Governor Ends Jackson Emergency

Governor Tate Reeves issued the following statement.

Governor Reeves issued an Executive Order officially ending the August 30, 2022, State of Emergency surrounding the City of Jackson and surrounding areas of Hinds County that receive water from the O.B. Curtis Water Treatment Plant effective 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, November 22, 2022.

In late August, with a nearly month-long boil water alert in place, and the two primary raw water pumps at O.B. Curtis previously removed for repairs and out of commission, the total collapse of the City’s water system was imminent. Governor Reeves declared a State of Emergency in response to this situation.

As the Executive Order notes, “in less than 72 hours after the emergency was declared, water pressure was returned to the City of Jackson, and in less than 15 days the boil water alert was lifted.”

Following the state’s intervention in the crisis, the Environmental Protection Agency has now determined that the water from both the O.B. Curtis Water Treatment Plant and the J.H. Fewell water Treatment Plant safe to drink.

Furthermore, the Jackson City Council has unanimously approved an agreement with the federal government regarding appointing a third-party administrator to operate the city’s water system.

“I’m incredibly thankful to the folks at the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, Mississippi State Department of Health, and the Mississippi National Guard who worked tirelessly to restore clean water to the residents of Jackson and respond to this emergency situation. They have made countless repairs, brought in new equipment, and done heroic work,” said Governor Tate Reeves. “The only remaining imminent challenge is the city’s refusal to hire routine maintenance staff, and that cannot constitute a state emergency. We need new leadership at the helm so that this crisis of incompetence cannot continue.

“It is also clear that the federal government is working to ensure that Jackson political leadership does not have the authority to mismanage the water system any further. That process needs to be completed, and it needs to be completed quickly. As the justification for an emergency under state statute no longer exists and in order for that momentum to continue, we need to stick with our deadline to end our State of Emergency and our operating of the city’s water system for them. I am hopeful that the federal government’s efforts to take control away from incompetent hands will wrap up swiftly.”

The Executive Order can be read in full here.

I can’t wait to see Sista Rukia, Mayor Lumumba, Dr. Omari, NAACP President Derrick Johnson, and Judge/President Carlos Moore knock that racist, chicken biscuit loving Governor down a few notches.

Somebody call Don Lemon and Anderson Cooper!

"take control away from incompetent hands."

Couldn't have been said more exacting or accurately.

As one who still lives in Jackson, speaking on behalf of many of us - thank you for (1) restoring running water, and therefore ability to flush toilets to attend to the sewage; and (2) stepping in and providing drinkable water - something the incompetent leadership of Jackson had failed miserably, despite their being under a previous order (from March 2021) to have a plan in place to provide bottled water FOR ALL THE CITIZENS, not just the couple of hundred a day the incompetent folks took care of, through donated water.

Jackson = incompetent leadership. Needed to be said.

Mike drop moment for Tate. Antar is the SBF of municipalities in the U.S.

In business if you can’t do the job you get fired. The city needs solid leadership. Unfortunately, the word racism will be used to hide what is not being done for the citizens of Jackson. The list is endless and sadly doesn’t end with zoo.

NE Jackson resident here. I live a block away from the moron in chief mayor… everyone thinks he’s an idiot and can’t do anything but live off the taxpayer. Go to hell Lumumba both you and your crooked sister.

I wonder if Chokwe is surprised? I mean he asked for an extension after demanding the state get out.

Stand your ground Governor! There are more cities in Mississippi needing resources who will most definitely appreciate it.

Jackson citizens... y'all voted for this sh!t show, it's all yours!!

It is a state of emergency in Jackson. No doubt about it. Killings, car jackings, garbage disposal issues, boo boo water, etc… but there is nothing the state can do to fix it. And none of us can fix it. The mayor seems to have it all figured out. He seems confident in his press conferences and he seems very frustrated when asked about the issues. If you live in Jackson or in a surroundings county or city you should be worried about your family and property value. I have to work in and around Jackson but I do not invest my money here in real estate. I get the heck out of here as soon as I get my work done each week. Thank goodness for technology and the Flexibility to work just about anywhere. Folks put up with the Jackson stuff when they had to but now folks can work from anywhere. I see home values in the Jackson area and surrounding areas going down from here on out. Sorry, but reality is real.

Reeves has such an inflated opinion of himself and his power and influence. Little does he realize that Lamumba will fix any problem with simply nothing more than another press conference. Never underestimate the power of gum bumping and hand waving.

