Catch & Release! Squawk! Mudbug Edition

It should come as not surprise to JJ readers that one of the alleged Mudbug Festival shooters is a participant in the Hinds County Catch & Release program.

Hinds County deputies arrested Calvin Berry, Jr. and Leedrick Trim Saturday night during a shootout at the Mudbug Festival held at the Mississippi State Fairgrounds.

Trim is charged with not one, not two, not three, but four counts of aggravated assault.

Trim has no prior records.  However, Junior can not say the same.  He is charged with two counts of aggravated assaults, adding to his rather sizeable list of felony charges he has been accumulating in the Hinds County criminal justice system.

The first indictment took place in December 2020.  A Hinds County grand jury indicted him for three counts of armed robbery and one count of auto theft.  Bond was set at $90,000 but he submitted a request for a mental evaluation, a tactic designed to prolong the prosecution for a few years.  The case has been repeatedly continued.

A grand jury served up another batch of indictments against Berry for armed robbery and carjacking in August 2021. The case was continued in February.  Believe it or not, Berry was arrested again for armed robbery in July.

The case is assigned to Circuit Judge Faye Peterson.  It is Faye Peterson who keeps lowering his bond to where he can get out of jail.

So ? No one cares about any of this. And you can see it in the faces of EVERY elected official in this county and those who live downtown. Hell, most of them just work here and make the drive in. Dodge a pothole and leave before dark.

Because it’s been a while, it bears repeating: If you have the means to leave Jackson, but stayed anyway, you chose to expose yourself and your family to ferals like these. Good luck.

worthless scumbag pieces of shit

Anonymous said...

Worthless pieces of shit!!! And the elected/appointed officials in Hinds County and Jackson that choose to do nothing about it are even worthless than them. Until a state or federal takeover of Jackson, nothing will change.

He’s from a nice house in Brandon?

Special rules for special people.

Mental evaluation as a stall tactic? Um. No..

Anonymous said...

Berry could qualify as a violent habitual offender before he even gets to trial on his first set of charges.

Anonymous said...

Looks like the system is working well for them. If you can't maintain a water system and do something as simple as pick up garbage can you really expect anything more than this. Hope this is politically correct enough for you KF!

Most sane jurisdictions will keep one who claims to be insane i.e. in need of a mental evaluation, incarcerated pending the outcome of the evaluation and probably even trial. The simple fact that he takes and uses a gun in all of his crimes shows he knows the difference between right and wrong and frankly he appreciates the consequences of his actions as he knows if he doesn't bring a gun to an armed robbery it's not gonna be successful. I bet he even knows that if he pulls the trigger on that gun a bullet comes out and could potentially hurt someone. I do wonder sometimes if the defense bar, who keeps getting him out of jail through securing bonds etc., if they don't bear some responsibility when these creatures go back out and do the same thing again and then they help them again make bond so they can go out and do more. How could you even sleep at night knowing I'm the lawyer that convinced the judge and the prosecutor to let this guy out on bond again and he goes out and shoots people.

More likely his mom moved him to brandon to get away from Jackson. My wife sees that all the time in Brandon High.

The Brandon address given for Berry appears to be the address of the attorney who signed the transfer order for his August 2021 indictment.

Kind of sad. Kid is only 16 and shooting at people. Already has a case when he was 14-15 years old. Safe to say he has a very unstable home life with zero guidance.

Three types of people that live in Jackson, 1 - Those that can't leave for whatever reason, 2. Those that won't leave for fear of being called racist and 3. those that prey on the first 2.

Frequent grammar offense on JJ, even some claiming to be attorneys are guilty: using "that" instead of "who or whom" which are de rigueur as pronouns to reference person(s), the former for subjective case, the latter for objective case.

I'm not a grammar cop, but this error bugs me to where I lose the writer's whole attempt to communicate when I hit that roadblock. Thanks.

So he's still on the run ? This should make many folks a bit nervous.

Check out additional facts at WLBT. Jackson Municipal Judge Taurean Buchanan gave no bond to the defendant charged with violent crimes. Then, County Judge McDaniel lowered total bond to $400,000. Then, Circuit Judge Peterson inexplicably lowered it to $90,000.

In this instance, the blame falls on one particular Circuit Judge, not the entire Hinds County/Jackson court system.

Makes you ponder the idea of bringing hip hop acts to the Brandon Amp.....you goofs acting as if all the thuggery is central to Jackson. These are 14 and 15 year olds !!! It is not the same as it use to be and YOUR 14 year old may be into the same shit. He/she just ain't been shot yet ! Then you will know.

Growing up in Jackson, about the only really fun things to do were Jubilee Jam, the state fair, and the St Patrick's day parade. All for the food and the music.

Now the thugs have thoroughly ruined that. What normal, law-abiding person (yes, of any racial group!) would want to be where these thugs will be, which is everywhere in Jackson and 110% at any festival/event.

So those fun events are gone. Jackson is so far gone it is not even remotely a debate or discussion. . .

Wow said...

How can we hold Faye Peterson accountable for this?

