The Jackson City Council voted to raise its pay and give the Mayor a $50,000 pay increase as well at its regular meeting Tuesday night.
Ward 1 Councilman Ashby Foote explained what happened on Facebook:
At the 17 June City Council meeting an item came before the Council to raise the pay of City elected officials effective 7/1/2029.The plan raises the Mayor’s salary to $170,000 and Council pay to $40,000 — a 60% increase for what’s meant to be a part-time job.I don’t think we’ve earned this raise — not when basic services are still falling short. The vote passed 5–1, but I stand by my NO vote.
Ward 3 Councilman Kenneth I. Stokes abstained from the vote.
The original resolution would raise the Council's salary to $35,000 but Ward 6 Councilman Aaron Banks amended the resolution to increase it to $40,000.
Failure is so amply rewarded in Jackson.

I told my boss that I had voted myself a pay increase and he told me to stop wasting his time and get my ass back to work.
Jackson most be growing at an astronomical rate to be able to permit such a huge additional expenditure. Just look at the last 40 years of population growth (not).
Pudgy needs the money. He's got groceries to buy.
2029? Not 2025?
7/1/2029? Why four years in advance? These grifters would likely want it now.
Bet Antar hates to hear this. All that save the land money.
The increase won’t take effect until 2029 because of the state statute on pay increases and general elections. Interestingly Vicksburg just voted to decrease the salary of the incoming mayor, and it can take effect July 1. Flaggs supposedly had said he would take a pay cut to fund some program if re-elected, but they voted for the pay cut even though he lost.
I agree with Mr. Foote. But they were against jxn water raising the rates a few dollars. The citizens will be paying for their raise.
$50,000??? Must be nice! That amount of money would help old Ted out!
Looks like Stokes trying to give Jackson a bad name by not voting yes along with these other elected criminals. But seriously, he seems to be the only one who actually cares about Jackson. The city is broke now, so where are they gonna find the monies for raises ?
Yes, give a governmental body the right to set their own salaries and you can expect them to get as much as they want. Fixing city problems does not concern them as long as they get their cut...
EVERY single councilperson is a failure at their job. In the private world they would have been thrown out a long time ago (and that includes Foote). KF is correct when he says "failure is so amply rewarded in Jackson".
Buzzards on a carcass.
I hope Jackson gets everything it deserves. I really mean that.
@2:20 pm. Stokes took the cowardly way out by abstaining instead of voting No. He will still get the pay increase while attempting to appear to be against it.
Salary increases should be performance-based. Please tell me, mayor & council members, what you have accomplished that justifies a raise.
They don’t have any money for the firemen.
You don't even need Carlos to have a clown show.
Dang, the governor’s salary is $120,000ish. How can The City of Jackson afford to pay the mayor $170,000?
The top elected officials in MS got an increase effective January 2024. Reeves is making $160k.

@ 2:03 p.m.: Is it being claimed that state law does not allow this body to raise its pay until the term beginning four years in the future?
"Salary increases should be performance-based."
Cut their salaries by 75% and put them on commission!
