Need for Cash + Need for Cash = ________.

Note: The headline may change when I think of a better one. KF

To say Barksdale Today reporter Anna Wolfe rocked the Mississippi political world yesterday is an understatement.  Ms. Wolfe obtained a slew of text messages between former Governor Phil Bryant and others that were quite revealing.  Simply put, the Governor and Brett Favre saw a chance to cash out on an up and coming company that coincidentally is at the center of the DHS scandal, Prevacus.  Prevacus hoped for government funding.   DHS happened to have government funding.  Two sides of the equation, both wanting cash, is a recipe for business success or unfortunately, corruption.  Ms. Wolfe reported:

Text messages obtained by Mississippi Today reveal NFL quarterback Brett Favre briefed Gov. Bryant about the flow of state grant funds to his experimental drug project, a deal that was shielded from public view. Bryant was all set to accept stock in the company hours after he left office — then arrests were made.

Former Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant used the authority of his office, the weight of his political influence and the power of his connections to help his friend and retired NFL quarterback Brett Favre boost a fledgling pharmaceutical venture.

Then he tried to cash in on the project when he left office, text messages show.

Favre believed he could make millions as an early investor in a drug company. He just needed a little more political and financial capital to push the enterprise into the end zone.

“It’s 3rd and long and we need you to make it happen!!” Favre wrote to the governor in late December 2018, according to text messages recently obtained by Mississippi Today.

“I will open a hole,” Bryant responded, piggybacking on the football metaphor.

Less than a week later, Favre would meet with Bryant’s welfare officials to strike a deal for a $1.7 million investment in the biomedical startup Prevacus, which promised it had found a treatment for concussions. Prosecutors now say that money was stolen from a federal program intended to serve the state’s poorest residents – a pot of money that had virtually no oversight.

Bryant said he did not introduce Prevacus to Nancy New, the nonprofit director who made the payments and now faces bribery, racketeering and embezzlement charges.

But newly uncovered text messages show that, at the very least, Favre told Bryant that New had started funneling public funding to the drug company shortly after he began advocating on its behalf.

As governor, Bryant assisted Prevacus, the company at the center of Mississippi’s ongoing welfare embezzlement scandal, in finding investors and gaining favor with federal regulators.

Then, two days after he left office, Bryant agreed by text to accept stock in the company.

“Now that you’re unemployed I’d like to give you a company package for all your help,” Prevacus founder Jake Vanlandingham wrote in a Jan. 16, 2020, text. “…We want and need you on our team!!!”

“Sounds good,” responded the former governor, who was getting ready to take over a private sector lobbying firm. “Where would be the best place to meet. I am now going to get on it hard…”

In a three-hour-long interview with Mississippi Today on April 2, Bryant said that despite the timeline revealed through the candid messages – which he acknowledged “doesn’t look good” – he never intended on accepting stock in Prevacus and did not read his texts carefully enough to pick up on the fact that the company had received public funding in the first place.... Rest of article.

Kingfish note: Read the rest of the story.  Ms. Wolfe's fingers are probably calloused and the shoe leather is worn out as well but this is some damn strong reporting.  Anyone familiar with the Bryant administration is not surprised at all by this story.  The Street Committee said that  Bryant and his glorified crew were trying to find every opportunity to "cash out" before they left the mansion.  This crowd never gave out a grant or contract unless an angle could be worked in some form or fashion.

9:23 for the win!

I have done this with my child.

My message was to go and build your life somewhere else. One day in the very near future, the entire state will look like Jackson.

We will never break out of the cycle of corruption and there is not enough wealth to offset the stealing being done in every single part of the government.

@ 9:23 AM

I left, and wish my family would follow suit. MS will always be home, and it has some amazing people and places, but it will NEVER get out of its own way to really succeed.

Equals : Same old same old and party does not matter. Farve and Bryant just proved how stupid they are ! They got caught. So many more out there like our current POTUS and his son........a certain elected official who has BBQ's in Bolton.....Mayors all over the state......county coordinators .....BOS's .......School supers......Tater........Dr.Dobbs....Louann......and the list goes on on and on. Our country has been fleeced to hell and no one will be held to account. Well, Brett and Phil will because they are white and Republicans.

After reading the article......

Nancy New = Crook, knew better but did it anyway knowing it was crooked.

Favre = doing what any start-up entrepreneur would do, looking under every rock possible to find capital.