Nothing will change. Nothing ever changes in politics. Don't kid yourself thinking that there will ever be drastic change.

The state's now refocusing it's momentum towards the realization of more and better frontage roads and beef plants.

"Nothing will change. Nothing ever changes in politics. Don't kid yourself thinking that there will ever be drastic change."

That's the spirit!

Remember when Lumumba refused the Justice Department's offer of resources to help defend the City against criminals, but the Mayor refused because he "didn't want Trump militarizing the City."

So, I was shocked when the Mayor actually asked the State to extend the emergency in the first place.

The Governor is not only unethical but stupid if he doesn't know that the affluent Jacksonians who are Republicans won't hold his behavior during this crisis against him...and sadly, socially against his children as we will be concerned about the level of ethics and honesty he modeled for them.
When they don't get accepted for memberships or jobs, remember why.
You were willing to hurt our children for political gain.
And, you are blind to the corruption in your own " government".
Shame on you.

1:39 By “his behavior during this crisis” I assume you are referring to the Governor

1) declaring a state of emergency
2) making sure we can flush our toilet
3) fixing the water system so we get clean water
4) turning over the management of the water system to a conservator - not the Mayor.

I give him an A+

November 23, 2022 at 1:39 PM, you're a fine one to be pointing fingers.

@1:39 - just what was unethical or stupid - I'll settle for an answer to either one - of what the Governor did in acting to resolve the mess that Lumumba created and didn't bother to handle after it was in progress.

Water bills not being collected for five or more years, leading to a financially broke enterprise fund, leading to the inability to do basic maintenance, replace equipment, or fill vacant positions - leading to a month long period where no one in the city could use the water (if they had any), the failure of the treatment plant due to the main pumps being removed by not repaired or adequate replacement pumps ----- creating a total failure of the system.

Governor - the one you said was stupid and unethical moved to address the problem, AND address the other failure of the Mayor which was to provide drinkable and potable water to the entire city (as opposed to the few pallets a day that the Mayor got "donated" that provided fewer than 1,000 of the 150,000 citizens to get a few bottles of water per day),

Yes, the Mayor failed in all aspects of HIS JOB, and the Governor - the one you state was unethical and stupid - stepped up and (1) got water to all the citizens, anybody and everybody; (2) got rental pumps installed; (3) got the pumps that had been removed repaired and replaced; (4) fixed multiple other problems at both the plants that had been ignored for years.

Yes, the Governor - the one you consider to be stupid and unethical - fixed the plant, and was prepared to arrange for someone to manage the plant for the coming year, until your bullheaded Mayor stepped up and said "we don't need and won't accept your help anymore. We have it under control as of November 17th."

That being the case, the Governor had no basis for continuing the declared emergency and gave it back to the egominded, bullheaded Mayor.

So, I'm waiting - tell us what was stupid, or unethical.

The same group that wants to control how the money is spent in Jackson, IF, the State actually will send them the money and I hope the State does not are the ones who claim they are being victimized by us who they call racists and are the same people who:
1: Cannot control crime among their people.
2: Cannot contain their raw sewage of which 927 million gallons flowed into the Pearl down river to other cities that obtain their water from the Pearl and eventually into the Gulf where a lot of us get our seafood. Think about that next time you sit down to eat fresh gulf shrimp and oysters and let it sink in as to how much of that raw boo boo went South into our Seafood source. I’m still waiting on what the EPA and MDEQ is going to do about this since a few private sector companies have gotten into severe trouble within the past few years over much much less.
3: Their residents have destroyed most cable barriers and guardrails all over the Interstate in the City because of their unruly driving. And while mentioning their driving it is absolutely dangerous to drive into Jackson between the hours of 6:00 am to 7:30 am due to the fact that their residents have never taken a drivers Education course….well, why should they? You have to make it to the 10th grade first. Am I correct????
4: Cannot properly run and operate a City Government without failure.
5: Cannot keep the roadsides clean of debris although MDOT needs to do a much better job of it themselves on the interstates within the City
6: Cannot and will not pay their vendors.

1:39 sounds like they didn't sell soon enough and now are tryin to 'shame' a good leader in order to desperately reinflate some value in their property.

So very obvious.

1:39 are you suggesting these NE Jxn Republicans will make Tate pay by voting Dem in the next election? Because Tate will get the Republican bid based on the common sense the rest of us conservatives thankfully possess.

By all means, go ahead.

You guys do seem to enjoy Democratic city leadership so much.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
