Are we supposed to act like our esteemed legislators are going to actually read this 12 page bill before voting on it?

Anonymous said...

Sadly, many might only read the summary but not the 100 plus page bill, the devil is ALWAYS in the details! By the way, why are the select few legislative leaders responsible for writing the legislation only releasing a summary and not the draft bill???

IDGAF as long as we have weed.
Drunks and pill poppers all over the place.
I just want to have a toke of some high grade on a Saturday evening after mowing my 5 acres.
And before you liver stained hands start with your cliches, I don’t drink every day so why would I smoke every day?

Reviewing 13 page summary - thanks fir publishing Kingfish!
Lots of questions - The tax seems high!!! Also, the timetable is off,
MDOH and MDAC begin issuing licenses on day 60 yet municipalities/counties have 90 days to opt out?
So are they revoking licenses if a city opts out on day 80? Bet there will be lawsuits flying …

$240 tax on big bag of weed seems really HIGH.

$15.00 per ounce of flower or trim” at the wholesale level!!! There are 16 ounces in a pound! They are going to tax trim and flower at $240/pound!! That’s crazy. That’s like a 100% excise tax for trim! It looks like someone copied a RETAIL tax and tried to place it on wholesalers 🙄. This tax structure was proposed by someone who wants to kill this program.

Plus, taxing at the wholesale level and at the retail level just means we are paying taxes on taxes!

This looks like a decent bill except fir this craziness

The people voted on the law they wanted. It’s a shame the legislators think they know better than the people. Democracy is dead in Mississippi.

Anonymous said...

That tax looks high enough to make illegal weed still look like an attractive product. Kinda like making a bottle of whiskey $300 after tax and then being suprised that people are making moonshine.

Anonymous said...

Once our great protectors decide to pass a referendum law, we will be able to vote in the original law again. This attempt by the legislation to kill any meaningful progress will backfire. We may even get recreational passed if this is all they plan to offer.

Unknown said...

Only if the taxes are as high as on coffin nails.

Anonymous said...

The tax is high because they know that this will be a BILLION dollar industry in Mississippi.
They have a pretty good idea how much illegal cannabis Mississippians consume.
They know how much liquor and opioids are consumed.
Hint: It’s a LOT

Anonymous said...

Is this some kind of hoax, they are giving Ag Comish Andy Gibson authority over growing and other key operations AND allowing him to write his own regs? He’s stated and restated publicallt that he’s is against MM. I’m betting he’ll never cooperate! Is this some sort of early Halloween trick from the legislature, appearing to be out together a medical marijuana program but making sure it’s a failure?

Anonymous said...

Here I thought Mr. Bomgar was a man of the people. Then I saw the financial disclosures that legislators have to file. Bomgar has invested millions in facilities that will produce weed. I guess the millions Joel made from his tech business aren't enough. He runs for public office to use his influence to create more millions.
Hey Joel, how much money is enough? Must you use your office of government to create more fortunes?

A $15 per ounce excise tax places a $240 tax on every pound, regardless of quality-tier. At the national average price, this represents a tax of 16.4%. At a $900 pound, which Mississippi should see quite quickly, this represents a 27% tax. The inequity is evident.

Anonymous said...

People in the most vulnerable, lowest income population segments often smoke trim. Trim is also used in making almost all concentrates and edibles. Trim will average $250 a pound in short order, yielding a taxation rate at the wholesale level of 95%. This will result in penalizing those least able to absorb that tax and will cause all concentrates and edibles (the delivery methods preferred by elderly and severely ill patients) to be wildly expensive.

Anonymous said...

Not a high tax at all - $15/ounce is $0.07/joint. Less than the excise tax on a Marlboro light.

Quit your bitching - you wanted recreational (you know, so you can toke up on a Friday after riding your tractor) like you were going to get from the loosely drafted language in the initiative - and here you are going to get it.

Granted, since it is going to be regulated and inspected, it is going to cost you more than street weed from Mexico, but hey, it will be top quality stuff

Anonymous said...

Am I reading that right 4 ounces per month

As a lawyer I always noted how optometrists stayed protected in legislation over the last 100 years.

Who in the world represents them?

They can write a script just like an MD or a NP.

That’s wild to me.

Anonymous said...

I going to get my permit to be legal, but Bubba already has good medical weed down the street tax free. I think I am going to stick with him. I expect his prices will go down too.

Anonymous said...

Don’t be bitter 10:41. You could do the same thing. It just takes talent and effort.

Anonymous said...

Taxes will make black market product more attractive and with weed all over the place….harder to enforce laws against weed.

The police will just give up.

This will result in out of state weed being imported by the ton….with zero taxes.

Silly greedy legislators

That Bomgar guy made millions for a lot of people besides himself. You just got left out I suppose.

Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.

More on the dole dopers, crying for Medicare/Medicaid, addiction treatment, free Covid treatment, and SSI. Slackers and burnouts looking for GubMint money. Not a medical efficacy known.

What idiot thinks the dopers are going to pay tax? What, is there a secret "biomarker" in the taxed stuff? Fools.

Recalling the endless lies from the burnouts about how this "cures everything" and "don't you care about 'mah pain'?!?!?!?" Same set as the Oxy addicts, meth heads, pot heads, thugs, and trailer trash.

All backed by Doper Investors. Like John the Alcoholic Boehner and other RINOs and LiberaLtarian dopers.

Now, one of 'em's bleating about "mah taxes is too high." Classic.

Anonymous said...

Read the summary, the licensed cultivator pays the tax , then it’s passed on to the consumer.

