No one will go to prison for the murder of Chelsie Kirschten. Let that sink in for a moment. Read it again: No one will go to prison for the murder of Chelsie Kirschten. Three suspects yet all three beat the Capital Murder rap.
The last suspect pleaded guilty today to conspiracy to commit attempted armed robbery. Circuit Judge Winston Kidd sentenced Jushun Paige to serve five years in prison but he will probably be back on the street long before the sentence expires.
23 year-old Chelsie Kirschten was brutally gunned down at the intersection of Fortification and North State Streets on August 17, 2017. JPD arrested Nicholas Coats, Lidarious Dixon, and Jushun Paige for Kirschten's murder and trying to rob the passenger in her car. JPD reported:
During the course of the investigation, it was learned that the victim and a front seat passenger were stationary at the intersection of Fortification St. near State St. waiting for the traffic signal to change, when an unidentified black male subject approached the vehicle from the driver side armed with a silver handgun. The suspect, wearing dark colored clothing, fired a single gunshot through the front driver side window of the vehicle striking the victim (in the upper back) and he fled on foot. The vehicle continued to travel eastbound on Fortification St. and came to a final rest near the interstate. The motive for the shooting has not been determined at this time. The grand jury indicted Coats, Lidarius Dixon, and Jushun Paige for capital murder, armed robbery, and conspiracy to commit armed robbery. Coats admitted to driving the other suspects to the scene of the murder. Coats pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on December 6, 2018. Circuit Judge Jeff Weill sentenced that poor schmuck to serve forty years in prison but suspended ten years of the sentence. Schmuck because his compadres in crime are undoubtedly laughing at him right now as they enjoy their good fortune at the hands of the Hinds County criminal justice system.
A jury found Dixon not guilty of Capital Murder at his August 2019 trial although it convicted him him of conspiracy to commit attempted armed robbery of the passenger in Kirschten's car. Judge Adrienne Wooten sentenced him to serve five years in prison but gave him credit for time served. Dixon was paroled in January.
The acquittal of Dixon threw a monkey wrench into the prosecution's plans as he was the accused shooter. It didn't help that Coats identified Dixon as the shooter while Dixon identified Paige. Thus, prosecutors remanded the capital murder indictment against Paige.
Paige pleaded guilty to conspiracy today. Judge Kidd sentenced him to serve five years in prison but gave him credit for time served. Paige has been in jail since October 24, 2017. It is a safe bet that Paige will be back on the street within six months if Dixon's treatment by the Parole Board is any indication.
Kingfish note: This case is past disgusting. Three thugs (yes, thugs) walk up to a car at a major intersection and shoot to death a young woman. What took place in the Hinds County criminal justice system was a crime.
The previous District Attorney once again dragged his feet obtaining indictments so Judge Tomie Green started turning the defendants loose. The D.A. finally got the desired indictments but not before the family went through more hell.
But wait, there is more. Red Paige was convicted of carjacking. He was released from prison just a month before the murder of young Chelsie. He had 7 years remaining on a suspended sentence. MDOC finally got around to submitting a petition to revoke his probation but did so after the deadline. The petition collected dust on Judge Green's desk.
So thanks to an incompetent District Attorney, criminal-friendly judges, and a dysfunctional criminal justice system, the killer of Chelsie Kirschten will never serve a day for her murder.

It's technically not for "murder" but won't Paige be serving at least several months of the 5 year sentence that was imposed today?
Still, though, this kind of punishment is not proportionate to the actual crime committed.
Those charges are for crimes against the passenger.
This problem unfortunately isn’t isolated to Jackson. Man shot to death in other Mississippi “county A”. Perpetrator sentenced to maximum with all suspended and credit for time served in county lockup awaiting bond to post. Victim’s family lectured from the bench by self-righteous judge. Victim’s family never advised to register with state. Perpetrator commits probation-ending felony in adjacent “county B”. County A and and County B don’t know who’s on first. Unregistered survivors never notified of the second felony and therefore not afforded their right under Crime Victims Bill of Rights to speak at sentencing for the second felony. Perpetrator serves no time for second felony and does not have probation for first felony revoked. Surviving victims told registering with the state wouldn’t have mattered anyway because perpetrator never spent a single day in true state custody post-conviction for either felony. Nice. I pray for this victim’s family and for the survivor. The victims rights system is broken.
