Middle School Melee in Gluckstadt

A brawl broke out at Germantown Middle School last week.  The video posted below shows at least six students engaged in fisticuffs while their shocked classmates watched.

The school's administration sent a letter to parents warning them that they better make sure their kids behave ... or else.

The Madison County School District issued this statement to JJ:

When students make poor decisions, we are quick to respond with appropriate disciplinary action. The recent incident of a fight at Germantown Middle School involved a situation that started off campus and spilled over into school. None of the students involved had a prior history of disciplinary infractions in our district, but inappropriate behavior such as fighting is not tolerated within our school communities. In such cases the highest measures of disciplinary action are pursued. At Madison County Schools we are committed to safety, and our focus is on outstanding academics, arts, and athletics. Situations on campus that detract from that focus are investigated, and per guidelines in our student handbook disciplinary measures can include removal from the school community and referral to alternative school.

The only surprise is that at least one of these ferals, thankfully, didn't produce a gun.

Every time there is an incident like this the school should do a review of address information. Madison county has a lot of fraud where kids use a relative's address to go to schools nowhere near their actual residence. If problem children don't live in the district they need to be removed from the district. If the kids live in the district they need to be punished to the fullest extent of the law. Assaults like this are not a school policy issue but a law enforcement issue. Tolerance of bad behavior by the school is tacit acceptance.

Anonymous said...

Zero Tolerance. Zero Tolerance. The school district must take very seriously any fights involving multiple bangers. When two kids are fighting it may be a simple personal matter between kids. Punish them, it's part of growing up. But when numerous kids are involved it's a sign of a different kind of problem which must be addressed before it becomes prevalent in the school. Identify the gang or faction and eliminate it/them from the school premises immediately. Nip it in the bud.

Anonymous said...

A video of a fight between middle school kids at school is age restricted?

I like the letter to parents telling them that their children's bad behavior will have real consequences. Engaging in mob brawls at that age is a bad sign that needs to be addressed.

Must be bussing kids in from Jackson? This kind of stuff doesn't happen in Gluckstadt!(As I clutch my pearls)

Parent of two Germantown students here.

Its not just the middle school. The high school regularly has "gentlemen's disagreements." It doesn't even phase the kids anymore. In my opinion, its all a leadership issue. Ridgeland is supposedly even worse.

The district level doesn't want to expel kids like this because it looks bad.
The school level threatens kids that share the videos as much as the ones that are involved.

There needs to be some honest conversation about what is happening in these schools. There's been a lot of money invested in Gluckstadt over the past decade and a lot of it is tied to "great schools." Developers of these new neighborhoods aren't too happy with this getting out, but its been going on for a few years.

The elementary schools are excellent. Something happens once they get to middle school. I'll let others opine on what is really going on but there is a problem that needs to be addressed.

Embarrassed but relieved that this is finally getting out.

As I know this will be read by Dr. Seals and the board because they are also embarrassed, let me appeal:

PLEASE look into what is going on at Germantown Middle and High. Good kids are scared to go to school. We've talked to principals. They give us lip service and keep on doing the same thing. Your statement is an absolute lie - this may have been their first "official" misconduct, but at least two of these kids have been involved in altercations earlier this year.

I don't have to tell you a story about Dwan Wakefield. You know it. He walked the halls of a Madison County school as a Jackson resident. He starred on the football team and got away with fighting, cursing out teachers and possibly even more - all because he was a "troubled" kid that could throw a football.

At 17 years old, he was found guilty of murder, kidnapping and motor vehicle theft in the death of little Kingston Frazier. You may not like it, but the way you treated him when he terrorized Ridgeland High School and got away with it led to the behavior that killed that little boy.

Don't make the same mistake with these kids at Germantown. Zero tolerance. Get them out of those schools by any means necessary.

If my kids were enrolled in Germantown Middle they would not be after this. I would literally move or bite the bullet for private school before I send my kids into this lion's den.

Quit acting like white kids never fight. We used to get in fights all the time, of course it was usually after school, not in school. That's part of being a teen boy. Meanwhile, Madison Central continues to send students to the ER after vaping the wrong stuff in the bathroom. A zip code is no magic for teenagers acting like teenagers.

Something very similar to this happened to me as a freshman in high school. I’m white and I got into a fight with a black guy and as soon as it was clear that I was going to win, every black guy in our grade descended upon me and proceeded to punch and kick me. I was the only one who got suspended. This was in the Rankin County School District in the late 1990s.