3:20 Lawyers are taught that they bear no responsibility for bad outcomes if they do a good job i.e. win for their client. It's an adversarial system based on winning not a determination of truth based on justice. Lawyers really believe this shit and it allows them to sleep at night.

I strongly disagree that you can't host events because of some idiots messing up this event. Capital Police numbers have grown, they fall under DPS now and they definitely should have been working the event at the fairgrounds.

Many moons ago, JPD and Hinds County Sheriffs Dept would patrol the state fair with a major presence.

We need to do a better job of planning these events, involving security. We need a tri-county (Hinds, Rankin, Madison) L.E.O task force to manage these events.

The Highway Patrol should have been stationed northbound and southbound, on I-55, ensuring people are driving home safely.

JPD should've had people stationed at State Street, High Street, and Greymont. While Capitol Police had a more active role in handling the fairgrounds with the sheriff's dept.

Better patroling of the event would have helped to nip early escalations between whomever.

But bigger cities, with higher crime rates, still host events like this that are way larger and have no major hiccups.

It's 2021 - mass shootings happen all across this country. You can't just take your safety for granted, but you shouldn't punish law-abiding citizens by not hosting any more events because of a few rotten eggs. We just need to do a better job of planning these events, with security taking priority on day one.

This is what I mean when I say state supported violence. The chaos caused by these culturally Marxist judges is the point. Their desired political ends cannot occur in an environment of peace and prosperity.

Anonymous said...

I hate to say this but the lawyers are doing the job they are paid to do. It is the judges that drop the ball. The judges turn the thugs loose.

The guy with the long rap sheet lives in Brandon. So if I move out of Jackson and into Brandon I might wind up living next door to him or someone like him. How am I any safer or better off?

Mayor, Governor tell contradictory stories re: Fairground Shooting.

"I believe that our city is safe. Most instances of violence that we see in our city are interpersonal, they're not random," Lumumba said. "We can't aim all arrows at one target. There are layers, and we all have to work in combination with each other to reveal a safer environment."

Spoken like an incompetent failure at mayor, but an accomplished obfuscator.

Meanwhile, the Governor said "100 rounds were fired into the crowd."

The symphony will not relocate. Many big donors and sponsors live in Jackson. Get serious

4:06, It looks to me like the city judge who signed the two no-bond orders was Jeff Reynolds.

5:37. They don't care. They will be glad when the mostly white MSO is gone. They don't care.

Anonymous said...

Just saw on the news that the mayor says nearly all violent crime in the city is "interpersonal" - whatever that is. Shooting broadly into crowds on the midway is not interpersonal. It's a failure on so many levels. Jackson IS NOT SAFE, despite what the mayor said today.

5:46: The Commish is responsible for handling the security for such events. What they have always done is contract out with HCSO and other law enforcement agencies. There doesn't need to be any special task forces created as you suggested. The question to be asked is how many LEO's were on duty that night af the festival. We don't know but it is a question worth asking. If there were 50, then ok. If there were only 15 or so, problem. From what I can tell there was Hinds, Edwards, Capitol Police. Might have been Byram but trying to nail that down. JPD works outside the perimeter unless hired by MDAC to work inside the fairgrounds.

Anonymous said...

5:46. Great missive but the shorter answer is don't have these type events in Jackson.....move them to Rankin or south Madison County. If anyone reading this is not familiar with the criminal underbelly of Jackson's fatherless youth, keep dreaming.

Anonymous said...

Glad all those victims of carjackings at gunpoint identified the criminals since they knew them personally.

Anonymous said...

Cancel the fair. Move it to rankin. Either the thugs don’t show up or the thugs show up and get arrested. Problem solved.

Anonymous said...

Believe it or, not these two can be fixed.

The problem is they have too much freedom and no supervision.

Bring 'em to me and in one year they will be productive members of society with no desire to commit any more crimes.

We will start by planting this year's garden. Then we will move to bricklaying, roofing, sheetrock work and painting. Of course, Saturdays will be workdays and Sunday's we will go to church.

Their asses will be so tired and worn out the only goal they will have is to get in the bed. I promise you, it works.

More Brandon thugs causing trouble. Keep your trouble in Brandon!

Anonymous said...

If any municipality doesn’t host events like this, they are called racists. If Brandon doesn’t have hip hop gangsta music at the Ampitheator, then they will be called racists. Have them and this eventually happens…. So it’s a catch 22 for politicians…

Anonymous said...

"Most instances of violence that we see in our city are interpersonal, they're not random"

Lumumba is talking about gang violence, though he won't come out and say it plainly.

7:25. It only works if they show up and get tired. They would never stay long enough and they will not listen to someone who knows the truth about the consequences of actually working. You forgot to leave you phone number and address.

Anonymous said...

KF nailed it. The “Commish” was responsible for security on state property, screwed up big time, so then he tries to foist responsibility for his mistakes onto the Hinds County judicial system. Trim had a clean record and was not on bond. He’s there shooting people regardless; probably the same for the dead 14 year old shooter.

A “law and order” Repub. screws up, people get shot on state property at a family oriented event he is 100% responsible for, yet it’s all somebody else’s fault. Pitiful.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
