Dowdy Fights Indictment

Is the son of a former MBN Director a drug dealer?

Ridgeland police arrested John Dowdy, III on February 25, 2021 for drug trafficking and other drug-related offenses.  Dowdy is the son of former MBN Director John Dowdy.

A Madison County grand jury indicted Dowdy in September 2022 for aggravated trafficking in controlled substances, possession of meth with intent to distribute, conspiracy to distribute meth, possession of alprazolam with intent to distribute, conspiracy to distribute alprazolam, and possession of tetrahydrocannabol.  The indictment alleges Dowdy was caught with 200 grams of meth, between 40 and 2,500 dosage units of alprazolam. and between 10 and 30 grams of tetrahydrocannabol.  Dowdy is the son of former MBN Director John Dowdy.

The grand jury indicted Caleb Cartwright and Bardin Boyd with Dowdy on the third count, conspiracy to distribute meth (MDMA).  Cartwright pleaded guilty.  Circuit Judge Brad Mills sentenced him to serve 10 years in prison but suspended the sentence and placed him on supervised probation for five years.  Bardin filed a petition to plead guilty to the charge Tuesday.

Attorney John Collette represents Dowdy.  The attorney filed a motion for a continuance on March 31.  The motion argues

Undersigned has been advised that a codefendant, the defendant’s uncle, provided a recorded statement to law enforcement agents (FBI and/or MBN or task force) on 2/28/23 to 3/1/23 that contains Brady material and needs to be reviewed prior to a final resolution herein.

3. The State has informed Undersigned that they were unaware of any such statement or recording, therefore a subpoena may be needed to pursue same.

Assistant District Attorney Todd McAlplin responded yesterday.  The response states:

1. That the discovery was provided to the Defendant in this matter on October 30, 2022.

2. That in response to the Defendant’s request on March 11, 2023, the State inquired with the DEA about the existence of a recorded statement by Bardin Boyd and was again advised that no recorded statement existed.

3. After the inquiry, an agent emailed the State several reports most of which are included in other reports provided in discovery on October 30, 2022.

4. Two of the reports detail an interview and information provided by Bardin Boyd, Dowdy’s co-defendant, after his arrest.

5. The State has reviewed the reports and finds no exculpatory information, however, out of an abundance of caution, the state is providing these reports to the defense, as well as to the Court, for review but not as an attachment to this motion.

6. The State does not intend to use any of the information contained in these reports that was not previously provided in discovery in its case in chief.

7. This matter involves a suspicious vehicle that was parked in a parking lot, where a law enforcement officer gets probable cause to search the vehicle and finds a large amount of controlled substances in the car and the information provided today is irrelevant to this case.

8. That this is a possession of controlled substances case, and the State is not conducting a federal investigation in this matter."

The case is assigned to Judge Mills.

Dowdy's father resigned his position under a cloud of scandal when State Auditor Shad White forced him to repay  $30,122 after Dowdy was caught misusing compensatory time buybacks.  The former U.S. Attorney tried to claim he was a law enforcement officer even though he never graduated from a training academy.   Shad White was having none of it and ruled he was not a law enforcement officer.  Mr. Dowdy repaid the money.  Earlier post.

The Madison County case is not young Dowdy's first brush with drug charges.  JJ reported on October 23, 2019:

Byram police arrested the son of Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics Director John Dowdy, Jr. in August for allegedly trying to obtain narcotics through a phony prescription in August.  The police report is posted below.

The report states an unnamed individual dropped off a fraudulent prescription at the Byram Walmart Pharmacy on August 3. Dowdy, III allegedly attempted to pick up the prescription the next day but was arrested his troubles.  Dowdy was released on a $40,000 bond.

The case has not yet been sent to the grand jury.  The Byram police are going to wait until the new District Attorney assumes office before submitting the case for prosecution.  There are two prosecutions in this case.  One of the prosecutions is handed off to MBN for further investigation.  Earlier post with copy of police report.

Dowdy was not indicted on the charges.   The District Attorney's office said it had not received the case for prosecution.  It appears the young man did not learn from his experience but instead tried his luck again.

John is a good man and I'm sorry his son got mixed up with drugs. It can happen to any parent.

April 13, 2023 at 1:16 PM, it's good to know you have sympathy for your fellow man.

Collette seems quiet used to filing motions for continuance in his cases. Sounds like the attorneys for the other 2 defendants had plenty of time to gather, learn, and know all they needed to know and to reach a plea agreement, but yet Collette needs more time ?

yes, it can happen to any parent, drug use; but this is another level "drug DEALER"!!! Byram charge when away because of Daddy

1:24 pm I sincerely hope none of those who comment of this suddenly find their little Braxton has been arrested with a suitcase full of illegal drugs in their trunk. There is not a highschool in the Greater Hinds/Madison/Rankin/Warren/Yazoo/etc. county area where there isn't at least one student pusher, willing to drag their family down with them for the lifestyle they chose to enter into.

Prayers for the family as they kiss their son good by when he enters the prison system. I bet he thought they would get him off when he got caught and not wonders why it isn't going to happen. Daddy can't get you off this one John III.

I'm sure KF will not post this but here we go. One of the funniest things about this is how the Grandparents of Dowdy and the parents of Bardin have spent their whole lives telling everyone else what they and their children have done wrong. These are also the nephew and brother of the infamous Dr. PITA over at the Pink House. I grew up with these folks and I laugh and laugh.

If my kids starting using dope and / or pushing dope, I would not ask for a lighter sentence than they deserve. If they get away with that, they might try to kill me next. Yall really ought to watch some of these crime shows on Netflix. Crazy damn people out there could be one of you or your own.

"John is a good man and I'm sorry his son got mixed up with drugs. It can happen to any parent."

Does 'any parent' claim to be a law enforcement officer and resign when that claim is discovered to be bull shit?

Mr. Dowdy's interjecting himself into this situation is simply another example of, "Do you know WHO I AM?"

3:30 has posted the most intelligent comment on this thread. This can/could happen to anybody, and if Daddy got him off the first time, shame on him.

Just to clarify what @4:57 said. Dowdy is Bardins nephew. Bardin is Dr PITA’s youngest brother.

1:41: Yeah, because we should have sympathy for people that poison our communities and destroy lives.

Fuck that guy.

I worked with John Dowdy. I hope John and his family find peace and this young man gets his life back together. Drugs are bad. Addiction is real.

Why did Caleb Cartwright get off so easy? Because he went to JA and Ole Miss? Did Dad have to pay up for this?

April 13, 2023 at 7:16 PM, ain't you something. You act as if this man doesn't have people that care about them? People that may have made a positive influence on the community?

People that are morally, and legally upright citizens. They don't count? Do you think the drug addict, or dealer, exist in a vacuum, with no other human connections? People that are concerned not only about the individual, but the harm their loved one is doing to others.

In my opinion, people with your attitude are morally bankrupt individuals, without the courage it takes to care. Notice I used the word courage.

8:52- Sorry but your drivel is quite confusing.

We are supposed to support and feel empathy for a scumbag that sells drugs? OK. Gotcha.

The US need to take the same stance on drugs dealers as Singapore.

The boy will serve his sentence once it's handed down. The dad won't serve the sentence (in jail), neither did he cause or share responsibility for the decisions of the boy or the outcome of those decisions.

The mother and dad and other family members have my sympathy as they too will never get beyond this. Do they deserve it? No.

April 14, 2023 at 10:23 AM, feigning confusion of a post to hide one's arrogance, and cowardice is nothing new. Your unwillingness to show mercy is noted. Be careful what you sow, for you also will reap that which you sow. Good day.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