I think two things will come out of this...

1) Jacksonians and Rankinites will have their laugh at Madison's expense, today... as they drive back down their pot hole infested roads... to a house with no water... with a swiss cheese of fresh bullet holes in the sheetrock. Or pass 3 meth heads... down a dirt road... behind a jacked up z71 running 38's... to pull up to their trailer park. In the end, Madison still wins.

2) The Reunion parents just gasped a collective sigh of agony as they realized little Johnny might actually see what the real world is like. Looks like a homogenous race private school is in little Johnny's future.

Seriously, this isn't even news.

Second, this fight happened in Gluckstatdt, not Madison.

Third, what proof do you have of Madison wives sleeping around, as opposed to just making a stupid comment to feel better about yourself ?

Fourth, it's laughable for you to say you are safe in northeast Jackson. Remember the recent Fondren shooting, all the recent Belhaven carjackings, the shooting on Winchester about two blocks from JA, or the shootout on Old Canton ? How many murders were there in Jackson last year per capita as compared to Madison ? How many criminals are tried and convicted in Jackson versus Madison ? Seriously Jackson had more murders last year per capita than any other city on the whole country. But yeah, you keep thinking your safer there, Einstein.

I'm no Madison over or Jackson hater, but I do hate completely stupid comments like yours.

The discipline at Germantown Middle School is one of the issues.
Several teachers have transferred to other schools in the district.
The administration is too lax and wants to be pals with the kids.
Maybe a change in leadership will help.

Anonymous said...

Moved from NE Jax to Madison a few years ago and pulled our three kids out of their private schools, where they were miserable, and put them in Madison County schools (not Germantown). Our kids love it. Every one of their teachers, so far, have been leaps and bounds better than their private school teachers were. In our personal experience, the private school teachers were more like babysitters during the day who just assigned loads and loads of class work with very little instruction and then hours of homework every night. We paid thousands in tuition and then thousands more for tutors after school to actually teach the lessons, which also ate up just about every afternoon and evening with school work. This may not be the case at every private school, but it sure was where we were.

At the Madison schools (they are different ages so at different schools from elementary on up), our kids love their teachers and their classmates. They have friends of various skin colors and backgrounds, you know, like the real world. They are thriving academically and socially. Is it perfect? Absolutely not. Is it better than what we were paying a whole lot of money for? Absolutely yes. I realize that our experience is not the same as everyone else’s, but for us, this has been the right choice. So far. We can easily pivot again, if we ever think we need to, but we have seen no signs of needing to do that and have no plans for it.

All of that said, Madison County schools better come down hard, like many others have commented, with zero tolerance for this kind of behavior, at all Madison County schools, not just Germantown.

schoolboy said...

My wife and I are both products of Jackson private schools in the 70's and 80's.

All three of my kids went through Madison schools (Rosa Scott, Madison Middle, Madison Central). Two were National Merit Finalists, and all three got full or partial scholarships to good colleges. I can say with a straight face that we didn't deal with anything at those schools unique to a public school and nothing we wouldn't have faced at JA, JP, MRA or any other private school.

My last child graduated in 2015, so things have likely changed for the worse in Madison schools in the last 7 years (don't live there anymore, so haven't kept up closely). I would attribute some (not all) of the chaos to social media. Fortunately, my kids are old enough not to have grown up with a smart phone in their hands all of their lives. The kids in school today know nothing else. From what I can tell, the fight depicted in the video herein was the outcome of an off-campus disagreement - a high probability that disagreement originated on social media.

The dysfunction of Jackson can't help but spill over to the suburbs. County/city governments in Ridgeland, Madison, Flowood, Brandon, Pearl and Clinton need to stay tough and hold the line - assuming that none of those have already lost the war. Take a look at Henry County, GA if you want a scary example of what can happen to a fast-growing, affluent suburb.

Anonymous said...

Most of the holier than thou residents of Madison did not grow up in Milan or NYC. They grew up in south and west Jackson. They moved 5 miles up the road and built nice houses during a low interest rate environment and pretended to be upper crust pre-destined elite royalty. Problem is, everybody else with a decent job and credick score can do the same thing. Move on up to Grenada and keep pretending. Kirk Academy’s heyday is coming around 2030.

Meanwhile the rest of us will be in Texas and Florida.

Anonymous said...

Madison Schools better take care of this, quickly. The poster who mentioned Henry County, Georgia, or Rutherford County, Tennessee is right. Affluent suburbs can be taken over quicker than you think.

