History? What History?

The Mississippi Department of Education issued the following statement.

Today, the State Board of Education (SBE) voted to eliminate the administration and graduation requirement of the U.S. History statewide assessment beginning in the 2025-26 school year. All students will still be required to take and pass the high school U.S. History course to qualify for graduation.

State assessments in Algebra I, Biology and English Language Arts will continue to be administered and remain a graduation requirement. The U.S. History assessment was the only one not required by state nor federal law. The SBE’s actions included updating Board policies and accountability standards to reflect the elimination of the assessment.

“Though the U.S. History statewide assessment will be eliminated starting next school year, it’s important to emphasize that students will still learn U.S. History and will be required to successfully complete the course to graduate,” said Dr. Lance Evans, state superintendent of education. “Having fewer state tests required to graduate should be less taxing on educators, students and families alike.”

The Commission on School Accreditation voted to propose eliminating the U.S. History assessment in April. The SBE voted to accept the proposal for public comment during its regular monthly meeting in April. The proposal cleared the Administrative Procedures Act process with public comments. The public comment period was open from April 17, 2025, through 5 p.m. May 19, 2025.

Mississippi, staying last one bureaucratic decision at a time.
History is not there for you to like or dislike. It is there for you to learn from, and if it offends you, even better, because then you are less likely to repeat it. It's not yours to erase, modify, or destroy.

Of course they did.

Those who forget (or don't know) the past are doomed to repeat it.

Dumbing down our kids - one policy decision at a time.

The dumber they are, the more likely they will be to vote MAGA. This is a good plan from the Republicans and should dumb down the youth a little more. Big win!

Further dumbing down of society.

Yup

As tempting as it is to say this is a bad thing I'd gather few posters on this site had to take a standardized test to graduate high school focused on the content of US History.

I see this as neither good or bad. Students will still have to pass the course to graduate high school but without a standardized test, just how there is no standardized test for American Government, World History, Mississippi Studies, Geometry, English 4, or a bevy of courses one must finish to get a diploma.

Many teachers and parents complain there are too many standardized tests now and they are correct, but the decision to take one away causes a public outcry when the requirement hasn't been in place for that many years.

And in a year or two MDE will brag about graduation rates rising.

We should be more like Florida. Simply eliminate those aspects of U.S. History that makes us look bad and teach the rest with great pride. It works.

Students attending the government schools could care less about American and Mississippi history.

If I had to guess, being a nationally based test, it's full of false, dumbed down, liberal/woke agenda jibberish, that if you're taught real American history, and then take the dumbed down test, you're not going to do well because you weren't fed the propaganda in a lot of schools in conservative areas, where the smart kids are.

Shadows of the memory hole in the book "1984".

So we are creating DEI students? This will affect the kids and our future society. Who cares how taxing it is on educators? IT'S THEIR DAMN JOB!! We are so soft as a society and this is why. Just give them a participation diploma. I guess Mississippi enjoys being on the bottom of every list for anything good. Pathetic.

Back in the day there were no state tests or "assessments." Students simply had to take and pass the required courses at legitimate high schools. It seems to me that graduates then were much better educated than the average now. Just my $0.02.

Democrats love this because history is racist and they always try to rewrite it anyways to fit their narrative.

Disappointing. The DOE should be better than this.

The book 1984 is over 200 pages long, there’s no way you’ve read it

Interesting that so many here are pro history when just yesterday they were complaining about Sid's post about Ole miss and its history and the national guard deployment. "Beating a dead horse" "We don't need to be reminded" Now we care about history? lol okay

So tell me, why do you think people that vote Republican are dumb? That is about 70-80 million Americans in this country.

Anonymous said...

I'm willing to bet Brandon Mayor Butch Lee is happy about this.

Only Democrats who know little actual history would think that. Why do you think the poorest and least educated precincts in the country vote for Democrats consistently?

The next few Years they'll remove Math, Science etc, etc & after while there'll be No requirements and Mississippi's Test Scores soar. We have a History, we Learn from History. Today many don't know what the Constitution of the United States of America is nor many other Documents we learned in the '60's, '70's or '80's. Our Children today don't Know what they Don't know because of what yall call Progress. This is only Dumbing down Society, preparing to make changes along the way. Wrong path for our Children to move Forward in Life. Let's share the Information with them, let's Learn from prior Mistakes & move Forward with some Bad Mistakes from History. Hoping for a Better Mississippi & a Better United States of America. Better together-

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