Whats also disgusting is people like Grant Callen and Russ Latino are trying to brainwash everyone into thinking its “conservative “ to let more people out of prison.
If there is one ounce of consolation, there really is something to the concept many refer to as
"Karma".
Man is an inferior product. Understanding this we create a system of which order within the community is maintained. Has worked for thousands of years. You fuck up amongst the tribe, there’s retribution. Why, now is it unexceptionable?
While it is no immediate comfort to this girl's family, karma can be both a loving mother and a real bitch and thugs like those involved with this don't lend themselves to much of the loving mother aspect. I suspect that what these three see as yet another notch in their successful criminal "career" will sooner rather than lead them to an autopsy slab, gunned down by another "success story" (who will also wind up similarly-situated). Some folks conduct themselves in such a way to wind up as "the deceased" in a homicide report. May I present exhibits A, B, and C.
The "system" is set up by lawyers for lawyers. The victims and perpetrators are just part of the scenery. What counts is the agenda of the lawyers. In Hinds County the agenda of the current crop is to get rich from the "defense" side.
Where is Donna Ladd on this?
*crickets*
She’s supposed to be an advocate against violence against women.
Oh yeah, I forgot, it’s a black on white crime.
Bunch of Jackson racists.
Has it ever been established if this was random or if the poor kids knew the assailants?
DA and judges want “us” out of Hinds County. Ok, I concede.
Signed,
Taxpayer
He'll kill again. You can bank on it.
It's easy to see this wasn't random. Anyone with reasoning skills can deduce they were targeted. But if you even hint at why, don't expect to see your comment.
Paging US attorney, Mike Hurst. Step up, charge the accused with violating the young girl’s civil rights and put em jail. If their races were all opposite, pretty good odds the feds would step in and prosecute 3 white guys for shooting and killing a black girl. Fair is fair.
Also fair to say, the mayor wouldn’t be so quiet if it was black girl killed by three whiteys who got away with it.
There's "white privilege, and then there is the other one, exclusive to Jacktown.
White lives don't matter.
UNFUCKINGBELIEVEABLE
The criminal justice system in Hinds County is worse than a joke...seriously, does anyone get vigorously prosecuted or punished for anything? The US Department of Justice needs to look into this...where is the advocacy for victims?
So glad I moved my business and family out of that shit hole.
Whoever pulled the trigger should've been sentenced to death. That we don't have that outcome is a crime against humanity. I remember reading this initial story back when it happened and crying at the thought of that poor girl bleeding out in her car as she drove down Fortification, the life rapidly leaving her body. What an absolutely horrible result all the way around.
Why isn't this National news? I think I'll start a "Movement" called "Don't Stop in Jackson". Sign it up with the Secretary of State. Put up billboards before the city limits. You know damn well Frank Melton would have had these 3 on a damn billboard. DSiJ.org come on we can do this.
It's Jackson, Mississippi. No lives matter is their motto. Black lives don't matter, white lives don't matter, and the people show every election they like it that way.
Stay out of a Jackson. It is full of racist killers and the city government does not care. Payback I guess.
What’s worse than a lawyer? A prosecutor.
Let's see if I get this story, all of it, straight.
The guy that drove the car got sentenced to 30 years in jail (40 - 10) by the one white Judge in Hinds County.
He didn't pull the trigger, he didn't do the killing.
The second guy got out in less than 3 years with none of them served in the big house.
The third guy got off with basically the same.
Either the second or the third thug pulled the trigger and killed this girl, but they were both black thugs in front of a black judge with a black prosecutor.
But of course there is no racism here. The killers got off due to the combination of the inept prosecutor and the inept Judge.
I guess the problem with the criminal justice system in Hinds County is that we had a white Judge for a while and he imposed a strict sentence on the least of the thugs.
