Newhouse Gets 14 Years for Manufacturing Automatic Weapons

The Justice Department issued the following statement.

A Jackson man was sentenced to 168 months in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm and engaging in business as a manufacturer of firearms, announced U.S. Attorney Darren J. LaMarca and Special Agent in Charge Kurt Thielhorn of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

According to court documents, Kent Edward Newhouse, 41, possessed firearms on or about July 13, 2022 and July 20, 2022, and engaged in the business of manufacturing firearms from April to July 2022.  In April 2022, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives discovered through a confidential informant that Newhouse was using 3D-printers to manufacture auto-sears, which are firearm components designed to cause semi-automatic firearms to function as fully automatic machineguns.  Under federal law, auto-sears are themselves machineguns.  On July 13, 2022, Newhouse sold a confidential informant a firearm and several auto-sears.  On July 20, 2022, a search warrant was executed at Newhouse’s residence, where additional firearms and auto-sears were located.  The government also obtained videos of Newhouse operating fully functional machineguns.  Newhouse was previously convicted of felony sale of controlled substances in Madison County in 2009.

Newhouse pled guilty on September 1, 2022 to two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm and one count of engaging in business as a manufacturer of firearms.

Newhouse is a convicted felon.  He pleaded guilty to two felony counts of selling controlled substances in Madison County in 2009.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Jackson Police Department investigated the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Bert Carraway and Andrew W. Eichner prosecuted the case.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence, and to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone. On May 26, 2021, the Department launched a violent crime reduction strategy strengthening PSN based on these core principles: fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities, supporting community-based organizations that help prevent violence from occurring in the first place, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring the results.

Kingfish note: This website broke the story last summer.  JJ reported on July 22, 2022:

The ATF arrested Kent Newhouse on July 21 for manufacturing machine pistols at his home just a few feet away from where children play golf at the Country Club of Jackson. Newhouse is the son of former Clarion-Ledger publisher John Newhouse.

ATF Special Agent Micah Snyder submitted an affidavit as part of an application for a complaint and arrest warrant against Kent Newhouse.  The ATF suspected Newhouse of possessing firearms, auto-sears, and a 3D-printer capable of manufacturing auto-sears even though he was a convicted felon. An auto sear converts a semi-automatic firearm such as an AR-15 to a full-automatic weapon.

A confidential informant told the agent in April that Newhouse was trying to produce auto-sears for Glock pistols.  The police got on the trail but had no luck until the CI reported on July 7 that Newhouse was trying to sell several auto-sears designed for "AR-style pistols and rifles."  Newhouse allegedly produced four different videos that showed him shooting two different fully automatic machine guns and sent them to the CI.

The CI said Newhouse showed him a full automatic AR pistol, four drop-in auto sears for AR-style firearms, and two pistols.  The two parties moved from talking to actually buying and selling.  The affidavit states:

9.   On Monday, July 11, 2022, the same confidential source advised your affiant that NEWHOUSE was willing to meet with the confidential source at his residence, 13 Glen Eagles Drive, Jackson, Mississippi 39211, on Wednesday, July 13, 2022, and sell the source the four auto-sears for $400.00. The confidential source stated NEWHOUSE was also willing to sell an AR-style machine gun in his possession for $2,000.00....

10.  On Wednesday, July 13, 2022, your affiant conducted a monitored and controlled purchase of firearms from NEWHOUSE at his residence. During this purchase, NEWHOUSE sold the confidential source an AR-style pistol with an auto-seat· attached and two additional auto-sears for a total cost of$1,800.00. NEWHOUSE knowingly possessed these items prior to selling them to the confidential info1mant. These items were then recovered by the ATF. The AR-style pistol is identified as an Anderson Manufacturing pistol, model AM-15, serial number 21395261. The AR-style pistol was subsequently function-tested by the ATF and was preliminarily determined to be a machine gun.

Glen Eagles and CCJ residents said they have complained to the police about Newhouse for several years.  Sketchy individuals visited the home at all hours of the night.  To say neighbors lived in fear of Newhouse is an understatement.

Newhouse is a convicted felon.  He pleaded guilty to two felony counts of selling controlled substances in Madison County in 2009.

His mother, Brenda Newhouse, owns the Glenn Eagles Drive home that is in a small gated street adjacent to CCJ.   She is divorced from John.

* The golf course behind the house across the street from the Newhouse home is not the "championship" golf course.  It is a separate nine-hole course used by children of members.

JPD also busted Newhouse for drug dealing.  JJ reported on August 10, 2022:

JPD arrested Kent Newhouse on July 20 for allegedly being.a convicted felon in possession of a firearm as well possession  of 80 grams of meth, 14 pills of oxycodone, and 57 pills of ecstasy at his residence on 13 Glenn Eagles Drive in Jackson.

However, Mr. Kent was not indicted by a Hinds County grand jury.  The locals probably deferred to the feds.

How many of these autosears were used in crimes? probably none.

Illegal by regulation, not law. Thus unconstitutional.

I have a legal gatcrank and it’s fun until you realize that you just wasted $100 in ammo for less than 1 minute of fun. I would rather take my time with my 110 year old Swiss Mauser and some handloads.

What crime ? He’s as innocent as Phil & Brett!

Anonymous said...

Why aren’t all convicted felons with guns given the same sentencing ?

Anonymous said...

Why was he making these autosears when supposedly you can get them online cheaply?

@1:55 PM
Lawyers

People who can afford good ones receive better results.
That’s why some lawyers command a high salary and some sit around approving blog comments all day and begging for donations.

In my humble, personal opinion, the hoops and risks of owning any full auto completely outweigh any benefit. While they might be cool, they render any otherwise excellent firearm nearly unusable because of their inaccuracy. And they waste way too many bullets. If you are talking .9 mm or lower, that may not be cost-prohibitive. But on a 5.56mm NATO or larger it get's really expensive really quickly. But some people just like the idea of having a machine gun, I guess.

1:55: because most such felons don’t manufacture their firearms.

@3:09 PM - I paid 20-cents a round for my 7,500 rounds of 5.56. When the SHTF I will be ready. In the mean time I can shoot to my heart's content at the Magnolia RPC.

@3:44 - how many people are you planning to kill?

Anonymous said...

@11:08 - all of them were used in at least one crime, hence the prison sentence.

@12:14 - what do you define as the difference between laws and regulations? Are you a sovereign citizen as well?

@2:57 - Kingfish is not a lawyer. You were right about the rest.

Walking away from Mississippi is the best thing I ever did !

@3:09 - " If you are talking .9 mm or lower,"

You realize that bullet would be 0.035", or 3 caliber, and it would weigh less than 2 grains...

"Why aren’t all convicted felons with guns given the same sentencing?"

Depends on who's prosecuting them, State v Feds.

"Walking away from Mississippi is the best thing I ever did!"

I saw you up at the rest-stop near Grenada. You had sandwiches in a yellow bandana, hanging from a long stick on your shoulder. I wondered how long it would take you to get to Memphis. I admire you for doing it in sandals.

I will need those 7,500 rounds of 5.56 and 500 rounds of 12 gauge that I bought at a bargain pre-covid price the way things are going. I also have kevlar, MREs, water purification kit, and a huge generator.

1 year would be enough for anyone on this charge.

If that's all he did, he'll be safe in prison. He will be admired. In fact, he'll be given a committee chair position upon arrival.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
