Ruined?

The Landmark building in downtown Jackson flooded last week.   Well, to say it flooded is an understatement.  Watch the video posted below.

The Street Committee says pipes burst on the fifth floor during the ice storm last week.  Unfortunately, the heat was not turned on during the winter.  Water flowed for several days before it was turned off.  As seen in the video, water completely covered the first floor and poured out the front door.

Kingfish note: Because it's the Landmark, it gives me an excuse to post this video.

Where is Kenneth Stokes when you need him?

Well, at least someone in Jacktown has water. Maybe this is the "progress" to which Mayor Bloviator was referring.

Looks like a scene from Titanic. Very fitting and symbolic for Jackson.

So sad. Many wonderful memories from there when it was the "Landmark Center". Bellsouth had the entire building at one time. So many good jobs and people. All gone forever.

Hasnt that building been on the market since 2013?

WLBT:

Aging pipes aside, Lumumba said infrastructure in Jackson and other “legacy” cities was not built to handle the effects of climate change.

He said Jackson’s water system, for instance, was designed to handle a warmer, drier climate. However, climate change has led to colder winters, hotter summers, and more rainy seasons.

ABSOLUTE BULLSHIT.

Worse yet, there apparently isn't even a single person in the WLBT newsroom who possesses even the most basic intelligence to challenge Antard on his outrageous claims.

Total unadulterated BULLSHIT. Shame, shame on you WLBT.

If the building was empty, no one thought to turn off the water?

8:50 Lumumba is so full of it. Climate change and colder winters my ass. Yes we had a very frigid snap this year, but it was mild at best. Our winters are in a very mild stage. Ducks don't migrate like they used to. Lumumba doesn't know shit from shinola. He's all about the buzzwords the progressives like to use. I can guarantee that the winters were historically colder than the last 15 years.

Your scientific analysis is breathtaking

I seem to remember a lot of buzz a couple of years ago about this building being renovated by an out-of-state developer as mixed-use with a grocery store. What happened to all of that?

Anonymous said...

If 8:50's post is correct, then the CL, Ms Today, WLBT, WAPT, WJTV, FOx-40 and MPR are completely and totally negligent and irresponsible for not ridiculing the Mayor and holding him responsible for perpetrating such deceit.

I know it's probably closing the barn door after the horses have bolted, but...there are so many vacant and semi-vacant but usable buildings in downtown that need to be monitored so that they don't get vandalized or burned or something like this. Look at the King Edward which was brought back to life only because it survived those vacant years. The city should have a real interest in keeping those buildings viable even though they are vacant especially during the winter months. An organization like Downtown Partners should be given the authority to monitor those buildings daily so that stuff like this doesn't get out of hand. It's a damn shame when you consider the unnecessary cost that was just incurred.

guess we know where all the water went in Jackson.

Y'all forget so quickly that the Prophet Ben Allen and Senator David 'Gerrymander' Blount were pushing to put the state on the hook for that relic (via UMC purchase) back in 2014.

Is it CID Day yet in Belhaven? I know y'all can't wait to pay more to receive less!!! Another big huge win by Senator Gerrymander Blount!

9:33--right! wanted to put the tax commission there. it's in Clinton--which didnt lose water. and mostly didnt lose power either..

The people and businesses stupid enough to remain in that shit hole are enablers at this point.

Ironically the bid date for the renovation of this building was on Friday 2/12. At least that’s when the contractor out of Missouri wanted pricing by.

@9:13
Followed link B Crap provided to WLBT's page.
Reported there about 3/4ths down the story.
Is somebody telling him these falsehoods?
Is he making it all up?
Both?

5th floor pipes have nothing to do with the city infrastructure. That's just piss poor management. As recently as last year, there was at least one real business in that place.

Anonymous said...

It was under renovation.

Like the manhole cover on Ridgewood, I bet plenty of JPD and Public Works drove by and said, "Meh" when they saw water pouring out the building.

Anonymous said...

Drove by there several times last week. Water was pouring down the front of the building from at least sometime Wednesday to sometime Friday. Made a nice waterfall.