BLM - only BLM in Jackson.
Maybe I can’t comprehend but “ Coats pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on December 6, 2018” somehow led me to believe that he will serve time for the murder.
“A jury found Dixon not guilty of Capital Murder...”
Again, correct me if I’m wrong but it seems like the JURY was the problem against obtaining a murder conviction against Dixon.
So the owner of this thing is super pissed ....
Because a white girl was killed and prosecutors cannot make the case.....
Let’s see his outrage the next time a black girl is killed and prosecutors can’t get the facts they need to make their case.....
This site is a dangerous caldron of hate
One day (probably soon), the inequities delivered by the justice system will be handled in a different manner. The guilty parties will receive their just punishment in the same environment in which they committed their indiscretions.
Yes, it will be outside of the law, but it will be done as a direct failure of the legal system. We will not allow this to continue.
So which one shot her? If that answer can’t be given beyond a reasonable doubt, then the system worked like it was designed to hundreds of years ago.
@2:34 am
At least this "hate" is contained to a blog, unlike the hate we have witnessed over the past couple of months based upon false narratives about law enforcement in this country.

While your comment is a sterling example of ignorance.

And what's worse than a Prosecutor? A District Attorney who won't file charges on time.
1. How can you say "No one will go to prison" when Coats will be in prison until 2047?
2. Sounds like the prosecution didn't prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Dixon pulled the trigger. It happens. Maybe it's incompetence, maybe the jury was unreasonable, maybe there just wasn't enough evidence. That's how the system works. I don't see how the judge is to blame.
You can call racism, hate whatever you wish but the facts remain this is not right. Everyone who didnt do their job look at that picture you failed her and her family. This Murder and yes its Murder is just as bad and wrong as the Murder in Minnesota. Shame
These travesties are so standard that the depth and reach of the Jackson crime junta can be gauged.
2:34
You're entitled to your opinion, that's what makes America (usually) great.
I'm not a mind reader, but I'm pretty certain most if not all the people on here would be pissed if it was a black girl as well.
White people in Jackson are fed up with all this violence that results in a slap on the wrist, sewage issues, etc. while paying the highest property taxes in the state, dealing with a Mayor who (and/or whose father) believes in the southeast being a country just for black people; yet a Mayor who probably wants to shun the fact there are a lot of white people wandering around that descend from Union soldiers and there are even WW2 veterans still in our mist. If the Mayor believes in crap as the most important issue then he can just get his butt on a plane to Venezuela and live that radical, socialist life there.
2:34, Many Jacksonians want peace and no water issues, and to not fall decades behind our I-20 mates Atlanta, Birmingham, and Dallas.
Also, Red was in the big crime spree from a half dozen years ago, wasn't he?
Whatever happened to the one guy's public defender that taunted the victims mother at the Project Eject event?
Whats worse that a defense lawyer and prosecutor???? Frickin racist Hinds county circuit judges that will not do the jobs they're elected to do and for that very reason they will continue to be elected.
Are the Mayor and Virgi going to tell the people of Belhaven why a murder went practically unpunished at N State and Fortification, a guy only get 8 years for killing a man on High St, and a guy almost get easy bond for robbing a lady with a gun at Jefferson and Poplar?
No idea why East Jackson hasn't become its own city.
More importantly, pray for the families.
It was a random act, They will have to met their maker one day and face the true consequences. I hope the law and judges also have to face this that was involved with letting them walk.
2:34 - JJ regularly posts about shooting deaths of black victims on here. Are there racist commenters on here, sure. But don’t spin this into yet another front in the culture wars. We should all want killers to be punished. Seems like that’s a little sliver of common ground we could all meet on.
Guess you missed all my coverage of little Kingston Frazier. or Potts. or that poor Grandmother that was murdered in South Jackson. Notice I keep bringing an update on her case every so often? Why do you think that is? Want more examples?
"So which one shot her? If that answer can’t be given beyond a reasonable doubt, then the system worked like it was designed to hundreds of years ago."