Everything you said is logical. But two things, first the #msleg does not do logical. Second, look at how they heavily tax liquor in this state. It's downright ridiculous what we pay for alcohol here.

They never look out for the consumer in this state.

Anonymous said...

When all they had to do was truly decriminalize weed and focus on teen shooters , meth labs and antimaskers. :)

Anonymous said...

Kalifornia learned that high taxation and lots of red tape created a black market.

I live in Texas now. Medical marijuana requires level of terminal cancer to get prescription. I have glaucoma and leukemia and still don’t qualify

Anonymous said...

Kim Wade says he didn't have Covid. JJ affraid to post this news ? Focusing on the weed .....

Anonymous said...

Trim is used to make edibles, topical creams, and sprays. An excise tax of nearly 100% at the wholesale level leads to 4x pricing at the retail level!! No one is going to be able to make those products with taxes this high.

Oh no! They are going to tax "trim?" Keep the government out of our bedrooms!

Well, I guess break’s over, time for the potheads to get back to work.

Boohoo. Intelligent man makes investments. Do you even have investments? Retirement fund? 401k? Roth IRA? Or do you, in all likelyhood, rely on PERS for your "Retirement fund". If you are I want to be a fly on the wall when you get the news that PERS inevitably cuts pension payouts.

When you walk into that dispensary make sure you are smiling because we'll be taking pictures for submission to the ATF.

Anonymous said...

Look at the the dope heads crying about getting access and now complaining about price.

I guess you want it for free.

This whole thread sounds like a bunch of crybabies. “Ohhh, my pain. My glaucoma.”

I am going to guess these are the same people that can’t be bothered with saving a dime for their kid's education and want free college too.

How about being a productive citizen.

Get off the weed and pills, have a beer and get a plan for your pathetic lives.

Irrelevant to many people including me. We'll just continue to grow our own supply, organic, free, and processed however we like.

I'm Southern, but I am not "MY SIN IS FINE WHILE YOUR SIN IS TERRIBLE" Southern, like 2:00 and so many others.

That 'judge not my sins, because it might interrupt my continual judgment of YOUR sins' is just something we have to get used to here.

I don't really partake in either vice.

But as a spectator, it seems like some of the angry beer drinkers need weed more than the cancer patients.

ATF be Watching said...

Every person who legally participates will become an instant felon if they own firearms, according to federal criminal statutes.

I would anticipate that the local eager-beaver ATF agents will be surveilling dispensaries to record tags and photos.

Then Pres. Xiden can brag about how he is getting tough on felons with guns.

Mississippi isn’t the first state and the ATF doesn’t care.

I trust no recreational drugs to be safe, let alone medicinal, which btw is a bogus label for "half way to legal".

Democrat enabled cartel drugs, laced with cheap, deadly fentanyl generate body bagged kids as it is: legal pot will kill more.

Who thinks abuse of all drugs won't get worse, including needles, human feces, deranged homeless beggars and associated ODs?

MS dopers have dead kids on their hands because nobody just smokes mj: they combine it with coke, crack, meth, liquor etc.

@2:58 PM - mine too, on the bottom of the Rez, including 8-ARs and 15,000 rounds of 5.56, plus 3-Glocks (17, 19, 43), and 1-AK-47 and another 10,000 rounds of ammo.

It was a real tragedy.

All these potheads crying to smoke. So funny how weak they are. Can’t go through the day without smoking weed. What a bunch of weak individuals. Losers.

MS will once again be on public display nationally. This is a Nanny state...the elected officials think they know what is best for us. Always ranked 50th in the worst metrics. Obviously, "they" know best. As for the taxes to solve the state's woes...weren't casinos suppose to pave our streets with gold and make every student a Rhodes scholar? Several years later the Lottery was suppose to do the same thing. Where has the money gone. THE PEOPLE OF MS voted to pass medical marihuana and were denied over a technicality, their voice was heard and the legislators had to get in on the action. This will have no effect on me but MS legislators are a joke. Represent the people who elected you and put your EGO aside. Phillip Gunn, Tate Reeves,

Is Kim Wade kin to Lying Lumumba? said...

1:12 - and you probably believe him.

He didn't deny having COVID while he was looking for treatment, hoping to live. Yes, now that he wants to fire up his audience that will believe most anything they hear on the radio, or read on social media.

But - he has a history of lying - something that's gotten him into 'just a little' legal trouble before.

But if you are happy believing his shit, dance on. (Bet the hospital gave him a COVID test when he was admitted - and I'll further bet that he will never produce his claimed negative result. Hell, I might even give some pretty good odds on that bet.)

It is hard for me to believe that the poorest state in the union with the poorest paid teachers is considering calling a special session so our alcoholic, overweight, ignorant elected reps. and senators can pick up a little spending money at the citizens expense for a special session. This is by no means a time critical issue. Don’t let me get started on the so called state Supreme Court.

Is Medicaid going to cover MM? Asking for several friends.

Anonymous said...

I bet Mary Jane sausage would be really good.

@10:30 AM
Medicaid covers it in other states so no reason to not cover it in Mississippi.

Anonymous said...

A tax of $15 an ounce doesn't seem that bad to me. Producers and retailers can take that in to consideration and probably still make a buck undercutting the black market.

Someone check my math here but:
32 MMCU's per 30 day period with a MMCU defined as 3.5 grams,
32 x 3.5 = 112 grams a month.
we'll convert that to ounces..
112 / 28.34 = 3.95 ounces.
That seems like a lot of weed for one person to smoke in a month.

Am I wrong?

Wow said...

I think it is hilarious how much centralized planning and how much government overreach we have in this so called "conservative" small government state.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
