Credell Wipes Out Creek Repair as Yards Wash Out

Carolwood residents must continue to see flooding washout their yards after the Clan of Calhoun revoked funding for the repair of White Oak Creek last week.

Hinds County Supervisors Robert Graham and David L. Archie slammed Supervisor Credell Calhoun, Vern Gavin, and Bobcat McGowan at a press conference on Carolwood Drive Thursday.  Mr. Graham said the Supervisors voted earlier to spend $2 million in ARPA funds to fix White Oak Creek.  The creek floods on a regular basis and has already eroded more than ten feet from resident's yards.

However, the Calhoun Clan rescinded the appropriation on July 5.  Mr. Graham accused the Clan of using the funds to "repair a vacant building."  "This is sad, and it's a shame," said the District 1 Supervisor.

Jackson City Council President Ashby Foote chimed in with the two Supervisors in criticizing the revocation.  He said the flooding has worsened and the residents desperately need relief.  He thanked State Representative Shonda Yates for placing $2 million in the state bond bill to fix the creek.  Mr. Foote said it will take $4 million to fix White Oak Creek.

Flooding victim Jojo Adams (No relation to Jojo Starbuck) said flooding was washed twelve feet away from his yard.  (6:00).  "We need help and we need it now.  I know the county has the money.  We really need your help" said Mr. Adams as he begged them to reconsider.

"The residents of Northeast Jackson need our help," said Mr. Archie. He blasted his colleagues, calling Supervisors Gavin and McGowan  "two dummies that doesn't  understand much of anything" before he said a little inconvenient fact often ignored in the downtown halls of government, "The people that live in Northeast Jackson have to pay the highest taxes in the state of Mississippi.  We need the citizens of Northeast Jackson and North Jackson to continue to live here and continue to be here."

Mr. Archie wasn't through: "When we made the commitment to the state that we would give the $2 million of American Rescue money to this project, and when we left the table and the deal was done, there was a handshake.  Credell Calhoun appears to have backed out of the handshake."

Representative Yates said the decision was very unfortunate. She said there are areas that need immediate attention.

There are residents on Kristen Drive who are also losing their back yards due to Purple Creek erosion, 3-6 feet, where the creek runs between Kristen Drive and Ferncreek Drive.

They made a fatal error in showing that one of the affected residents is Caucasian.

Attention all folks in Hinds County!! This message applies to both unincorporated areas and incorporated areas. This message applies to all voters, residents, and elected officials. Please listen closely.

Focus ONLY on water, sewer, drainage, streets, garbage pickup, crime, and schools. Nothing else matters. Nothing else will ever matter until those things at least reach an acceptable minimum standard.

That money is needed for multiple fact-finding trips to Paris, right? Those Parisian hookers are expensive.

I know this is a desperate solution, but can property owners form a civic organization among themselves to purchase at discount and place rip-rap stones, a wheel barrel at a time, along the creek bank in dry weather, securing it in place with bags of sand and cement? Maybe a retired civil engineer can provide guidance for a reduced fee. Negotiate with County for a sales tax rebate?

To the residents of NE Jackson-

Get out NOW while you can!

Kenny Wayne Jones stopped the vote because he controls Calhoun, Gavin and Bobcat. He didn't see were he could get a kickback to support his habit. Remember Jones is the one went to Auditor on People in the county after he didn't get his.

Sounds like the residents are being discriminated against based on their race. Perhaps a lawsuit is in order

So much private property. So little legal authority to spend public funds there. Perhaps some decisions are less political than legal.

Plenty of black folk along White Oak Creek. Not a race issue

JoJo Adams is not one to be messed with. He is going to open up a can of Sardis whoop ass on someone.

We are down to Kenny Stokes, David Archie and Robert Graham being the voice of reason in these parts. Shocking how quickly this board has deteriorated to this point. Bobcat seemed sensible last term. If Archie could flip Bobcat, whoa Nellie, imagine the fun.

I intended to say County to rebate property (not sales) taxes for affected owners along creek.

These rich old money whites can easily come up with that money.

Drainage is a proper government function, even from a Libertarian point of view.

so, ya'll don't see david archie in these pictures supporting this funding? don't let the loudest person in the room fool you... they not always the brightest.

Krusatyr, Your plan, which is fraught with plenty of obstacles, omits the one major part of what would be required - and that is a comprehensive repair of the drainage structure. Doing it piecemeal with some property owners doing it on their part of the drainage structure without all being done would be a waste of time, resources and 'rip rap'.

