Sid Salter: Mississippi "Yellow Dog" Democrat Remembers Carter Moderate on Race, Faith

Native Mississippian Wilson Golden is a proud “yellow dog” Democrat. A Marshall County product with strong ties to Clarksdale and Greenville, Golden’s connections to the presidential campaigns of former President Jimmy Carter are significant.

Carter died Dec. 29 at age 100 after a lengthy illness at his home in Plains, GA.

Golden, 77, now resides in Gainesville, GA, after successful careers as an attorney, lobbyist, state government staffer and Democratic party operative. In 1976, Golden was a young Mississippi Democratic National Convention delegate for Carter at Madison Square Garden in New York.

He later served as a DNC delegate for both Bill and Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, and was a member of the Democratic National Committee in the early 1990s. In Mississippi, Golden was a key legislative staffer for the late William Winter.

Golden draws strong parallels between the political careers of Winter and Carter.

“Their careers were great transitional times. In the South, it was difficult for Democrats to sidestep the issue of segregation and civil rights regardless their actual beliefs. But at some point, both Carter and Winter grew weary of having to nod to segregation,” Golden said.

“Both had lost campaigns over the issue, and both decided to be who they were – which coincided with some of their greatest campaign victories,” he said. “They shared the traits of moderate, progressive stances on race, and they shared a strong religious faith.”

In 1976, Carter was the last Democratic presidential candidate to win a majority in Mississippi and one of only two to carry the state since Adlai Stevenson II of Illinois carried it in 1952 and 1956 against Republican Dwight Eisenhower. Carter’s 1976 win was a narrow one, taking only 49.56% of the vote but winning all seven pledged Mississippi electors in the Electoral College.

The former president was also a close friend and confidante of the late Owen Cooper of Yazoo City, the driving force behind what would become Mississippi Chemical Company, a farmer-owned nitrogen fertilizer manufacturing company. Cooper was also a pillar of the Southern Baptist Convention (serving as president in 1972) and that group’s domestic outreach arm, the Home Mission Board.

Cooper’s outspoken moderate stance on race went against the white political majority and saw him lead ventures to address domestic U.S. poverty and healthcare disparities along with global hunger challenges in India.

It was Cooper’s national notoriety in agricultural interests and moderate Southern racial initiatives that brought successful Georgia peanut farmer and Georgia Baptist Convention leader Jimmy Carter into Cooper’s orbit. Cooper’s backing was a key reason that Carter carried Mississippi’s 1976 presidential election vote.

The Carter presidency is best known for the accomplishments of the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel that Carter brokered between Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin that brought progress on the path to peace in the Middle East. The work would eventually earn the 39th President the Nobel Peace Prize.

But the Carter administration also struggled mightily with the Iranian Hostage Crisis, scandals involving his Office of Management and Budget director Bert Lance and his late brother, Billy Carter, and a national economy that draws comparison to issues confounding the nation today – high inflation, rising interest rates and the added malady of high unemployment.

Carter’s re-election bid was a political disaster as Republican Ronald Reagan won the 1980 race in a national electoral landslide, including a win in Mississippi by 1.33% of the popular vote. But the 1980 race established the GOP dominance of presidential politics in Mississippi that continues today.

Asked about the future of the Democratic Party in Mississippi, Golden said that while he viewed his party as having “a very healthy minority” he didn’t “see a Democratic majority coming any time soon.”

“Trump has carried Mississippi for three straight presidential elections,” Golden said, “Republicans have prevailed in six straight Mississippi gubernatorial elections. For state and local politicians, many seem to be choosing the path of least resistance.”

By presidential executive order, a National Day of Mourning for Carter is scheduled for Jan. 9. A state funeral will be held at Washington National Cathedral on that date.

In this country, we don't (or shouldn't) elect presidents based on their religion or their faith. Carter's presidency was disastrous.

The only positive thing in Sid's article regarding Carter's presidency is that he (supposedly) brokered a peace deal between Sadat and Begin. A broker is an intermediary, a moderator, a person between several other parties to help move a process along.

Carter had nothing to do with the nuts and bolts and decisions of those two men in forming the 'peace accord'. He merely moderated and smiled rather large.

And we can't judge his presidency on swinging a hammer any more than we can judge it on how many years he sat behind home plate at Braves' games.

Carter was a good man, a man of faith, a kind person, benevolent and rather altruistic. R.I.P.

Salter purposefully avoids reminding the reader that the "white political majority" were fire breathing racist white DEMOCRATS. That is who was running the show back in 1976. Back in 1970, when Carter was running for Governor or Georgia, he duped those same racists into thinking that he was in their corner in order to win office. JUST as William Winter ran for Governor against John Bell Williams in the 60s as a fellow segregationist. But Democrats in Mississippi don't want that discussed either.

Sid, please update the AI that advised you to refer to your fellow comrade as a product. This shill schlock that you have submitted smells like a product from a patient of ye olde vet school.

@Capt Frag thats such a tired comment. Everyone knows all those southern dems would be hard right republicans today. Parties evolve. Neither major party looks like it did 50 years ago.

