Who? Me?

What does it take to get a sinkhole fixed in Jackson?

Ward 1 Councilman Ashby Foote asked that question yesterday as he reported the bureaucratic bumbling he ran into when trying to get a massive sinkhole fixed on Fallview Drive in the Ridgewood Park subdivision.

So the city won't do anything,  JXN Water says it can't do anything because a private line causes the sinkhole.  Meanwhile, the sinkhole eats up more on the road, rendering Fallview Drive more unsafe day by day.

Just one more example of why Jackson doesn't work.

Jackson - the poster child for a third world, no, make that a 4th world city. But as long as the Fondren and Belhaven residents have their lattes all is good.

$50 Johnny Horhn's administration passes the buck.

When Johnny told Gibbs post-general to tamp down the enthusiasm I knew right then and there that nothing was going to change.

It’s the last day of Lumumba’s reign of incompetence. This probably deserves it’s own thread.

You deserve what you will tolerate, and it aint bottomed out yet…

@8:56
“First World” meant NATO/US Allies. Third world was anyone not allied with the USSR or NATO/US. There is/was no “fourth world” and it is also why we say “developing nations” now since the USSR is gone. Plenty of developing countries were allied with either NATO or the USSR during the cold war. So they weren’t the “third world” since they were part of one of the two worlds.

Too many Americans use phrases they dont even understand. And then wonder why the rest of the world thinks y’all are stupid.

The picture looks like sinkhole started on private property. Wouldn't it be on homeowner to fix? Jxn water is not responsible for private property.

Kingfish said...

True, dat. However, the sinkhole is now part of the road itself. A true public hazard.

Thanks for the lesson, KAREN.

Spoken like a true democrat. How many millions is Jackson owed in back water bills? Pretty sure that money would go a long way.

Anonymous said...

Seems to me that if the property line is what's causing damage to city property but the owner won't address it, you cut the water to the property, remove the meter and tell them they can have their service back when they're in compliance. Period.

Anonymous said...

In a month or two it will be water under the bridge. Right?

Anonymous said...

"Private line"??? If it was a private water line I believe the hole would be full of water. If it's a private sewer service line then all the dirt in the hole is going into JXN Water's sewer line and it will become their problem. What other "private line" could it be???

The new mayor has his work cut out for him. I am literally praying for him. I mean we can't go much lower. He has 3 or 4 top priorities. More police, compitent public works director are 2 of them. The city was destroyed in 8 years.

Maybe a tad of sarcasm with the 4th world?

Anonymous said...

Did Mr. Foote say if the homeowner fixed their private line?

Anyone that thought Hohrn was going to be anything other than a talking head never saw him "perform" in the legislature.

Anonymous said...

@9:24 you dont know what a being a “Karen” means either. I didn’t ask to speak to your manager!

The residents of Jackson are getting what they voted for. They voted for it again, this time with a different name. One day, with enough time, they will do something different.

Jackson - if Cabrini-Green were a city.

Anonymous said...

Mr. Horhn has not taken office yet.

Anonymous said...

And the definition of insanity is what?

Anonymous said...

You Jacksonians who think there will be drastic changes in Jackson with Hohrn at the helm need to THINK AGAIN!
You can't upright the Titantic. The wound is fatal.

Excellent strategy by Ashby. Go public with these videos from all over your ward every single week. TV Newsers will lap this stuff up.

The only thing that matters in Jackson is skin color, another mayor with the correct skin color and a new set of problems.

Anonymous said...

He pulled the hat from Stoke's playbook! Maybe there is a rabbit in there as well...

If it's a sewer break it is not active or he would be knee-deep in raw boo-boo.

Anonymous said...

Heaven forbid any of those he mentioned could all meet together at the house and come up with a plan to divide responsibility for repairs...

Anonymous said...

Get it fixed by greasing the council and mayor their fair share. Duh.

Anonymous said...

Start chunking old couches, recliners, washing machines and garbage bags into the hole, just like is done all along our roadsides, and the hole will soon fill up.

This issue doesn't "undermine property values" and "undermine the confidence in city goverment". Unfortunately, that was done long before this sinkhole started.

I work in water/sewer utilities. Water/sewer services should always extend at least to the property line for the "point of service". Then the homeowner runs the rest of the way to the house. That is because you don't want the homeowner having their private water or sewer line on city right-of-way. When that happens, you can have a situation like this where the homeowner won't fix it, but the real damage is to the public infrastructure.

Does anyone down there understand basic public works?

10:36 - Einstein, what do you suggest they do different? Pay's horrible and the selections aren't much better.

Anonymous said...

Maybe he should read the city ordinances. Sec. 110-9. - Procedure when sidewalks, curbs and holes in grass plot areas are found dangerous; liability for damage.
(a)If in the judgment of the city engineering section of the utilities division of the public works department, any existing sidewalk or curb requires a repair, or has become so out of alignment so as to be dangerous to the traveling public, or, where a hole exists in the grass plot between the sidewalk and the curbline, the city engineering section of the utilities division of the public works department shall first serve written notice on the owner, agent or tenant of the abutting property requiring repair to be made on such sidewalk or curb, or requiring the hole in the grass plot area to be closed, all to be completed within ten days. Thereafter, the city engineering section of the utilities division of the public works department shall report the necessity for the construction of the repairs at the next regular meeting, and thereafter the city council shall proceed to declare such work necessary.(b)If any damage to any person or animal or property arises as a result of the property owner, his agent or tenant, neglecting, failing or refusing to make the repair or fill the hole, then the city attorney shall file suit against such property owners for any damage that the city may be required to pay.

Some people will spend more time and energy avoiding a job than it would take to actually do it.

That's a common problem, and it isn't just in Jackson. But the Lumumba administration seems to have elevated it to an art form.

Anonymous said...

Did Stokes start a side gig selling name hats to other elected officials? I don't recall seeing Foote wearing his name hat until this. Maybe Foote can do a raw boo boo remix featuring Stokes to bring attention to this problem.

You don't know much about sewers.

If in the judgment of the city engineering section of the utilities division of the public works department ...

The Lumumba administration has been such an honest broker ... and highly competent too.

If the city can mow an overgrown lot or tear down a public nuisance structure and bill/sue the owner, why can't the same be undertaken in a case like this? If there's a loophole, it needs to be addressed.

Sounds like 9:34 and 1:35 are on the right track.

Elect competent people in. The only thing Jackson wants is another Black mayor. When race is the only thing you vote for, you get what you get. Where is the diversity in that office?

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
