Jackson leads the country yet again in the murder rate as we just can't get enough killin' here in the Bold New City. WLBT's C.J. Lemasters reported:
Jackson’s homicide rate has remained highest in the nation each year -- including 2024 -- when compared to similar-sized and major cities, according to a 3 On Your Side analysis of dozens of cities and their reported crimes. Article
The WLBT chart says it all.
That was the bad news. The good news is the homicide rate was 99.5 homicides per 100,000 residents in 2021 so progress has been made. Hurrah. The annual number of homicides for the last five years are:
2024: 111
2023: 118
2022: 133
2021: 160
2020: 128
2019: 83
2018: 84
Compare those statistics to the years with the highest number of homicides prior to 2017:
1995: 92
1994: 91
1993: 84
The number of homicides in 2016 was 68 and that was a ten-year high. There were 64 homicides in 2017. To provide a sense of proportion, the number of homicides in Mayor Lumumba's first full year as Mayor was 84, a twenty-year high.
Kingfish note: Homicides have done nothing but gone up since Chokwe Antar Lumumba became Mayor. Homicides were running in the 60's under Mayor Yarber as Lee Vance proved to be an effective chief. The record for homicides prior to 2017 was 92. As JJ stated in 2021:
the number of homicides per year in Jackson ranked in the top five each year during every year of his tenure. Mayor Lumumba ran off a good police chief, demoted his competent command staff, hid crime stats, pushed the DA to prosecute innocent police officers, instituted no-chase policies for almost anything, and benched cops who were dumb enough to defend themselves when fired upon.
Lumumba's legacy is shattering homicide records as the annual number of homicides has ranked in the top five for Jackson for every year he has been Mayor - when it wasn't setting records.

We’ve got a criminal for a mayor and another for a DA.
When your good at something, stick with it.
The Mayor promised a "Radical City"...he delivered!
What is missing is the number of people shot who lived. The total number of shooting victims (dead or survived) tells the whole story. But it's only a perception, right?
You've been calling the balls and strikes, accurately, for a long, long time Kingfish. Antard can hide the crime reports and he can hide his campaign finance reports, but he can't hide the murders. I still wish someone with standing would sue him and the City to force production of the campaign finance reports.
Where are all the Mississippi naysayers now???
I have no issue blaming the mayor, but let's don't forget that the judicial system in which the criminals face is very complicit. The catch-n-release program this blog frequently mentions and the lack of a DA with any desire to prosecute "certain" offenders is equally to blame. It's a perfect situation, almost as if organized!!!
10:22 is right. The real numbers of people shot, stabbed and beaten are never revealed because many are never reported to police. They are then turned over to the street justice tribunal for revenge.
Does the total number include the number of murders reported to and investigated by Capitol Police or is this JPDs only?
10:34 as well as 10:22 are on to something because there are many confounding variables that these statistics do not account for! I think the major variable being overlooked is average socioeconomic status of residents. These stats in their current display shown here, highlight differences between cities of average size, but it cannot be disputed that jackson residents are significantly less affluent (as a whole) than some on this list, which means violent crime will be higher.
All i am saying is apples and oranges........
About time for Chok to get himself another major award from some liberal group up in the northeast.
To be fair, the numbers have been improving since 2021, presumably because there aren't as many people left to kill.
Afluence? You are blaming this on a lack of afluence? Antard is affluent. Jody Owens is Affluent. They are both indicted criminals. And only i dicted for whT the FBI caught them doing RED HANDED. Meanwhile all these cigar bar dope deals are going under the radar because Da Mair appoints Chiefs who ignore his cronies crimes. This isn’t about affluence. It is about a culture of violence and easy money drug deals and simple thievery.
"They are then turned over to the street justice tribunal for revenge."
As Skinner said in the Simpsons "Ah, there's no justice like angry mob justice"
Is mayair still getting a city check if he has not filled campaign reports??
you cannot deny that violent crime happens significantly more often in poor areas, thats all I am saying. I am not blaming anything, i am just stating that socioeconomic status IS A FACTOR
I'm not much of a movie, or TV watcher, I haven't been for nearly 40 years. But, it seems to me that the radical liberals are following a cheap Hollywood, or TV, script.