Bryant? Well, the argument that "he didn't know" is going to stick much better to a jock with brain damage than to a sitting governor, that's for sure.

I've believed for many years that Mississippi has the money to do whatever its needs - but a large part of the state's revenues is being stolen, misused or misspent. It's not as poor as politicians claim - they're just taking the money for themselves or their friends.

Anonymous said...

Sounds like bullshit to me.

Sheer and utter bullshit.

Unlike Brett Favre, I have 35 years experience treating patients who have suffered concussions. I would stake my medical license nothing will ever come from this alleged "discovery".

And the amount of startup money available in the pharmaceutical world would stagger your imagination. Someone with a legitimate discovery that could improvement outcomes for a common, sometimes devastating injuries that often affects healthy teens that have barely started their lives - they don't need a washed-up jock to get involved until after it has been approved by the FDA and they want an endorsement when they start advertising it.

Ms. Wolfe's story on Phil Bryant might be 100% accurate. Admittedly I honestly have no idea. However, after reading her agenda driven articles on the Jackson water crisis, I simply can't trust her reporting. I am educated on the water situation, and involved in the Jackson water situation, and her reporting on it was full of bullcrap and agenda. Her goal was to blame it on poverty, race, and inequity. And she twisted the truth, avoided many facts, and misrepresented the facts to get the story she wanted. So she lost all credibility with me. She should have been fired for the Jackson water article.

It looks to me like Bryant tried to create some cover for himself by tipping off the state auditor to a small compartment of the News' (alleged) criminal conduct, which caused said auditor to declare that Bryant was "the whistleblower."

The defense of "I didn't read the text messages to which I was a party and to which I responded" may fly in politics, but I doubt a jury would buy it. Apparently, the burden of proof in politics is "conclusive evidence," while a jury merely requires "proof beyond a reasonable doubt."

Anonymous said...

The question is why has Shad White been sitting on this information about Phil Bryant for over 2 years? The information exposed in Anna Wolfe's article does not support the story the Auditor has been spinning.

This has been Phil's show from Day 1, and the Auditor appears to have helped cover his ass.

Anonymous said...

Where are the state dems on this then and now? All this corruption went on under their noses. No investigations, no hearings, no oversight whatsoever, not a single question... even after some of this came to light. Just taking a government check and going along to get along. It's sad that it took a reporter to do their job for them.

Anonymous said...

@10:10... You don't need to trust the reporter, just read the text messages.

Anonymous said...

Don't know Anna Wolfe. Don't know any Barksdales. I'm not a Dem or Rep but a proud independent (no one tells me how and what to think). All that said, Ms Wolfe has established herself as the premiere investigative journalist in our state. I can't recall this level of detailed information that is factually presented (i.e. actual text messages) rather than as hearsay (i.e. the Jerry Mitchell method).

Suggested headline: Greed Leads to Corruption (Always!)

Bill Dees said...

@10:31 AM Just who do think appointed Shad White to the Auditor position?

Anonymous said...

Why in the world would Phil agree to sit with a reporter and talk? That makes no sense. And who gave Anna Wolfe all those text messages? I’m guessing Shad, who now appears to have the need to cover his own ass instead of his mentor’s.

Anonymous said...

Notable at the end of the article it states that Shad White claimed Bryant to be the "whistleblower" regarding the welfare scheme. Really?? How convenient . . . .

Anonymous said...

Even if Phil is brought down by this, the next GOP governor will pardon his sorry ass and the same will go for the next POTUS if they are in his same gang. Mississippi taxpayers will get left with the bill to repay the stolen funds as is tradition. Hell is too good for these trash bags.

Anonymous said...

Phil forgot to mention how he is being set up by the woke left and cancel culture. He’s a Christian after all and there is just so much persecution of white Christians.

Anonymous said...

@10:31 I’m also just shocked that Shad’s super expensive “independent” third party audit didn’t reveal Phil’s involvement either.

Kingfish said...

Why would a CPA come across those text messages?

Anonymous said...

I'm a conservative and I am ALL for locking them all up.

If more Libs would agree that wrong is just wrong and stop blindly defending their woke masters, it would be beneficial.

Anonymous said...

@10:22 BINGO! Spot on! Shad's time is coming and he knows it. He and feel have been down together for a long time. Feel "appointed" him auditor and in turn Shad has been covering his ass. Shad was his campaign manager the second time he ran. And for all those rooting for this slime ball to become the next governor.. as jim hood says.. that dog aint gon hunt.