@7:39, 6:15 here. All of my kids had straight A’s at their private schools, and they still do at their Madison schools. The difference is they learn the material from their teachers during class time now, whereas before, the teachers at what you call “high academic environment” private schools did not apparently know how to teach the material well. If a large percentage of your class has to have tutors to teach them what is supposed to be taught by the teachers (and I know you know as well as I do how common of an issue this is if you talk to other parents like we did), then that’s a teacher problem.

By the way, I’m a graduate of one of the “high academic environment” private schools, and let’s just say, it isn’t what it used to be. Again, I’m not saying their current Madison schools are perfect. Far from it. But my kids have been at both private schools and now good public schools, and we’re happier with the academics where we are now. Sorry you’re offended by that. Have a good night.

I assume that you are referring to Prep. Both of my children went through Prep in the honors program, and I never paid for a tutor. Both of them were always on the high honor roll. I never heard from any of their friends that had to use tutors. Prep is definitely more rigorous than most schools in this area. Both of my children always tell me how easy the premed route is at Ole Miss after going through Prep. I know some students at Prep need tutors, but I wouldn’t say the teachers are just babysitters. The teachers are trying to prepare the students for the pace of professional school, so some students may need tutors if they can’t keep up with that pace. Overall, I was satisfied with their education, but I will admit it was very expensive.

Hey @1:14am maybe when you were up late you should have done some research before you posted. Even Google would have gotten you there before you revealed you don't know what you're talking about.

Multiple states have laws on the books allowing the state to take over cities to varying degrees. Here, Jackson is clearly in financial (and other) distress. The legislature could pass a law enabling the state to take it over just as has been done in other states.

Anonymous said...

Somethings going on. According to the publicly available demographics on School Digger, if you look at the three Elementary Schools in the Germantown zone vs. the middle and High School, there's about a 25% difference in minority enrollment.

At Mannsdale Elementary, Mannsdale Upper Elementary and Madison Crossing combined, there were 1,979 students, 488 of them were minority. This averages roughly to each class being 330 students with 82 minorities.

At Germantown Middle, there were 1,072 students, 319 were minority. This averages to each class being 368 students with 107 minorities.

At Germantown High, there were 1,265 students, 415 were minority. This averages to each class being 316 students with 104 minorities.

If there were an influx of minority families, why do they just have middle and high school aged children and not elementary? The answer is simple. The middle and high schools are full of district jumpers. Why this is happening and why its being allowed is the hard question.

Verify data here: https://www.schooldigger.com/go/MS/district/02790/search.aspx

Hello 7:57...1:14 a.m. here. I didn't ask for a civics lesson. I asked, 'by what authority'. There IS no authority to do that in this state. I have no interest in what 'multiple states' laws are. What the legislature could propose to do in the future is irrelevant, not to mention if a bill were dropped it would never get out of committee.

To recap: There is no provision in Mississippi law, including its constitution, for the state, the governor or Ghostbusters to 'take over' the city of Jackson. Thanks for playing, though.

8:38 - An average of 24 fewer minorities between high school and elementary? Not sure that makes any point. Are you, by chance, assuming every 'district jumping' family has school-aged children in all three categories (elem, middle, high)?

If I were a minority parent (not living in the Madison District), with even moderate good sense, I'd probably come to the realization that if I want my 9th grader, or higher, to be able to graduate with prospects other than Popeyes or Kroger.

If, on the other hand, I would be OK with JPS or Canton Separate being a baby sitter for 7 or 8 years...Then, my cap would be turned around by the time he reached ninth grade.

Anonymous said...

9:18 - 8:38 here.

I don't know what the answer is. Mike Kent was three Superintendents and a decade ago.

Most people that I have talked to understand that in a large public school, you are going to have fights, but there is an uneasy feeling about those apartments that are close to the school. If the administration of the middle and high schools are relaxing the residency requirements for any reason, it needs to be corrected with the expulsion of everyone that does not live in the Madison County School District (and therefore contributes to the taxes that fund those schools).

What concerns me is that the powers that be don't see this as a problem. They don't like a light being shined on it, but they expect this to blow over.

Anonymous said...

8:38 - if you line your data up with the Census data - you are on to something.

Its impossible to have a 32% jump in minority enrollment from 5th grade to 6th grade without a massive influx of people. Less than 80 minority residents of all ages a year move to Madison (this includes Madison Central and Germantown zones) Unless these middle school students have no parents or siblings, its statistically impossible.

