Am I the only one who noticed that our esteemed State Legislature raked about $778,000,000.00 of the American Rescue Plan’s $1.5 Billion (roughly half) off the table to be disbursed among small cities and counties across Mississippi? That is money that ostensibly would be used, as in other states, to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure.
If y’all believe that extended session was spent in honest debate about our poor state’s needs then all I can say is naïveté can be expensive. I am so ashamed right now.

But the size of the increases are terrible optics. OUTRAGEOUS to give a 67% increase. With each passing day the MSGOP acts more and more like Democrats.

Honestly, the low salaries might be why MS has trouble finding qualified people to run for office. I had no idea they were that low. A (competent) person could make $500k/yr+bonus running a multi-billion dollar company. Why would one leave a private sector career like that in order to make half the pay and be ridiculed every decision?

These are very reasonable salaries. In fact, I think they are all really low.

Most on these folks could make much more in the private sector, hell most of my rankin county officials make more than Statewides.

More over, in THIS State, these salaries are very good as the " private" sector comparable positions aren't held by Mississippians.

half million dollar salaries plus bonus and multi- billion dollar companies in mississippi are about as common as virgins in a cathouse.

Let me remember. I got a 4 or 5% raise in my SS check. That was the largest I have ever gotten. Sure wish I could do like politicians and give myself a 60% raise. But unlike them, I am not able to give myself a raise.

Why is the Insurance Commissioner getting a 67% raise? Why does the Insurance Commission make almost twice the Lt. Governor? That is the office raise that really stands out.

For the uninformed, the Lt Governor and the Speaker are both considered to be part-time jobs. True that for the past dozen years, maybe more, the Lt Governor has not treated it as such but rather worked full-time and held no other outside employment. The Speaker still practices law supposedly although not sure how much time he actually spends there lately. (Little known is that the Ag Commissioner for some strange reason also is denoted a part-time position, allowing our current commissioner to practice law in addition to wearing his white hat at the rodeo.)

I don't know why KF would suggest we ought to read these and weep. Yes, they are big percentage raises but percentages are based on the starting point. Anyone that can suggest that in today's economy the state's legal officer should draw a salary of $112k or that the other statewide officials salary should be $90k are doing nothing but bitching. And Governor $122,000? Moving in 2024 to $160,000? What do you think someone with the overall responsibility to run a multi-billion dollar operation should be paid?

Yes, it could and should be argued that we don't need three transportation commissioners or three public service commissioners. But if you aren't willing to accept that those positions should be eliminated what do you expect to get for $78,000?

Yes, you can get good people to run for these jobs that aren't doing it for the money because they have passed that stage of their life. Commissioner Chaney was retired from a successful business career before his election. Treasurer McRae certainly didn't offer himself for this position due to the enticing $90,000/year or want to keep it now because it will move to $120,000. Lt Gov Hosemann's part-time salary of $60,000 or his previous SOS salary of $90,000 wasn't the driving force for him to leave a very lucrative law partnership.

But forgotten him KF's 'read em and weep' comment is that along with these raises attempting to bring these elected officials' salaries somewhat in line with our neighbors is the move by the State Personnel Board (SEC squared) that has and will provide significantly large pay raise adjustments throughout state agencies. There are many state employees that are receiving this year raises that equal or surpass the percentage raises of these elected officials. Also, lower level elected officials received pay raises as well - District Attorneys, Supervisors, Judges, all received pay raises this year on top of the raises they received over the past dozen years while these statewide elected officials salaries have been set in stone.

Judges salaries have taken large jumps three times during the last decade (allowing of course for judge's staffs to be increased). Appropriate raises that should have been done and as allowed by a legislative action in 2012. Check them out while you 'read 'em and weep' over this action. Our 19 appellate judges all make 25% to 40% more than the Governor today and did so before receiving another raise this year. Hell, the Circuit and Chancery Judges spread throughout the state make more than the Governor and other statewide officials.

Lets not forget our favorite - school board superintendents throughout the state exceed these salaries as well. Forget the State Superintendent's ridiculous figure, but get the ones scattered throughout our 82 counties, including the one that doesn't even have a school. Are they worth more in value than the Governor, or the Attorney General?

Seems fair enough, although the auditor’s raise is a little perplexing. In general, this means MS’s highest elected officials will be paid about like career middle managers in the federal government. Hard to say that’s overpaid. A good candidate will still be taking a substantial pay cut versus what they can make in the private sector, but if you want qualified people to run for office, you can’t make the lifestyle hit too painful.

Meanwhile regular state, county employees will continue to be paid in peanuts and promises and they will continue to have to work two or three jobs. LouAnne's folks without the title of Dr. or Nurse make less than teenage burger flippers who spit in your food. Enjoy the raise boys and girls and by all means earn it. They gave THEMSELVES a cost of living raise and left the help to be eaten by inflation.

Nah, they are acting like typical white conservatives (the MSGOP) because at least the Democrats would have given pay raises to state workers first, before giving themselves a raise.
