Garbage in, Garbage Out?

Will a new company pick up Jackson's garbage? The Jackson City Council will vote on a new garbage contract in a special meeting today.  Jackson City Council President Virgi Lindsay did not call the meeting until Friday afternoon.  The agenda states:

FCC is a European company.  Several City Council members said they have not yet seen the contract.  The agenda nor the board packet are on the city website.   The contract will supposedly reduce garbage collection to once a week as other cities such as Baton Rouge and Mobile have done.  FCC would give a large garbage can to each customer.

Copy of RFP (Thanks be to you, reader)

Kingfish note: Special meeting on an odd day called at the last minute, contract not given to Council members prior to meeting...... hmmmmm........

The only thing missing are meaningless loyalty medals that the City Council can festoon upon their chests like North Korean generals.

There's money in garbage

So whose palms are getting greased...Besides the obvious?

I'm sure the group out of New Orleans is involved. Metro Group's ceo, Woods, was top donor to the mayor's first election in 2017. That firm does all the garbage collection in New Orleans and other surrounding areas. They probably partnered with the European firm as to keep their name out of it as they've had major labor issues and strikes in NO.

That business stinks but it's picking up.

Did they go out with an RFP for this?

Are competitive bids from qualified contractors for a clearly specified service too hoity toity and tighty whitey for this Mayor and Council?

I have received overall very good service from existing garbage collection in Northeast Jackson, twice per week. Once weekly garbage removal, which I have walked past in Alabama, literally stinks up the whole street in this climate.

New Orleans and Louisiana certainly are no models for decent governance.

My understanding is there was an RFP. It would be surprising if none was issued.

Internal sources were saying that the mayor held this till after this year's election so he could rake in up some donations.

KF, you ought review his donor list to see who from this firm gave and if so, how much. One would think there has to be a connection.

Agree....and for many years. I've got a really bad feeling about this change.

There is the matter of all those Actblue donations. $20,000 from a name not released.

Conceptually, we don't need twice weekly trash pickup. I'm on board with the concept of moving to once per week.

But why the secrecy? Why does everything have to be so clandestine? Even if they're not hiding anything, it sure makes them look bad.

@9:15 AM is the winner. HA!!

Service reductions. That is the Lumumba way. He is totally incompetent.

Don't know squat about this company, it's owners, or tge process.

But I do know that switching to once a week collection makes a lot of economic sense - most cities have already done this (many others than just the couple KF pointed to) and others are moving there as their existing contracts expire. Jackson tried to do this two years ago but WM wouldn't renegotiate their existing contract to make the change.

Council ought to take time to study the proposed contract - just because hizzoner put it off until the closing minutes doesn't mean you have to kiss his ring (or his ass) and eat whatever he feeds you.

Like the city council, I have no idea what is in this contract. However, I also think WM does a solid job. Going to one day per week will be a disaster. Would not be surprised if all trash is mandated to the one can the new company would provide. Unfortunately, most of Jackson’s population would not feel the changes in their routines because they throw their trash everywhere already. Sad truth.

Everyone needs to bombard Ashby Foote for what it is worth!

So this bid on May 11, and it just now being brought up with no prior knowledge to the board? Yes thinks stinks to high heavens. Is the existing contract expiring? Someone not happy? Lets hope the board steps up and asks questions and time to read contracts. If not, I wont be surprised.

Many cities are going this route...pass out giant roll off cans that the trucks can pick up mechanically and pick up only once per week. The real question is whether recyclables will continue to go in the landfill.

The cycle of palm greasing in Jackson is never ending. European company? (Friends of Bloomberg? Biden? Harris? DNC?).

This arrangement will likely require trips to Europe for coordination - first class airfare and 5-star hotels of course.

I am not opposed to 1 day per week pickup.
But I would be very hesitant to believe that all neighborhoods will actually abide by this.

I foresee some areas will still place garbage out (and just say screw it they can pick it up when they pick it up) and just let it pile for animals to destroy.

But then they likely already do that anyway, so carry on I guess.

2nd pick-up day in Jackson each week currently includes unlimited (properly staged) yard waste. Eliminate that feature and Jackson completes the transformation into a city-wide landfill.

Anonymous said...

You just better not MISS that one day or you'll have your trash for two weeks.

Anonymous said...

It looks like the request for proposals for solid waste was initiated 3/25/21 and ended 5/11/2021. Be interesting to have copies of the proposals received.

Will the waste disposal fee charged be reduced if pick-up is once a week? It might work if there were one day for trash and one day for recycling.

They gone be a lot of stankin' stuff around town especially during the summer. Think about those fried fish remnants after the big fish fry sitting in a garbage can in 95 degree heat for 7 days.

Is that the company Tony Soprano owned?

I don’t see the big deal. I have a pit on part of my property that I use to burn my rubbish. I toss in 1 old tire, 4-5 bags of trash, and then I pour a 5 quart bottle used motor oil on the pile. WALA! killed 3 birds with 1 flame!

Yep ... the famous Stokes' truism "smells like boo-boo", will be even more descriptive.

I sneered at the point made about one day being for recycling. Do you really believe 95% of these constituents will take the time to throw aluminum and paper in one box and other material in another? They can’t even roll the buggy two feet away from their car door, before they back out of the parking space.

This is not the type of work at all that should require an RFP. Should have done this on a low bid basis, but then they wouldn't be able to steer the contract towards whom they want

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
