The MO makes it sound pretty targeted. However, I have certainly been at that intersection around midnight and I don't do drugs or hang out in West Jackson. Off the top of my head, I have been leaving the hospital, leaving Fenian's, & running to the pharmacy for necessary meds.

It don't matter what she was doing or why no one deserves to be killed no matter what the situation was.

23 year old people ARE allowed to be out at 11:45 pm. The car was waiting for the light to change and the driver was ASSASSINATED. At this point it appears the ONLY motive is because she was "driving while white" in the city of Jackson.

Ask yourself the following: If an identified WHITE male had laid in wait, hiding in the shadows, until a car with a young, attractive, BLACK FEMALE had pulled up to a traffic light, then he crept up and shot her dead like the Son of Sam, what would be the response in this city?

Would there be marches, protests, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Maxine Waters, screams for Trump to be impeached? How quickly would the city statutes be pulled down? Would the name of the town have to be changed? Would our city be the next to turn into Ferguson, MO?

Then ask yourself how long it's going to take to catch this criminal, and what will happen to him when he gets arrested (IF he gets arrested at all). How lengthy is his criminal "rap sheet" going to be? How many times will the city of Jackson and the State of MS let him out of jail? How quickly will the ACLU and others rush to his defense and claim he didn't know what he was doing, or his IQ was too low, or was "temporarily insane" because of the state flag??

Was this racially motivated? Was this a hate crime?

This was definitely not a planned hit. There's no way anyone could have known she would be stopped at that stoplight at that time. This black man just wanted to kill a white person. It's required for several of the social clubs in Jackson.

Possibly one of the numerous mentally ill or homeless individuals that constantly roams the Fondren-Belhaven State Street corridor. They like to hang out around the gas station across the street from Baptist or around Walgreens. Or just one more Jackson resident with a hatred of whitey and a long rap sheet.

Generally speaking, very few shootings are random. Nearly all of them are targeted. This likely wasn't random.

It's now called Ole Tavern. Thursday night is ladies night, and it is a very busy night, especially now that school is back in. I drove by the scene as the very first officer was arriving. I saw a hole in the driver's window and thought at the time that it could be from a bullet. The car was haphazardly half way up on the curb. I uturned in the Cazuela lot and went back by. They were sitting the passenger from the Pontiac in the back of a patrol car (not in handcuffs). She was also young, cute, and dressed to go out. I knew something serious was going on when they blocked fortification and the crime scene unit showed up.

Has the Mayor made a statement?

If he is compelled to issue a statement on Charlottesville then he should consider issuing a statement on this, although he should wait until more facts are known such as confirmation there wasn't other criminal activity involved that resulted in the murder. If it was random and the victim was in Jackson for legal entertainment purposes and was randomly targeted, whether for car jacking or simply to be murdered, then yeah, he needs to make a statement, a strong statement supporting law enforcement and the elimination of this kind of crime.

There are so many homeless and vagrants that hang out in that area. Yesterday morning on Fortification near Pizza Shack there was what appeared to be a homeless woman standing in the middle of the road yelling at another homeless man who was on the sidewalk. The woman in the road proceeded to walk down the double yellow lines of Fortification like it wasn't a busy street and she owned it. I was a little nervous stopping at the State Street light as she appeared to be angry, mentally ill, or both.

This girl died, it is terribly sad, her parents are grieving as is her entire family, the girl in the car with her, will be traumatized for the remainder of her life ......a BLACK man did it.......it is not racist to point this out, and also to point out that in our city now, and in our nation, if the reverse were true, we'd be dealing with the national spotlight. Those are the facts, because we have seen it play out over and over, with violent reactions from the left (Ferguson, et. al.).

Just another day in Crackson. Everyone is a potential target. Extra points if it's whitey, I guess. Who the hell knows anymore. If you don't live there, don't get caught in that area after dark---black OR white.. The "safe places" are no longer safe anymore.

This has nothing to do with neo-nazi's, Antar, #45, etc. This is a longtime problem in Jackson that's simply getting worse. People always think, "it won't happen to me" but it very well could. You're talking about a place that's a nationally known criminal-gang hideout/safe spot. Strength in numbers and the judicial system has long since been captured.

Thousands of people drive in Jackson after dark, every night, in all areas, and nothing happens. Stop victim-blaming. You're far more likely to die by other means.

That JATRAN bus stop shelter at the corner of Fortification and State is a hangout for all sorts of bums, transients, panhandlers, and just plain crazy folks - loitering, littering, sleeping on the bench, peeing in cups. It's disturbing and disgusting. I've called JPD and JATRAN on several occasions, but there's been no real effort to police that place by either entity. It's become a public nuisance, frankly.

Her brother-in-law is a Madison Police Officer so hopefully JPD won't screw up this investigation knowing another agency is watching them.

If a person can read they know the crime stats of Jackson. Even the fuzzy math of the police dept. cannot hide that. It also does nothing to change who is committing the crimes and how many crimes they have to commit before some judge will put them in prison.

Why would she be shot in the back? I can imagine that is a very small target from the driver's side if he were approaching from the side.

