Identity theft is real as one poor schmuck discovered to his horror here in Jackson.
JPD arrested David Micah Smith and charged him with business burglary earlier this year after he broke into a gas station and adjacent restaurant. However, Smith told the police his name was Anthony Scratch (The victim's last name has been changed.). Smith stayed at the Studio 6 Hotel on I-55 frontage road with his wife.
Apparently Smith was not just using an alias but had stolen Scratch's identity. In short, Smith made his life a living hell. Arrest warrants had been issued in Scratch's name when the real suspect was Smith while bill collectors hounded Scratch thanks to Smith's shenanigans.
JPD subsequently charged Smith with identity theft. Smith is apparently an addict. Jackson Municipal Court Judge Jeff Reynolds ordered him to Gateway under the conditions he stay sober, obey the rules, and stay at the facility until Gateway said it was time for him to leave. Gateway's rehabilitation program usually lasts approximately six months.
Some people just can't handle a good break when they get one and Smith is one of those people. He escaped from Gateway and is now on the lam. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Is that the best photo the police could produce? Seems a little difficult to ID a feller based on the equivalent of a drawing!
ID theft is real and a real pain. Having been a victim a few times I recommend everyone use Multi-factor authentication as a tool to prevent this crime. MFA is simply where you get a call or text or enter a PIN to authorize use of a card or credit. I have it every time I log into my bank account or other financial accounts. This minor inconvenience is an once of prevention worth it every time I don’t need another pound of cure.
I was hoping the blessing of criminals in Hinds County was coming to an end with the retirement of Tomie Green. Apparently not.
