The alleged racial disparity among Covid-19 cases and deaths in Mississippi has disappeared. Blacks now comprise 33% of Covid-19 cases and 41% of deaths in Mississippi.
Blacks were 67% of Covid-19 deaths in April and 55% in May. Blacks comprise 38% of the population in Mississippi. The statistics from late Spring make it appear Blacks were suffering disproportionately from the virus. However, the pandemic had only just begun. Nearly ten months later, the Covid-19 statistics among ethnic groups have settled down to more closely match their share of the overall population.
Blacks are only 41% of all Covid-19 deaths in Mississippi. The table posted above is copied from the Mississippi State Department of Health's website today. The Health Department adds up the numbers in the "Black" column. Such addition yields 2,087 deaths. 2,087/5,061 = 41%. If only the 1,811 figure is used from the first line, it drops to 37%, one point under the black percentage of the overall population.
The Covid-19 picture improves for blacks when reviewing the number of cases in Mississippi. Blacks make up only one-third of all MississippiCovid-19 cases. Add up all cases in the "Black" column. 77,944/231,490 = 33%. The percentage falls to 27% if just the figure in the top line is used.
What has probably happened is the longer the pandemic lasts, the law of averages began to kick in as it usually does. The pandemic saw an initial surge in black patients and deaths. Blacks were two-thirds of the deaths in Mississippi. Another surge took place among nursing home residents but most of those deaths were white. Nursing home residents once made up 51% of all Covid-19 deaths but have fallen down to 35%. As time passes, the Covid-19 statistics approach population norms.

Yes, more whites have gotten Covid than blacks. More whites have died than blacks. And the percentages even out.
Will other media outlets (Clarion Ledger) run with this? I doubt it because it does not fit the narrative.
The virus is a non-specific killer. It does not kill black people more than white people and black deaths are not the result of "disparities" in health care.
"Disparities" is properly defined as large differences. But the left has now tossed it in to any discussion of any differences. And here there are no large differences.
This is water under the bridge recognizing thst impact on those that have been affected directly by illnesses and deaths for which I sympathize with but were is the reporting on vaccinations per day and are those in charge seeing to it that MS does not fall behind in that area. Too bad that government officials in charge are not focused on exceeding the goal or even publishing clearly when the vaccine wiil be available for all that want it. That is how this country will move past this embarrassing moment in history.

Black deaths are still higher than average, and the percentage of deaths/confirmed cases is also higher for Blacks.
The rate at which Blacks are contracting COVID may have evened out, but they are still dying more frequently when they do catch it.
Yeah the media should report, that black people listened to the science wore mask and practiced social distancing to help lower the spread.

We need to stop this race-bickering and sniping at each other and move on. "Politics" have been happening for centuries. There is nothing new going on except widespread attention being paid to the incredible extremism on both sides. We saw those extremes with BLM riots after George Floyd's murder and the white supremist/conspiracy nut anarchy in DC this week.