It doesn't seem to matter if it's the top of the food chain in the Oval Office, or the mayor of Jackson, Mississippi, the purpose, and intent are the same.
"Antard is effluent." There, I fixed it for you.
Is there an official song for the City of Jackson? We need one. Ideas?
11:17 you are on point however, murders and violent crime will decrease even more this year because the Hinds County DA found out his position wasn’t part time!
11:40 we're talking homicide not robbery or theft. You can take any number of common characteristics of killers and say one of them is significant if you're looking for an excuse. Marital status, age, location, educational background, mental health, gender, and yes poverty can all be cited along with other "factors" . But so what? Poverty was just as prevalent in 1970's when Jackson had a fraction of the current homicide rate. Blaming murders on "socioeconomic status" is just another dodge for those who have no real answers.
in 2021, Jackistan out-murdered Tijuana per capita.
@11:17 at current rate decline Jackson will be sub 130k by 2030.
Chowke reported that the number of homicides in 2025 are significantly lower than any prior year. Right?
Mathematically every time there is a murder the population drops by 1 & the % of murder vs population goes up. And not counting the number of families that flee Jackson as murders, crime, infrastructure, taxes & the arrest of corrupt public officials continue to increase & erode the quality of life in our capitol city.
The other dynamic to consider is city population decline. In 2020, the Jackson population was 153,000; in 2024, the population was 140,000. That's why it's helpful to calculate homicides per 100,000.
Just one more term in office and Chowke will fix all of Jackson's ills. Right?
As I have said in the past, the murder rate and other violent crimes are a direct result of the breakdown of the traditional two parent family where there is no positive male presence to guide young boys/men. This has created a public health crisis in the Black community. Until the positive aspects of virtue are adopted by society, there can be little hope that the situation will change.
12:01 Don’t Drink The Water by Justin Townes Earle fits Jackson pretty well
Does that number of "Reported Homicides" include the ones investigated by the Capitol Police? If not, how many do they report for 2024?
Includes 7 handled by Capitol Police
Let's look at this from a positive perspective: At least Jackson is getting the credit it deserves! We always see news reports about the horrendous level of homicides in the bigger cities, like Chicago, New York, Baltimore, etc., because the actual number of no longer living people is so high in those cities. However, when you distill the numbers down to how likely you are to become non-living in a particular city, that's where Jackson really shines! The populace works hard EVERY year to keep this particular statistic, high, so it would be an outrage for Jackson not to rank with the big bois! Heck, think about it, it's nearly FOUR times more dangerous to live in Jackson than it is to live in Chicago! That's a genuine accomplishment worthy of credit!
Keep pushin' 'em Baby Chok! We didn't know what you meant by "radical" when you made your New Orleans speech, but little did we know you had a plan the whole time. Unfortunately, apparently only you know what the end game is......
The mayor likes to say that "with poverty comes crime" - like the only way out of poverty is robbing, stealing & killing.
Jackson: Small city, big crime
Assuming the statistics in the WLBT chart are correct, who would believe Jackson makes Detroit and Memphis look like paradise?
Are they criminals because they’re poor, or are they poor because they’re criminals?
Belying the old adage that any publicity is good publicity.
Actually , most list St Louis, but you can play with numbers. The real difference is how many murders are the result of domestic disputes vs the commission of a crime. It's also about the area of reporting...city limits or metro area? I spent Christmas in a state capitol that's not even on the list and there were 2 or more shootings every day for 4 days on their news.
Try to be honest with yourselves, it's that the population is now mostly non-white. That's the fault of the cowards who left and who had zero civic pride and who prefer "boxes made of ticky tacky" to classic architecture that can no longer be duplicated.
Look at the names of the other cities in this report. All of them mirror Jackson in terms of inner city poverty, socio-economic stats and race.
It's absurd to attempt to separate Jackson out, using some nutty theory of poor people. If you're truly looking for common denominators, look somewhere other than poverty.
The post at 11:07 is just one more attempt to say, "It ain't our fault. It's the fault of circumstance. Therefore we ain't responsible or accountable". Apples and oranges my potato.
