May need to pony up some more dough. Before anyone takes aim at my pun, or comes gunning for me, hold your horses and be stable. Laughter is good for the soul. Give it a shot.
Do you think you are funny?
This is such a senseless act. Hope they solve this.
I bet it was a deer hunter tired of sitting all day in a deer stand looking for something that moves to shoot.
If it was shot with a .22, it was probably a kid - deer hunters don't use a .22.
A deer hunter with a .22? You betcha.
this is the work of meth head deer headlighters.
they use a .22 because of the minimal report.
they go out on christmas when a lot of people are shooting fireworks and gun shots blend right in.
they work that area because deer there have little to no hunting pressure so they downright tame.
they can't find a deer so they thrill kill livestock.
Deer hunters don't hunt movement. They hunt deer.
8:20, I've never heard of anyone hunting deer with a .22.
How many deer hunters do you know that hunt with a .22 caliber rifle?
They're putting a lot of effort and resources into this. Ballistics? Heck if JPD put 1/10 this effort into solving murders, they'd cut the homicide rate in half.
A .22 is a interesting choice. Low noise, but it took a well placed shot to take down the horse. I'm betting these were either kids missing around or a jealous lover taking out his/her anger on these horses.
The story says they determined the bullet caliber is .22. It does not say .22 LR. Could have been a .223/5.56 NATO. For that matter there are plenty of other .22 caliber centerfire rounds other than .223.
Lots of deer have been killed with .223 and for that matter .22 LR. Some people shoot deer with one of the .17 caliber rimfires. People used to kill their hogs with 22s. I saw it done as a child. Head shot.
How many dads whose boys drive pickups are now going to turn over their kid's .22 for ballistics testing?
Anybody ever think that the owner/s were tired of the cost of upkeep? Hayburners are not cheap, neither are their riders when life's circumstances force individuals to support both.
Lotta deer hunters on here today protesting too much.
Given the weather, I'm a bit surprised by the time frame and doesn't the stable check the horses later that that in the evening or have a " stable boy" that lives in the stable area do it? I think the police should consider 7:51 AM's observation. If I had a horse there, I'd be considering another stable. Horse don't need a showy stable, just one that is well managed and makes certain every horse is accounted for and not injured in the evening. There should be a human on the premises.
I hate it when I hear of any livestock being shot but I wouldn't shed a tear over a dead Canada goose
That area is clearly past its prime.
@ 5:13, no it's not a .223/5.56 NATO round, if so they would've referenced that. Most people equate a .22 as a .22 LR or a standard .22 round. I'm not sure which one the police are referencing, but I'm certain they are referring to a .22 round. That area they're referencing I don't believe is accessible by a vehicle (at least not to my knowledge), south of the farm between Reunion and Cherry Hill, which means someone must've either been on an ATV or on foot, which would leave me to believe the perp(s) are local to the area. Hope they catch whoever it is.
Bravo @ 9:40 AM for "Canada" goose instead of Canadian Goose. Pet peeve of mine.
I have read these are not "True" Canada Geese...They are some kinda Hybrid that is too Stupid to Migrate, they are "Home" here...Lucky Us...
@ 9:43, refer to the story about the Jackson firefighters conditions for a place past it's prime.
Madison is lost.
Redneck of the Month
I'm told that the horses were in the South Fenced areas (equals no road shot), they were owned by a local Widow, they were not insured. She has kept them there for children to ride. My guess is teen from very nearby neighborhood.
The 'stupids' are out in force on this one, drive-by posting, acting out for attention, giggling at themselves...not unlike people who get their kicks harming domesticated animals.
So, we’re really going to act like no deer hunter has ever been irresponsible with their weapon? Come on now. The area’s full of folks who spend all day in a stand, and when nothing with antlers walks by, they’re looking for anything to shoot at to justify their ‘hunt.’ Horses just happened to be the unlucky targets this time. Makes you wonder how many ‘accidental’ kills go unreported every season.
I’ve seen every episode of Forensic Files and learned a good bit of knowledge regarding investigations. I’d start with a sweep of Reunion kids. Take note of the kids or parents who don’t volunteer time for an innocent interrogation. With TikTok, these kids and lot of parents might have a video of the crime. A quality investigator would have this solved in less than a week.
Learn the difference between 'hunter' and 'poacher'. They are NOT the same.
Majority of headlighters are young males (teens/early 20's) who are itching to shoot and don't appreciate the consequences of failing to identify the target. They just shoot at glowing eyes that could be a deer... or livestock... or worse. The consequences of headlighting are therefore severe (forfeit your weapon, your vehicle, steep fines, etc.) There are a few older backwards fools who headlight but they're very few because the juice just ain't worth the squeeze.
And then there are a few revenge shooters with an axe to grind, or very few insurance fraudsters.
My sympathy goes to the horse owners, this is not something anyone should have to deal with, especially on Christmas eve. I hope the shooter(s) are caught and fully held to account.
10:06, it’s me. The story just says “22 caliber.” The fact that people see “22” and assume it’s a rumfore
10:06, this is 5:13. The story says “22 caliber rifle”. Have you considered that the .22 LR round can be fired from pistols? How do they know it was a 22 rifle if they found 22 LR bullets? I contend that it’s more likely that it was a .223. ARs are extremely common now and ammo for them is everywhere. If teenagers are put spotlighting they are more likely to use a high powered rifle round than a rimfire. These were not poachers accidentally shooting horses. While it is entirely possible to kill a horse with a 22 LR or 22 Magnum, the shots would have to be very well placed. I’m not saying it wasn’t a rimfire, just pointing out that people leapt to this conclusion without having all the facts. Neither you, I, or evidently anyone else commenting here knows what round was used. But it is not obvious to me that the story confirms it was a 22 rimfire.
ATTN: Madison PD Hurry up and hire @6:19 PM. He could show y'all a thing or two about solving crimes.
Doesn't make me wonder at all. If you had ever hunted in your life, you'd know nobody deer hunts with a .22 rifle. And no deer hunter looks for just anything to shoot after an unsuccessful hunt. He just gets ready for the next day. It probably eludes you that these animals were shot long after dark, probably around midnight, when legit hunters were asleep. Turn that Beta-Male cap around.
What the hell is a rumfore?
It’s incidents like this that make a strong case for stricter gun control laws and tighter regulations on hunting practices. Clearly, not everyone with access to a firearm is responsible enough to handle it. Maybe it’s time to reevaluate who gets to hunt and what type of weapons are allowed in these areas. If hunters can’t even distinguish between wildlife and livestock, how can anyone defend the current state of hunting regulations?
I heard they found a deer on reunion parkway with its antlers cut off. I wonder if this is connected.
Be careful out there. I guarantee you that January 11 @ 6:50 is walking among you, loose in public, perhaps even voting in your precinct.
6:50 is lost as hell. Nobody confused a horse for another animal.
