JPD issued the following statement.
The Jackson Police Department is investigating the shooting death of a minor that occurred at approximately 12:45 on August 3, 2025. JPD responded a residence on Lampton Avenue where they located the deceased body of an eight-year-old male child. The death appeared to be the result of a gunshot wound. The JPD Homicide Unit, Mobile Crime Unit and the Hinds County Coroner were called to the scene. A weapon believed to be used in this case was recovered and logged into evidence. The child’s father, 28-year-old Quaron Hilliard was taken into JPD custody and transported to JPD headquarters to be interviewed and afterwards arrested and charged with Felony Child Neglect. Hilliard appeared in Municipal Court this morning where he received a $50K bond. Detectives from the JPD Investigation Unit are continuing to investigate circumstances of the child’s death.