I am not the original poster but I’ll name school names if it makes the conversation better. I went to St. Richard elementary, St. Joe jr high, JA for high school. I got my undergrad at Vanderbilt and have an mba from Tulane. I’m fairly competent at judging quality education. When I moved back to the Jackson area, I naturally enrolled my kids in JA because that’s what I knew. I, personally, was not happy with the quality of education they were getting. Specifically, the teachers didn’t seem engaged and the mentality was more about who you know instead of what you know. I live in the Madison school district… So, I moved my kids to Madison schools. Hell, my tax dollars were paying for it anyway. And, you know what? It is exponentially better than JA. Not a little bit. Not just athletically. It is almost like JA vs JPS different. The students have more options. There are teachers that engage. True AP classes and clubs for the gifted students. Multiple national merit finalists. Multiple Ivy League and military academy acceptances. I will never look back at private education. I’m almost embarrassed by what JA has become. Prep and MRA are at the same level or below. Sorry. Not sorry.

We received a phone message about behavior standards this week from the school, and I was perplexed. I incorrectly assumed that the call was identifying problem students specifically so I had a talk with my child.

I’m surprised reading comments that praise the school. My retired mother in law refuses to substitute teach there, and now I know why. There are worse schools, but for Madison County this school seems second rate.

The commenter that mentioned Wakefield actually made a good point. Plenty of kids are using their aunts and grandparents addresses to attend and you can generally tell who they are as their outside activities involve intruding on everyone’s living experience. Best to just expel those involved to show them there are consequences in life. Focus on keeping the dumbasses out of class if they’re not enrolled to be educated.

The Madison County School Board needs to step up and do their job on this one. The schools and central office are very aware of the problem and have done nothing to solve it.

The board needs to look at Germantown and Ridgeland schools.

If a student has turned in a lease/mortgage/deed and utility bill, just ignore them for now. Here's where the problem is. Look at the number of "special affidavits" in each school. This is when a parent says that the student lives with a grandma/cousin/friend that lives in the district and their name is not on the deed/lease/utility bill.

In a normal school setting, this should be no more than 2% of the entire student population. If it is more than 2%, that is a big red flag.

Second, take these affidavits and break them down demographically. They should align pretty much with the demographics of the school. If the school is 30% minority, then around 30% of these affidavits should be minority. If it is significantly more, then that's another big red flag.

I think the board would find that both of these issues are prevalent in Germantown and Ridgeland schools.

The article says Middle school. How can a student in middle school mess up his scholarship? Was he at the middle school or is this Germantown high?

Who really has the guts to ask the District Board these questions? Who has the guts to show up?
Might want to consider attending a board meeting to have an adult conversation to ask questions about these residency AND leadership concerns. Who is not doing their job? Why are they not doing their job? If students are fighting, why are they not being disciplined?
The School district sites shows the next MC District School Board meeting is Monday, Feb. 7, 2022 @ 5:00 in the Central Office - Boardroom in Madison.
Per site: Parties wishing to address the board should submit a request to Ellen Aregood at earegood@madison-schools.com, no later than the Wednesday (8 working days) prior to the meeting.

Who is going to be the one who shows up to ask for answers?

Good question 10:13. I was wondering the same thing.

Madison central graduate here. I attended elementary, middle, Rosa, MC. The amount of drugs and gang behavior I saw was ridiculous. Parents are too naive to see what’s going on in these schools. Yes, Madison Central is one of best public schools in the state and they “show” high test results but we are in Mississippi. It is very easy for a child to fall down a slippery slope and become a deadbeat drug addict. I will never ever let my kids attend public schools after my experience in Madison county due schools to the horrible experience I had. I will bet 40 plus percent of the kids do not live in the district. They have a huge problem with false address’s but keep it on the low as with every other problem they have. Such a shame because Madison is a great place to live other than the schools.

"Who really has the guts to ask the District Board these questions?"

Moot question. To ask a question of the Board, you have to be on the agenda. To be on the agenda, you have to have the Board's approval, in advance.

If the Madison County Journal would get all over this, which they will NOT, we'd notice some sphincters tightening up. Until then, everybody is scared shitless of the democrat Justice Department, the ACLU and NAACP.

If you think those three have their tits in a flutter over Voter-ID, just imagine their presence in town if we were to require literal proof of residence for school children.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
