid-vaccine/
Quit being stupid. Under your logic, we shut down EVERYTHING just for one death. You are making a bogus argument.
Someone is always going to die and there are always going to be anecdotes or personal relationships. You can't shut down a whole society over one. That is why you look at the stats as a whole and not just anecdotes.
If there is no vaccine, all we are doing is suppressing the virus transmission while we shut down. Then the second the shut down is over, it surges again. Rinse, repeat.
Not exactly KF. If you have adequate testing and quarantine, you can stop it and avoid needless deaths.
Been there, done that. You also , require vaccines like we did for small pox and polio. And, back then, we had to trace and quarantine person by person without tests. Each summer for years, there was a polio outbreak stopped before it spread to many with quarantine alone.
But, back then, people were willing to help their communities by inconveniencing themselves for the required periods...first with word of a case until the health dept. caught up.
It should have been easier now than in the 40's and 50's.
And,a reminder...New Zealand
12:08----How many lives are you willing to sacrifice in order to drive a car.-Huh, how many, You must have a number.
How many lives are you willing to sacrifice in order to eat all the fast food you want. Huh, how many, you must have a number.
How many lives are you willing to risk in order to keep alcohol legal. Huh, You must have a number.
How many children are you willing to sacrifice in order for them to ride bicycles. Huh, you must have a number
You see, this list could go on and on. Life is full of risks and rewards and to single one thing out in order to make a woke statement is both unfair and ignorant.
I have read several posts here that would seem to support the return go a peace time draft. All that's needed is to cut the base pay in half and hold all but a pocket change allowance until the end of the initial enlistment. But of course the College Board would never stand for that.
Lol at all the “these kids are wimps” on this board. The major flaws of this country fall right at the feet of baby boomers, who let inequality skyrocket, who let health care continue to be a for-profit endeavor that excludes and bankrupts millions, who washed their hands on racism after the 60s and considered the job done, who traded in their ambitions for a mortgage and a Benz in the suburbs, who gave rise to the right-wing disinformation machine that is ruining our politics... y’all are ridiculous. Kids are always going to be a bit naive, but the failures of prior generations have no similar excuse. And if you think some orange narcissist is the solution to what ails us, you’re an absolute reckless fool, and the country would be better off if you migrated elsewhere. Have you noticed that Joe’s 10 point lead, or so, has held steady for weeks now? The end is nigh idiots; the end is nigh.
3:05, The Boomer generation helped pave the way for civil rights, voting rights, and women's rights. They also helped to end a war that was fought for political reasons, and with it the military draft, to which you are not subjected. They gave us a lot of great music and popularized the pot you're probably smoking, which used to carry a prison term of many years for simple possession.
If you want to buck the young-person stereotype and read something not on social media about generational prejudices, here's a starting place:
https://www.theatlantic.com/national/archive/2013/05/why-the-boomers-are-the-most-hated-generation/276368/
Newsflash to 3:50: The Boomer generation is not your parents (let's keep the blame where it belongs).
Imagine being a 20 year old male on campus with thousands of 125# blue eyed, blonde, sorority girls. Now imagine proper social distancing. Cancelling class ain't gonna help!
Just do everything virtual, even the football games.
Then that way the butt hurt sissified player won't have to risk seeing that bad ole statue!!!!!
just heard this morning that 3rd and 10th floors of Martin dorm at Ole Miss got shut down- kids who had JUST moved into those two floors have been sent home for 2 weeks.
Classes havent even started/barely started.
Yep. Expect more. It's a coming.