Individuals who have ambushed people in the driver's seat have come from the blind spot, slightly behind the driver. If she was short in stature, her seat was likely forward, exposing her back to the angle of shot

Random shootings are extremely rare, something does not sound right on this.

It's very possible that the shooter was going to rob or carjack the 2 females at the light. If that's the case, the gun going off was probably not intentional. There ia nothing to gain financially from just shooting someone and running off. I hope they find the shooter and figure out a way to prosecute that person in either Madison or Ridgeland...

I pray that Jackson calls in MS Bureau of Investigation (MBI) to lead this investigation!!!!!! This would do two things, A) It would give them someone else to blame and B) is a moot issue because MBI will catch this guy!!!

What did she do? She had to be doing something wrong. Let's not jump to conclusions until we know all of the facts. I'm on that street all of the time at that time of night and nothing ever happens to me. She had to provoke this somehow.

Somebody above says he 'came up on the scene' as the first officer arrived. Yet other reports say the victim's car made it all the way to interstate 55, some five or six blocks to the east. I doubt she was able to drive; however, if she was, why would the passenger not mandate that she drive to Baptist Hospital. And how could the 'scene man' arrive at the scene of the shooting and see the bullet hole in the window of the car when the car was five to six blocks east of the scene?

This story is becoming as convoluted as the Kroger shooting with the six year old. And it will get no more attention from The Mayor than the Motel 6 murder of the Bass Tournament Participant got from the other Mayor Lumumba. The tournament went ahead as scheduled without one damned word from the mayor or his police chief.

I did not realize homeless, mentally ill carried large silver handguns. I hope the 'person in the passenger seat' has an attorney before JPD detectives get to far along with their 'questioning'.

She was shot at N State Street and Fortification. Shooter is on left. She is probably thinking just get out of there. Total panic. Then she'd expires while driving down Fortification. You r expecting a dying person suffering from trauma to think rationally.

North Tavern is ladies night and is popular with that age group. Come down Congress, take right on Fortification. This is not hard.

The key to solving this murder is the other person in the car. That person has to be 100% truthful with the police. Where were you at, where were you going and what were you doing there.

11:31 - To continue with your visions, the perp with the silver handgun was in the car the whole time, there was a violent argument over drugs, they stopped at the light, words were exchanged, he got out, he pulled his gun, racked it and shot her. Then he ran off. At the end of the day, it's still murder.

@3:01, I had an inkling there was more to this than meets the eye. I feel terrible for the family. With her brother saying that she was trying to turn her life around that's a huge issue. Drugs have ruined far too many people's lives and it's hard for addicts to ever overcome their addictions.

Hopefully, the passenger will tell all and the killer will be captured. But, there is one problem. It was a black male who shot a white female in Hinds county over drugs. RSS will NEVER allow him to be prosecuted to the fullest extent. A majority black jury will never allow it either in Hinds county. This smells to High Heaven.

I am sure he will be well coached by the current D.A. if brought to trial.
He wants no black man in jail if he can help it.

TOTALLY agree! When I heard him state this, I said hmmm. Alright, so there definitely could be MORE to this! Folks, no one deserves to be shot down like this, but there is MORE to this! This is NOT as random as it appears. I agree with an earlier post. That passenger needs to be raked over the coals for info, something about this has to break. People be careful of the life you live! NONE of us are perfect, and I pray for this young lady and her family, but these streets ain't no joke! They never have been! I just feel so bad for the family! 😭

You last few posters really take the cake with your idle, pious speculation about drugs and whatnot, and all based on a passing comment by the victim's brother. She was going back to college, for God's sake - think that might be what he meant about turning one's life around? Drove through this intersection a few days ago. Traffic cams on each of the 4 street posts where the traffic lights are hung. Hopefully they were operational...

Sir, or Madame, one doesn't merely start college just to get their life back on track. When a statement like that is made, things are occurring that have one's life OFF track! We're all human, but we're not naive. This is a big problem within society, we don't like the truth. The truth must be palatable, non-offending and soft, even easy. Unfortunately, USUALLY, the truth is anything BUT... Please don't chastise us for making a legitimate point that the victim's brother brought up. This is not heresay, her brother should know. Nonetheless however, I just came back here to correct you and for the record, I'm far from pious. I'm just a realist.

Wow. You guys are lost. White kids come to Jackson ALL THE TIME TO COMMIT CRIMES. This one ended tragically, but it's kinda no surprise. It's all fun and games to go slumming, until someone ends up dead.

The Jackson Police could stop other police departments from chasing people into Jackson if they would only set up roadblocks when a chase is starting, but they would have to get off the cell phone and maybe out of the car then stop the car moving to the "Hole in the Wall hideout for criminals" Go to Jackson and you will get away from prosecution every time. Keep out of Jackson at all costs!! carry a gun, don't stop at traffic lights - if someone approaches your vehicle while at a red light -turn right on red if your not the second vehicle. what is a 13 year old doing out at midnight anyway? the parents should be held accountable if they know who they are.
