MCPP: Why September 11th Felt More Poignant This Year

September 11th felt much more poignant this year. Perhaps that’s because it is twenty-five years since the attack on the Twin Towers, and a quarter of a century seems more of a milestone.

As we remember where we were that day, we reflect on how far we have come since. And then we remember those who never got to have those years, and the sense of loss swells up raw and powerful.

It caught me off guard that I could still feel like this about events all that time ago.

Maybe September 11th was more keenly felt this year because the 25th anniversary of the attacks falls in the year of America’s 250th anniversary of independence. Our sense of grief at the loss of almost 3,000 Americans is amplified by the celebratory mood we shared on the Fourth of July.

As I wrote this, I recalled how the sense of disbelief at what I was watching gave way to anger as it became clear that this was the work of Islamist terrorists.

How dare they, was my overriding sensation. How dare these savages come into the West, exploit its openness, and plot mass murder?

Time, they say, is a great healer. There seems to me to be something raw and unhealed about that day.

I still feel angry about what happened on September 11th. We should all feel angry about it.

America has suffered national disasters before. But twenty-five years after those earlier calamities, there seemed to be a resolution of sorts.

A quarter of a century after Gettysburg, the Civil War was long since over. The country was rapidly industrializing. A batch of new states were lining up to join the Union.

Twenty-five years after the Wall Street Crash — albeit that was only an economic calamity — the Great Depression was a receding memory. America was prosperous again.

By 1966, a generation after Pearl Harbor, Japan and Germany had long ago been crushingly defeated. A thriving America sent Surveyor 1 to make the first soft landing on the Moon.

Twenty-five years on from the September 11th attacks, there seems less of a sense of any resolution. That, maybe, is why we felt the way we did yesterday.

Twenty-five years on, and America is $40 trillion in debt, a lot of it incurred fighting aggressors who have not gone away.

For most of the intervening time, America has been led by political and cultural elites that have comprehensively failed to accept the essential truth about that day: those terror attacks were the work of a particular strain of Islam — and not a fringe one.

After all that happened and all this time, many are still marinated in cultural relativism — the false belief that all cultures are essentially the same. So they still cannot really see why America was attacked that day, or recognize that there are people around the world who would do the same again in an instant if they could.

It was not “hate” that destroyed the Twin Towers. Nor, the Iraq war notwithstanding, was it Saddam Hussein. It was a belief system that since the 11th century has asserted the primacy of revelation over reason.

The Ash’ari school of Islam taught that the world does not run on natural laws to be understood by reason. Everything happens by constant divine intervention. There is no cause and effect — nor objective morality. God does not command what is good; whatever He commands is good.

This is the way of thinking that made a group of Saudi and Egyptian men hijack those planes.

They did so, ultimately, because we in the West see the world the other way round.

In the Judeo-Christian tradition, God commands us to do what is good because it is good, not because He commands it. Morality is rooted in objective, abstract principles, which invites moral reasoning. The world runs on cause and effect, which invites inquiry.

Western democracies base their political order on reason and free will — man-made law, arrived at through deliberation. To the Islamist, that is a form of shirk. The law of man cannot be placed on the same level as the law of God. One tradition holds that all essential truths have already been revealed. The other holds that truth is there to be discovered.

That is not a disagreement about policy — or Gaza or the Gulf or Israel. It is not a difference that can be settled by a UN resolution, a different foreign policy, or a different President.

It is a disagreement about what the world is.

Not only have we failed to see the nature of the threat we face for what it is. We have done too little to ensure that the generation of Americans born since that day has a keen enough appreciation of what it means to be an American.

We need to dedicate the next twenty-five years to ensuring that a generation of Americans grows up appreciating why this is the greatest republic in human history — and why our way of life is worth fighting for.

Take a national tragedy and misuse it to spread misinformation and hysteria regarding an entire faith (the article is clear that’s what it’s doing). Never let a national tragedy go to waste, right? Islamophobia looks ugly on you, Kingfish.

Decided Against Using Name said...

A phobia, by definition, is a fear. There is no fear of Islam, only a need to be aware of its evil intent. Islam is not a religion - It's an ages old totalitarian political ideology.

I don't wish to be conquered and the worst form of conquering is the prospect of having my head separated from my body. I don't fear that, but I'm aware there are those among us who covet that notion for conquering 'infidels'.

The proper term is not Islamophobia, it's Islamovigalence. Vigilance - being constantly aware of, in this case, danger. You accused Kingfish of "spreading hysteria". Awareness and vigilance are not hysteria.

We used to see Co-Exist bumper stickers. Islam does not co-exist and its mosques are not churches in a religious context.

The brainrot that 1:24 posted (probably drunkenly) is exhibit A for the scared little b*** mindset that Islamophobic slop like this article causes to develop

1:24 thinks he’s vigilant, not hysterical. But, in reality, he’s scared of the 80 year old Bosnian grandmother who lives down the street and doesn’t bother anyone.

Scared of your own shadow for no good reason is no way to live life

Have you no shame?

1:24 for the win. Until one has lived/worked in a moslem country, one can not be fully aware of the demonic curse that mohammed et al unleashed on the civilized world...

1:24 and 1:33 would be outraged if they were smart enough to know that they teach Arabic numerals in American schools.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