Much more is required than just shoring up the banks that are eroding which is the result of the problem and not the problem itself.

It appears there is an epidemic of this type of behavior. The lack of integrity runs rampant from the smallest political office, extending to the highest political office in the land.

It is believed by many nations, some that were once close allies of America, that Washington is no longer agreement capable. It appears that is also the case with Hines county, Mississippi.

Personally, I could not stand by and watch my yard wash down stream to the Pearl. Of course there is a multi million dollar underlying problem, hence the group, if willing to act together, might find a retired CE to help orient temporary protection.

I have single handedly landscaped to prevent erosion, with stones, backfill and small trees. Forty five years later, my two weeks of wheel barrow terracing protected my former home from a hundred year flood.

NE Jxn is embarrassing itself being hostage and/or ever beholding to these low-intellect warm bodies. Surely they must be ashamed.

Y'all complain about not enough water, and now you complain about too much water. Before long you will want passable streets and no car-jackings. Lol.

Back off with all the negative vibes, man. That's some clean water by Jackson standards.

Who ever runs against Credell Calhoun please come see me, we have a donation for you at our law firm.
Sources close to Calhoun says, he wants his nephew John D. Calhoun to get the contract, that's why he voted against it.
Verne Gavin wants to give Hope Credit Union 5 million to get 50K for his campaign.
Bobcat wants money to take his wife to the boat, since they not getting Ivan Johnson check any more. Bobcat is Bigger embrassment then Stokes & Archie together.

Growing up in Northeast Jackson in the late 60's to mid 70's, White Oak Creek between the dead end of Briarfield Drive and Old Canton was our own summer camp. We lived to find something to do in that creek. Fishing, whacking water moccasins, border war with the Leber boys on the other side of the creek, we were there just about every day. My dear late friend Richie E. found a massive prehistoric shark tooth and a cannon ball in that creek. Had some deep holes and some really nice gravel bars.

But that was a time before everything got built up upstream. What was once woods and pastures is now parking lots and buildings. Recent attempts to mitigate downstream flooding by using retention ponds in developments probably hasn't worked as well as planned. The old creek would "get up" but not very often.

It’s like a minstrel show about government corruption.

"Drainage is a proper government function". Couldn't have said that better myself. The job of Government is to drain the voters.

It's hard to believe Credell is still around. And, harder still that anyone would take his "word" ,much less a handshake, seriously.
That said, after the flood of 1979, it was quite clear that White Oak creek and others needed maintenance that had been ignored for decades.
It was also clear that the city had been negligent for decades in building/development codes and had allowed such to take place in ways that were " pennywise" but "pound foolish". Jackson developers and builders profited mightily from sub-par work and got away with highway robbery on their leases which made it harder for new businesses to get established. Not only do they have to " finish out" the interior, they have to fork over a percentage of sales/profits to the building owner. The lease payment just isn't enough though was, last I looked exorbitant.
And, of course, no building owner is required to maintain their building as we see with those abandoned.
Capitalism was never intended to be a license to steal. It has always required a " level playing field" established by government to enhance competition, not squelch it!

Absolute drivel. You are delusional. None of what you said is in the US Constitution or Bill of Rights. Nor is it in the Constitution of the Great State kf Mississippi.

The problem is ignorance and complacency. People in Mississippi are willfully ignorant. And as long as I obey the law, no government agency has the authority to stop me or my progeny, from exploiting the ignorant moronic dregs who inhabit this city and state.

If you don’t like it then turn the TV off and read a book. Educate yourselves. Become less exploitable.

Seems to me it would be cheaper to purchase the few homes that are subject to flooding and tearing them down rather than spend $4MM to repair the creek.

9:52 am You are right, economics isn't specifically addressed in The Constitution. We didn't even have a national monetary system when the Constitution was written.

There is a difference between an economic system and a system of government. Our Founders actually knew that.

Capitalism is defined over hundreds of years in economic books. The role of government such that it enhances and protects capitalism so that it works as intended has been described in economic books and papers for centuries now.

Our Founders were well educated , some self-educated because they read non-fiction books written by the best scholars of their age and past ages. They knew it was important to understand WHY and HOW systems work well or fail.

This insane new literal interpretation of The Constitution they wrote would stun them. There was great effort to make sure it was broad enough and general enough in language to allow for historical changes that would surely come.

I know this because I descend from a Founder. They wrote letters and kept diaries and their meetings were transcribed in summaries.

It's fine not to have gained knowledge. It's very dangerous to not acknowledge what you don't know and haven't bothered to learn.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
