The city of Jackson issued the following statement.
Due to
excessively high temperatures, Richard’s Disposal is asking residents to
leave their trash at the curb in case it is not picked up on
regularly-scheduled routes. In these cases,
it will be collected the following day.
The record
temperatures are a threat to the health and safety of the trash pickup
runners. They continue to work hard, but are doing so under dangerous
conditions. The entire state
is currently under an extreme heat advisory, according to the
Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.
Richard’s
thanks residents for their patience and understanding and will continue
to work hard and smart on the behalf of customers.
Kingfish note: Yet again, Waste Management is picking up the garbage in Hinds County and the surrounding area this week without missing a lick.

How about starting your routes at 7am?
The weather seems to be just a convenient excuse for their incompetence, uh?
Are they gonna stop picking up the garbage when it gets cold too. What a poorly run company.
Waste Mgmt they are not.
Not a bit damn hotter than it was 50 years ago. Too hot to work but not to hot to raise hell and party.
They don’t have this problem in China.
I doubt all of the crews show up during summer.
Really, I didn't notice the heat? Will try that with my customers next time!
Hopefully they don't cancel foosball season this year due to the heat
I have lived in central Mississippi for 70+ years.
I’m not the smartest man in Mississippi, but I have noticed that EVERY year around mid-July to the end of August, it is hot as hell.
Not just hot, hot as hell.
My garbage gets picked up, my yard gets mowed, my fallen limbs get picked up, my garden gets hoed, my hail damaged roof gets repaired. Amazingly, things still get done.
How often do you hear the highway department say it's too damned hot to lay asphalt and drive tractors? NEVER
How often do you hear Waste Management say it's too damned hot to work? NEVER
How often do you hear 82 county road crews claim it's too damned hot to work? NEVER
How often do boys all across the state say it's too damned hot to start fall football in August? NEVER
How often do thousands of independent yard crews in this state claim they won't be coming, as scheduled, because it's too damned hot? NEVER
[Incompetence cannot be managed - It can only be jettisoned.]
It's breaking daylight at 5:35 a.m. Roll the trucks.
@4:30 PM
I’m not old enough to remember 50 years ago.
I am old enough to remember the tar bubbling up on the chip sealed road I grew up on in the 1990s.
I remember we used to run over the hot tar bubbles with our bikes and also poke them with sticks.
You don’t see too many hot tar bubbles on the road these days.
All we wanted to do was sit inside and play Sega in the AC.
Nope, we got put outside!
Richard's needs to go talk to the roofers, road construction workers, landscapers, and countless other people who work in outdoor professions and see how much sympathy they get.
Where’s the IT guy?
You’d think so try all the money from these temporary contracts, they’d have enough money to rotate workers. Have them do half days shifts. Duh
Richard’s will not pick up sticks and yard debris I neatly stacked for them on the curb. I had to put them in a garbage cans over three or four pickup cycles. Waste Management picked up yard trash if it was left neatly on the curb.
Endless excuses.
Good thing us farmers still work in the heat so fatty in the city can eat her processed foods.
And the state prisoners are now lying around in air conditioned cells, thanks to Burl.
Lumumba creating issues and making Jackson worse day by day!
And, as a tax paying citizen I have elected and so have my employees to begin work at 5:00 am. You adjust but when your constituents get up at 10 am during the weekdays since they have been clubbing then I suppose you adjust your work hours to make them happy. It’s tough being people of leisure while us working class have to sweat but hey, that’s life
Update from Madison:
1) Trash got picked up this morning (Waste Management)
2) Recycling got picked up 1/2 hour later (Waste Management)
3) Yard guy came for bi-monthly maintenance
4) Lawn got cut yesterday, as scheduled
Nobody died as far as I know.
Do they still get paid for the days of hotness?
Welcome to the Democratic Party
Madison County resident here. WM picked up my trash yesterday on time as always.
Jackson ya'll voted for this mess so enjoy it.
As far as I can tell, virtually every trash collector with the new collection company has a clean record! It appears to pay good wages with benefits. Maybe City Hall can have a reception introducing them to our Jackson taxpayers, and the maybe celebrating at chars.for free drinks and hors dousers
The mayor spends more time making apologies for Richard's than he does finding a legitimate garbage collection contractor.
Well if it’s that hot then computers can’t work to print checks, even for direct deposits & there is usually a clause for employers to automatically withdraw funds right back out of checking accounts when direct deposit started years ago. I have seen this done. Just FYI City of Jackson. When Ted takes this over I believe issues like this will stop!
“Richard’s Disposal” even sounds amateurish. Like your buddy Rich who just got fired decided to start a side hustle with his severance package.
Meanwhile Waste Management is so authoritative it sounds like a branch of the government.