If insured, that claim is going to be a doozy!

That's the job of pundits, investigative journalists and OpEds. Your standard journalist is just to report what was said.

Anonymous said...

has anyone turned the water off yet?

Anonymous said...

If the building is insured, the claim will likely be denied. Most insurance policies say that water damage from burst pipes is not covered if the building has been vacant for over 30 days, unless the water is shut off at the meter, and the system has been drained.

If Jackson voters dont clean house in the so called leadership, you might as well hang a closed for business sign.Pitiful.

Kingfish, feel free to post Blues Brothers videos anytime. Underappreciated classic.

Jackson's very own water-front hotel with an indoor pool. Great for conventions and tourists.

Sadly this is 100% likely

@923

Pretty sure that the building was listed and managed by a property management company, and a real estate broker may also have had it listed at the time. So Downtown Partners aren't needed there -- it was just an oversight or screw up by the broker or company managing it. BTW, does Downtown Partners work for free, or do they expect to be paid like everyone else?

Anonymous said...

@9:12 I think she bought the Mecrocenter instead

Anonymous said...

The entire building will likely have to be gutted to the concrete walls and floors due to moisture now and mold soon after. It could be a blessing if the insurance covers it.

" So sad. Many wonderful memories from there when it was the "Landmark Center". Bellsouth had the entire building at one time. So many good jobs and people. All gone forever."

That's an understatement.

I remember when that building opened.
I worked on Capitol Street back then and ate lunch there often.

But in that era, one was still be proud to be a Jacksonian.

Also, most policies deny coverage if heat isn’t maintained in the building.

Ah, February 25, 2021 at 9:00 AM - Ducks migrate for one reason. FOOD. They don't seek a warmer climate. They seek food.

Anonymous said...

Since they didn’t have funds to complete the project I guess flooding the building was a good way to get from under the debt. Sounds suspicious possible insurance fraud.

Follow the money.

Anonymous said...

@6:14 the building has not been vacant in years. There’s some really nice offices on the top floor that are in use right now. Fuse.Cloud is one tenant.
To everyone else, how does it benefit you, or anyone, to say horrible things about Jackson? It only indicates that you are insecure with your choices surrounding where you live, and to validate those feelings, you must put down where you “don’t live/left.”
When you say a bad thing about a city, a person, or anything else, you are showing your character.
I love madison, jackson, Brandon, Clinton, and the rest of the metro area. I understand you not feeling safe in jackson and identifying it’s problems. They are obvious! But to take the time to criticize and be hurtful only ultimately reveals how small you are.
If you live in the state of Mississippi, it is in your best interest to wish the best for Jackson.

Anonymous said...

I guess the Mayor and WLBT slept through class the day they covered the French and Indian War and the whole mini ice age thing.

Anonymous said...

@9:00 I understand your sentiment and your hurt feelings, but how does it benefit Jackson for us to NOT speak up about the horrible things that happen? The bad things are still going to occur since nothing has changed...so you prefer blissful ignorance?

I saw many bash Coach Sanders online for having the audacity to speak up about theft. Like he broke some code and you are not supposed to tell others about the bad things that happen in Jxn. They literally want to keep it secret and made him the bad guy, rather than the thief.

Maybe you have it wrong.

Maybe if MORE people spoke up and about the problems, JXN would seek out and vote for leaders who will make he hard choices with the remaining limited tax base monies?

I honestly doubt it, but this desire to keep the crime and failing infrastructure a secret befuddle me in the plan to improve Jackson. But I hope it works out.

Kingfish said...

The building was going to require millions in technology upgrades.

Anonymous said...

Stokes expressing same sentiment as you are 8:58. Saying if the Mayor was white and vast swaths of black neighborhoods were without water for days on end there would be marching and protests in the streets.

Anonymous said...

You weren't supposed to tell that dirty little secret Kingfish.

Anonymous said...

I thought Jackson had electronic monitoring of water usage. Is the Fire Department responsible for shutting off flooded building?

@8:58 a.m.

You stated the truth so clearly and succinctly. BRAVO!

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