Anonymous said...

I am so thankful that I don't pay any state nor federal income tax. Zero, nada, zip, niente, nothing.

Anonymous said...

Shad was appointed by Bryant and (for whatever crooked reason) GOP didn't run anyone against Shad this last time around. So basically the only campaign Shad had run, is Phill Bryant's! If he actually had to raise money , talk to people, and run an actual campaign he wouldn't be on facebook talking half of the shit that he talks. Mouth of an alligator, bites like a baby lizard.

Anonymous said...

Shad won't touch phil because he's afraid of muddying the gop pond he hopes to swim in for the rest of his political life. Never forget that shad is a politician first and does whatever is best for him! Hopefully, the FBI will do shad's job and indict the entire bunch of thieves.

Also, some time ago, Nancy New hinted she was following orders in giving the grants. (The money she stole for her personal investment is another matter.) I would imagine that Nancy is singing like a canary and sharing whatever information she has with the Feds.

Anonymous said...

Come on guys, this is just the woke left going on a witch hunt against our conservative dear leaders. Don’t turn into a RINO just because the text messages are plain as day and available for everyone to see. Bryant was a true conservative, and therefore, it’s our duty to stick our collective heads in the sand and pretend this never happened.

Anonymous said...

12:14 is the politico reason why modern US politics sucks so bad and why we can't elect good people for anything these days.

Anonymous said...

Phil ain’t dumb enough to sit down and talk to a reporter without covering his ass. I bet he’s cut a deal already.

Anonymous said...

And what happened to "Beef Plant Billy" and all those millions, other than Sid Salter trying to preach him into heaven. Nothing new here, nor is it unique to Mississippi. You folks don't think Lying and stealing doesn't happen in other states?

Anonymous said...

Finally the finger points to the real criminal, Phil Bryant and his minions! I hope Shad, the Howdy Doody of state auditors, now goes after papa Phil, but he won’t. Of course Shad knew. He has never gone after Phil in any scandal, even when Phil was front and center ie DOC.
Maybe Shad misread his texts too.
Also, if New was so guilty, why did she attempt to get things started, the proper way, when dealing with the new head of DHS?
I hope more texts come out. Enough to put Phil, maybe Shad too, UNDER the jail.

Anonymous said...

It is not Phil’s fault. It is not Brett’s fault. It is the fault of thatHattiesburg college, Mississippi Southern. They obviously do not require ethics classes as we who attended Ole Miss and Ms. State were required to take.

There were lots of raised eyebrows when the young kid was appointed auditor. Now we know the rest of the story.

Anonymous said...

You have to remember, the only thing Shad had ever done besides go to school is run a political campaign. He’s a politician through and through and politicians take care of their own.

Anonymous said...

Remember when Phil Bryant partnered with Van Jones (and Empower Mississippi) to let criminals out of prison en masse?

Perhaps he was smarter than I thought! The First Step Act will be really beneficial for Phil in a few years.

Anonymous said...

1:28 - there are levels of “sin” and this one looks like a first class ticket straight to hell for those involved. The reverse Robin Hood they pulled off would make the cartels blush. I’ll stand up and say that I would never steal from the poor people in our state or anyone else, but I’m not a huge piece of shit. Maybe that’s just me, but I know plenty of others who I would feel confident trusting my money and friendship in without fearing they would scam me. Politicians are just a different breed and many don’t seem to have the moral compass that they so often preach.

This story was told to me decades ago about Phil & his Father. Phil was just a deputy then. His father worked at a Semi Dealership. Phils father saw an ex employee stealing CB Radios out of trucks & started shooting. Then called Phil. When Phil arrived he asked the other guy is he thought Daddy hit the guy. Fortunately he didn't & Nothing was EVER Said or any report made. About a week later, one of the sales people found bullet holes in New Trucks. They called a meeting trying to find out if anyone knew how it happened as they couldn't have been shot from the highway. Of course NO ONE Knew Anything.

Anonymous said...

@12:50 you lost me at "Phil ain't dumb enough......."

Anonymous said...

I wonder if Phil will stand by his previous statement:

"I’m not considering any pardons. I don’t intend to have one pardon before I leave (as) governor, or after. I will not pardon anyone,” Bryant said. “I do have that power. I do not think it should be used. I’ve said this before, I don’t think any executive should have the power to wash away a crime just because you get elected as governor.”