@6:32
Have you got something against companies hiring ex-cons? People on probation who are trying to re-enter the taxpaying world?
I would like to thank the Jackson City Council members for continuing to ask the mayor to bring forward bids for the garbage contract now, rather than waiting until the 11th hour to create a crisis of non-collection.
Please keep it up, whether it works or not. Ask him directly in every.single.council.meeting between now and the expiration of Richards LATEST manufactured emergency contract. Get it on the record.
Richard was not paying attention when his mom said it's better to not open your mouth and let people think you are an idiot than to issue a press release and confirm it for everybody.
In order to effect equity in the awarding of contracts some sacrifices must be made. Those sacrifices will be made by the ever shrinking but happy citizenry of Jackson MS. who can take pride in knowing that they are participating in a redistribution of wealth. Be of good cheer comrades.
Lumumba… you damn moron. I swear you aren’t aware in Madison and rankinnthere garbage is being picked up as scheduled!!! It’s the same temperature there. You’re a sh!t show
Truly this just reinforces the saying that “truth is stranger than fiction”.
Shitty leadership = Shitty Trash Pickup, Shitty Water Service, Shitty with Soul, π️π️OH MY Jesus π️π️
Shitty in the street, Shitty in the creek, He think Shitty be neat. HELP US JESUS π️π️
Well at least the Council can use this in their defense in the litigation that Richard's brought forward. I hear a great big "I told you so..." How can a judge rule in the company's favor when they cannot perform the work?
The one service that was working in Jackson and the mayor managed to screw it up.
Equity & social justice in action. Coming in to work is racist. Time clocks are racist. Punctuality is racist. Schedules are racist Hard work is racist. Hard work in not weather is racist. Expecting employees to do their jobs is racist.
"...got fired decided to start a side hustle with his severance package."
@7:32 - You know of anybody who got fired and got a severance package?
You deserve what you will tolerate.
A third world city mayor yields third world city problems. Right?
This is why it's called summer.
Thanks, Tori!
@9:25pm, our water and sewer are also working and our crime is under control, just saying…it’s called accountability in your elected leaders.
Y'all bash on Canton a lot and its leadership is lacking in lots of ways but our garbage is picked up on schedule, yard debris is picked up every week and our water is good.
Just yesterday CMU was repairing a major water leak on North street between the circuit courthouse and county admin buildings. The guy in the hole was diggin it too! He was up to his chest good cool muddy water and the crew got it done.
I work my garden, maintain everything outside and beat my grass in the mornings while there is some semblance of cool.
Im I’m Baton Rouge all summer. Garbage truck comes around 5:00am and uses one of those mechanical arms. Workers only get out of trucks for big jobs. Otherwise they sit in the AC. It’s called an innovation. And it’s why garbage pick up is cheaper here. .
Blame the Mayor.
The purpose of the 96 gallon cart in most cities is for the truck to pick it up through automation. Not our Mayor, he wants to force the cart down our throats while rejecting automation, favoring having two hoppers on every truck. Well, guess what? RD is apparently having problems getting employees.
In Greenwood, we have the 96 gallon cans with the automation. Works great and it’s hotter here than there.
Does the temperature change that much from day to day? One day it is too hot to pick up garbage but they will pick it up the next day. Is a cold front going to come in and cool the weather off enough to collect garbage? Why don't the people of Jackson admit they are satisfied to live in a city that is filled with garbage left to rot on the curb just because it is summer.
This excuse is straightup Antar bullshit. I just passed street crews at work, two police officers on bikes (the kind you pedal with your legs, and all sorts of men doing yard jobs. Exactly why is Antar so invested in Richards Disposal????
10 fawty 2 comment hit it on the head! Daaaayyyyuuummm. Kingfish, your earlier comment is correct. They are having trouble finding help. We have more people in the country now than before and we business owners can’t find help. So, can anyone tell me where this is going to end?
The weather is racist! It’s just that simple….
I work at UPS. I’m gonna use that excuse tomorrow. No packages, it’s too hot!
Free the garbage. Right?
There's a long street where I take walks in Gulf Shores, AL. It's always lined with heavy blue monster 96 gallon trash bins on wheels that stink even when empty. People don't drag them back to their ground level carport area, (because heavy and smelly) but bring out rancid kitchen trash in loosely tied bags all through the week to toss in these street-side bins for eventual weekly mechanized pickup. The whole street stinks of nasty rotting trash, even after the pickup, this is not progress!
11:29, no pun intended, but that must be a really trashy part of Gulf Shores. In most towns, the ordinance says the cans must be pulled in and not left on the street. That's no different than if you had a little Walmart can.
11:29/2:26 I'd bet many or most of those are rentals with different guests every week... kinda hard to police.