A couple of decades or so ago I watched William Winter at a Millsaps graduation stir up hate. If one had never been to Mississippi, and watched Winter from a remote location, they could have assumed absolutely nothing had changed since James Meredith enrolled at Ole Miss in 1962. It was nothing short of race hustling hate designed to divide and conquer, and keep the Democrat base “mad enough to vote.”

When white liberal leftist Democrats like Salter, the ones Malcom X warned us about, start talking about decades old segregation, you can bet they’re trying to divert from their current colossal failures as a party - like the last 4 Biden years.

And what religious faith protects criminal illegals from being deported, pushes for boys with penises in the little girl’s bathrooms, uses crime and chaos to control cities forever, race baits, etc. etc., etc.??? Good grief!

Yet you better believe no republican these days will admit that.

8:32 The political climate was totally different in the 60's and 70's No white politician could be a politiican if he espoused moderate views on race. Impossible. He could only play along with the racist majority and take moderate actions once elected. That was Winter and Carter. Of course they were Democrats. At that time we were still fighting the civil war against the liberal Republicans. They had no choice if they wanted to hold office.

Second worst President in the history of America-

Carter is the only Democrat Presidential candidate I have ever voted for. I was fresh out of college and I found Carter's southern background, naval academy and nuclear engineering background appealing. I thought he would be an excellent President; boy was I ever wrong.

@8:56, you are right. Parties evolve. Republicans are not racists. Too bad your memo can't seem to find its way to Mississippi's LBC and the progressive journo denialists who carry their water.

No President could have done a damn thing about the oil embargo or could have prevented the Shah from losing power. The release of the hostages was held up by a deal with the GOP bigwig political players to hold off until after Reagan takes the White House and he'd be favorable to Iran and not take any military or economic action against them. I doubt Reagan was aware of the "behind the screen" moves being made to ensure his election. Big oil wanted Carter to fail as well. He was in favor of nuclear energy and put the solar panels on The White House that still saves us tax dollars. Mississippi should be damn glad he created FEMA before Katrina hit!
At least, both Carter and Reagan were honorable men of The Greatest Generation and did not, unlike some in their party then and now believe that lying and cheating and self-interest is good for a nation. You all will rue the day you helped create another Russian oligarchy and find out Catholics and other non-Protestant religions will not be tolerated in government or in our schools. though I'm sure some of you only hope that the new South Africa will be better than the last one. But, those of us who remember the 1950's know with certainty, we are better off today and better off than when Trump's last tariffs brought on inflation! Economics doesn't dramatically change even in weeks/ Only the stock market responds to psychological beliefs and then reality sinks in. Bad things happen when you don't read non-fiction or assume you already know everything you need to know. But, Lord only knows why you've all come to believe that being smart, well-educated and ethical are bad and you'd rather have some idiots or unethical con men running government unless you are too insecure to think you can compete and succeed on a level playing field!

@8:56 Joe Biden has always been a literal open racist. Says racist shit all the time. And the racist left wing media tives him a pass. Meanwhile nobody can point to a single racist thing Trump has ever said. Instead the say that he’s a racist because he called out criminals who happen to be black. Oh, and he wanted to kick a bunch of bums out of his properties who never paid their rent on time.

I wonder how many people realize how that 'yellow dog democrat' phrase originated. It was in the late 19th century, and meant that one would vote for a yellow dog before voting for a Republican. It meant that one was party first, no matter how right or how wrong, it was always a duty to the Democrat party. Today, virtually all Democrats are of this mindset. More moderate politicians would never call themselves this.

Jimmy Carter didn't serve during WWII. Unless you are 80+ I doubt you remember the 50's with certainty and beyond the eyes of a teenager.

11:25 AM, how does it feel being perfect? It must be amazing! You leftist Democrats have never ever made a single mistake in your lives, have you? It’s ALWAYS the GOPs fault – even when the president, house and senate are all controlled by Democrats.

11:30 AM, thanks for correctly pointing this out. Says a lot about Gordon and Salter. Only a fool would pledge allegiance to any party regardless of what it becomes.

@1140 Carter was in the Naval Academy during WWII and was thus considered active duty. He, of course, saw no action in Annapolis.

You may have the most severe case of TDS up to this date, and that is saying something. You have yet to post anything less than a rant that refers to Trump in some way.

Agreed, 8:37! That headline made my brain itch. It's so, so, 'Ole Miss Artsy Literary Loser'. (and a quarter-century past the term's expiration date)

In Gone With the Wind, Scarlet talked about 'Hangdog Losers'. That's what I think about, when I see the words, 'Yellow Dog Democrat'. It's so self-consciously Southern Literary - in the worst sort of way. It was gratifying to see that 'Yellow Dog Books', in Madison, lasted exactly as long, I presume, as did the term of the lease. I wonder if there were ANY customers. I wonder whether anyone even wandered inside.

I have a photo of Carter, when he was running, with a Confederate Battle Flag as a backdrop. I'd post it here but the Fish doesn't allow photos. He was just as much a racist as any other Southern politician at the time as well as many in the north. Also have a photo of Bill Clinton and Bush Sr sitting and grinning with George Wallace. So back down off your pious horse, goober.

3:39 I have a picture of Richard Nixon shaking hands with Chairman Mau and later standing with a Communist Flag in the background. Obviously a Communist politician in our very midst. Thank you for your insight.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