Get ready to open that hole real wide Phil. Sure hope the prison system you ran is a safe place for you and your future roommates.

How many press conferences has Chad White had on this? Just wondering. . .

Anonymous said...

Anyone who has been following the DHS saga enough to read some of the court filings has seen references to unnamed players playing a central role in the crimes. The actions of an unnamed player strongly suggested it was Phi Bryant, but only a few commenters made the connection, or were willing to. Meanwhile, the State Auditor moved aggressively against the New family and DHS employees by referring them for criminal charges, while Bret Favre only had to repay his stolen proceeds, approximately $1 million in public funds with no criminal charges for him.

Over 2 years have passed since the DHS scandal broke with no mention of Phil Bryant’s central role. Only now, after Anna Wolfe’s reporting, does the State Auditor apparently admit the involvement of ex-Governor Phil Bryant, who overnight turned the political neophyte Shad White, who had never held any elective office at any level, into a statewide elected official. Did it take that long to develop a workable cover story to both excuse Bryant’s culpability while at the same time excuse State Auditor Shad White’s shielding his chief benefactor Phil Bryant from civil and criminal liability?

[Bryant] acknowledged “doesn’t look good” – he never intended on accepting stock in Prevacus & did not read his texts carefully enough...

Mississippi Today Q&A with Gov Phil (excerpt)
Bryant: Look, I’ll take my responsibility. Yeah, I was the governor. I wish I had been able to catch it. The moment I did, I called in the state auditor. Not just for a check. That was just the beginning, but go everywhere.

I never called him & said, “Just look at this & don’t look at anything else.” We’re going to find that bill where we put an independent auditor in there.

But yeah, I’ll take responsibility if we’ll also recognize the good things that happened in this state while I was governor & the hard work we put into it. Debra & I worked 12, 15 hours. No, you don’t want to say that. We were thankful to be able to do it. But Joey (Songy, former chief of staff, current business partner) will tell you, I mean, we worked 15 hours a day. It wasn’t to try to get rich. It was because we cared about the people in the state of Mississippi, & we wanted them to do better.

Did we, did I miss some things? Absolutely. And could I go back? I would bet, dare to say, that at some point in your organization, somebody would have said, “I wish we would have caught that. We missed that.” Things happen. Bad things happen, good things happen. You can’t control every one of them. You hope & pray.

And I’m a man of Faith, Anna, of strong faith. I don’t go about that using it, but I would do nothing to violate my faith, my strong belief that I have a savior & he’s forgiven me & continues to forgive my sins & my failures. And to throw all of that away over, what, some paper stock? I don’t, I don’t think so. That just wouldn’t happen.

Thank Y’all, gotta go see my grandchildren. They think Papa’s a Pretty Good Guy.

Just because you claim to work 12 to 15 hours a day doesn't mean you're a good person.

"And to throw all of that away over, what, some paper stock?"

That's a dead giveaway. The "I couldn't possibly have done that because it's irrational" defense just screams "guilty." Greed isn't rational. It leads even smart people to do stupid things.

Also, as someone who has worked 12-15 hour days, I seriously doubt Phil did it for 8 years.

After knowing Phil and Deb for many years, none of this surprises me. Neither one of them could pass sophomore math classes, now, years later.

Phil and Deb wrapped themselves in "Jesus" and are both hollow people. After being elected to statewide office, they were surrounded by "yes" people and sycophants. One of the problems is that they are so dumb that they actually thought they were "doing good" by "working 15 hours a day."

With their dim wits, they could have worked 30 hours a day and it would have only made things worse.

Prevacus was a sad excuse for a company. Perfect set-up for brain injured people like Favre and PB to be swayed. And then to be crooked and look for cash.

One more corrupt politician. I hope Phil and Deb don't end up in jail. I just want them to go away and see any stupid building named after them (isn't there on at UMMC?) to be named after someone honorable.

You nailed it. Phil was the most vindictive politicians I have ever known. He was ruthless in punishing anyone who oppposed him. Dumb as a rock and thought he was the sharpest knife in the drawer. This story doesn't surprise me. While he probably won't be held accountable, there is no doubt he knew what was going on with John Davis and Nancy New. Nobody is that stupid. After reading the 3hour interview he gave to Anne Wolfe, I realize he is dumber than I thought.

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.
