Fred Haynes might be gone but he should not be forgotten. Son of a slave, World War I veteran, longtime Hinds County Sheriff and Mississippi Valley Title employee, he lived quite a life. He passed away in 1992. I discovered his story while digging through the newspaper archives. Enjoy reading about him.

Great find; on another note, just from those clippings, it's sad to see how much print newspapers, not just the CL, have declined in just the last 20 to 30 years. Truly living in a different world.
Thank you!! Great story about a fine man!
Very nice.
Great read and greater man. Thanks for sharing!!!
Can anyone identify Mr Haynes unit in WWI?
It's in one of the articles.
Thanks for sharing this.
Great story.
A man who should be remembered indeed. Excellent research, Kingfish.
Great find and story Kingfish!
Thank you, Kingfish.
Interesting articles - have to admit, you had me with your headline saying he was a former sheriff and son of a slave. Guess 'working for' the sheriff and 'being' the sheriff is one and the same to some 'journalists'.
But anyway, was an interesting read about some old Jackson history (including the School Pictures story alongside.)
I knew Mr. Fred. My Mom worked for MVT for many years. When I was a little kid he would give me a fifty cent piece every time I saw him. I think he walked around with a pocket full of them to give out to kids. I never saw him without a smile on his face. Truly a great man.
Back when Journalism was a profession. Thanks KF.
1991 was a great year. I was a geeky little 10 year old brat who loved going to Service Merchandise to gawk at electronics, to Metro Center to gawk at video games Sears and in Electronics Boutique, Campos to gawk at computers, and then just three years later, Bebop to gawk at CDs. 💿
His accomplishments were " in spite" of the times in which he lived which made them far more remarkable. He found a way not to be threatening to white racists so they could stay in denial.
Great catch Fish. Got to be dough in "curating" these for oldsters, c'est moi.
A life well lived. Thanks for sharing.
Enjoy reading about our Vets.
This is really interesting and appreciated Fish. Such a good read.