Simple - we need FEDERAL charges against all three of them for violating her civil rights - no need to prove which one pulled the trigger, and they can all serve federal sentences without violating double jeopardy.
Of course, the question must be asked why the D.A. didn't pursue them on felony murder when getting indictments.
11:13: is there evidence of racial motivation or other civil rights violation here? The perpetrator and victim simply being of a different race ain't gonna cut it, no matter what your Facebook legal expert friends tell you.

I want to ask as serious, albeit rhetorical, question. Where is the outrage from the black community, period? The only outrage that appears is racially motivated and IS NOT considerate of black on black violent crimes.
There is some very real need for hate in our black communities. We need to hate on those that continue to feed on this racial notion and quit harming ourselves.
You can’t just say false things like “no one will go to prison for murder,” but you’re now putting your knowingly false statements in bold font?
Academic honesty used to be a thing...
9:19 AM
According to his Linkedin he's still an assistant Public Defender at the Hinds County Public Defender's Office.
How is it false? No one is going to prison for actually killing her.
Coats is currently in prison for murder. That it is not to the degree of your liking doesn’t mean you can just say no one went to prison for murder. They, in fact, did.
Again, Dixon was not convicted of attempted armed robbery. Another falsity you continue to publish.
Look at page 5 of Dixon's sentencing documents. THat is where I am getting that statement from.
"Look at page 5 of Dixon's sentencing documents. THat is where I am getting that statement from."
Your initial post contains, "Coats pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on December 6, 2018. Circuit Judge Jeff Weill sentenced that poor schmuck to serve forty years in prison but suspended ten years of the sentence." Presumably, that was for his role in the murder of the young girl, no? While it is apparently true that Dixon didn't get sentenced for the murder, Coats apparently did. If so, "someone" - Coats - is going to prison for it. I would agree that all three should have gotten at least the 30 years, but that's another topic.
Someone please refresh my memory. What evidence was used to identify these 3 perps? Was the weapon ever found? Was it tied to one of the three thru purchase records? Any physical evidence - blood, gunshot residue?
The DA is lucky they got the sentences they did.
Like Mick in Sudden Impact, "it's a freebie". Except Nick was White.
@PittPanther
The same evidence they always secretly use. IMEI ping data and/or Google location telemetry.
It's called parallel conatruction. They take it to a judge who gives them a warrant or subpoena for what they already have or know.
"The DA is lucky they got the sentences they did."
I've never been a criminal defense attorney or a prosecutor, but I'd imagine if you have at least one guilty plea and three dudes (apparently all with criminal records) willing to roll on each other on a murder committed while trying to commit a carjacking or armed robbery, it would seem at least two of the Defendants are the ones who got "lucky" (and even the one that got 30 years was lucky he didn't get life without parole or the DP).
Bullshit. Coats was the driver but the actual killers are NOT going to prison for killing her.
As stated earlier, RSS totally screwed up the case by not going for the felony murder.
Another reason why so many people were relieved he couldn't get his mitts on the Kingston Frazier case.
@5:24: ...and justice came to ole Nick. Epic movie!
Basic white girls are a diamond dozen Jackson. Why are you so obsessed with this one?
A says B was the shooter.
B says C was the shooter.
C says A was the shooter.
C also plead guilty to being the driver.
There's no other evidence, only 3 conflicting stories. What do you expect a jury to do? Guess? Guessing is not the standard we're supposed to follow.
Kingfish, what the hell are you talking about the felony murder rule for? All three where charged with murder. Since only one was the actual shooter, the others were felony murder by definition. Felony murder is a legal theory, not a charge.
@5:09. There apparently was no evidence. That’s why Dixon was acquitted and Paige walked on a plea. That’s what happens when the state doesn’t have enough evidence on a person. They get acquitted. I understand that this is a concept beyond most of these commenters comprehension, but hey, I guess it’s just easier to blame “Jackson”
Kingfish, cite one single thing as evidence that Dixon or Paige were the “actual killers” besides the word of the only guy who actually went down for murder. One thing.
Evidence aside, what was Red doing out of prison in the first place?
Justice has a way of coming around.
