Barak Patton will get no more coddling in Hinds County after Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens opened a can of whoop-ass on the little hoodlum. The D.A. got indictments on everything for Patton after his cases collected dust for years.
Patton is the nephew of well-connected Hinds County Constable John Brown. Brown is a public official who makes no bones throwing his weight around or playing politics. Patton has been arrested for shooting people, robbing stores at gunpoint, beating clerks, and possessing stolen firearms with nary a day to face justice. The police repeatedly arrest him only to see the former D.A. and judges work together to keep him out of prison. Whether they do so through incompetence, negligence, or through intentional acts is known only to them.
Police arrested Patton in January for shooting and robbing a man in Clinton. There is no indictment nor an order binding him over to a grand jury. It is as if the arrest never happened. He sat in jail with a high bond until May. Circuit Judge Tomie Green reduced his bond to $10,000 and placed him under house arrest on May 22, 2020. Patton allegedly raped a 14 year-old girl a week later.
District Attorney Jody Owens said enough is enough and successfully got Judge Green to revoke his bond on June 2. Mr. Owens became aware of the earlier arrests, collected their files, and presented them all to the grand jury in July.
The grand jury returned indictments for no less than four separate cases. It is easier to cover each case individually so for the reader's sake, they are posted below in such a fashion.
Forcible Rape
The grand jury indicted Patton for forcible rape and sexual battery of a 14 year-old child. Law enforcement sources said he was allegedly strangling her during the rape. The case is assigned to Judge Adrienne Whooten. The alleged rape took place just a few days after Judge Tomie Green released him from jail.
January 2020 Armed Robbery & Aggravated Assault
The grand jury indicted Patton on July 10 for two armed robberies and aggravated assault that took place on January 1, 2020. The indictment accuses Patton of shooting and robbing Clark Taylor. The case is assigned to Judge Green. Although arrested in January, he was not even bound over to the grand jury.
2018 Clinton Crime Spree
(First Indictment) Patton and his posse (Javien Palmer, Robert Kelly, and Roderick Carter) robbed their way through Clinton convenience stores in early 2018. The grand jury indicted him July 10 for armed robbery and conspiracy. The case is assigned to Circuit Judge William Kidd.
(Second Indictment) The grand jury indicted Patton on July 10 for armed robbery and conspiracy for allegedly robbing two convenience stores at gunpoint in early 2018. The case is assigned to Circuit Judge Adrienne Wooten.
Possession of a Stolen Firearm
The grand jury indicted Patton on May 16, 2018 for possessing a stolen firearm in September 2017. The case is assigned to Judge Green. The case has been continued numerous times. It just sits there.... doing nothing..... doing its best impersonation of a Sopranos no-show.
Aggravated Assault
Patton started his criminal career with a bang - literally. The grand jury indicted him for aggravated assault in May 2018 after he allegedly shot someone in September 2016 (Notice how long it is taking Patton to get indicted on these cases?). The case is assigned to Judge Tomie Green. The case has been repeatedly continued as it collects several inches of dust.
Kingfish note: Some readers will want to blame Judge Green for blessing Patton and make no mistake, she deserves part of the blame. A large part of it. If she had not turned a man loose, a man arrested multiple times for shooting, robbing, and beating others, the young girl would not have suffered this rape. That is something Tomie Green will have to live with on her conscience.
However, much blame goes to former District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith. Several years passed before Patton was indicted in some cases while he wasn't indicted in others. There is no reason why he should not have been indicted by now for the 2018 Clinton crime spree.
This thug is related to a well-known constable and the late Judge Houston Patton. He has been repeatedly caught, blessed, and released only to commit even more savage acts each time. If freed, it will be a safe bet that one day we will read about him committing one, if not more, murder.
Note #2: Blessing? What do we mean by "blessing"?

Jody Owens...lol. Took campaign contributions from George Soros, that's all I need to know.
Judge Green is a joke! She should be removed and her law license revoked. She is one of the problems in Jackson and Hinds county. People will continue to flee out of Jackson as long as nitwits like this are judges.
I’m confused by this too. I thought Soros only funds DA who don’t put criminals behind bars. What am i missing?
You go, Jody. You've got the brains and the guts to make some big changes. This turnaround is particularly welcome.
I'll dream big: with a competent DA, the Judges may be able to improve their performance as well.
Yes, thank you, Jody. Enough is enough.
As did Mississippi 16th Judicial District Attorney Scott Colom. Colom was a former staff member of the Commercial-Dispatchnewspaper and claims to have never heard of
George Soros.
The Mississippi Attorney General should force DA Colom to show the exculpatory evidence that convinced him to release the four defendants charged in the shotgun slaying of
a local gas station attendant. The 4-county-4 were held in the Noxubee county jails for over five years without trial.
Colom claims that cellphone Tower evidence puts the four defendants elsewhere during the murder. In a county that is 90 percent African-American, the victim and the four defendants are caucasian.
You can’t win in Hinds county unless you are liberal. Good for Jody for using Soros money to get elected and still trying to clean up this war zone.
If Jody wants to deal with non-violent offenders through programs or alternatives to sentencing, whatever. Go for it.
But as long as he'll go after thugs like this fearlessly, he's gonna have my and a lot of other people's support.
I'm giving him a chance.
"That is something Tomie Green will have to live with on her conscience."
Joke's oh you. Based upon Judge Green's current and former actions, she lacks a conscience.
My first thought was this is for Barak Patton's protection.
No doubt there are quite a few family and friends of the little 14 year old girl that will probably go beyond medieval on Mister Barak Patton should the find him on the streets.
So what's the story with Robert Shuler Smith?
i thought the new DA was supposed to be soft on crime.
he's looking like hes actually tough on violent crimes...just like he said he would be. and he's a Democrat. my, my, my. its as if the little R or D doesnt really mean that much...
i'm fine with 'smokey joe' not going to prison for 4 years for smoking a little weed if thugs like this actually serve time..
Showing up for work actually helps.
Barak, can you say, bye mama. I love you.
The good ole boy system if full affect.
John Brown, at the car wash, cash in bag, deliver to the congressman. Boo
I'm pretty sure The Mississippi Commission of Judicial Performance wouldn't find enough to remove her from the Bench. Granted she has done many things any reasonable person finds objectionable, but she hasn't, that I can see and research, done anything blatantly illegal. We, and I am in this group, may not like her decisions and her use of the Bail/Bond system, but she is within her right as a Judge. I also do not see Master Patton being convicted on all counts, as the political system/structure in MS and Hinds County will play a significant part of the pending trial. Now I do believe that RSS should have been impeached and dis-barred for his conduct in not just young Master Barak's action, but that of others of his ilk.
"My first thought was this is for Barak Patton's protection. No doubt there are quite a few family and friends of the little 14 year old girl that will probably go beyond medieval on Mister Barak Patton should the find him on the streets." I must agree with you on this issue. What I find, for lack of a better phrase, why has this not already happened to this member of the Youth Ministry of Jackson?
There's indictments, and then there's convictions. I have zero confidence that a Jackson jury will convict him -- especially if the victims where white.
" So what's the story with Robert Shuler Smith? "
Now that's a great question.
Private practice I would guess.
(And I didn't say anything about eyebrows).
Fry this buzzard. What i don't get... all the cons have a reputation for laying out jailhouse justice for those who abuse children or women. Why is there no street justice for the same? He's obviously well known in the community for being a violent fiend...A rapist of a child wouldn't last a week in jail. Why do "the streets" let him continue on this path?
