Anduril Industries co-founder and Oculus inventor Palmer Luckey spills the beans on how the H1B visa system operates and why reform is a hard sell.
Immigration policy must be driven by the present, not the past, and business leaders are too terrified of the left AND the right to acknowledge this. Recent H1B discourse revolves around a longstanding immigration sleight-of-hand. H1B proponents point to exceptional people who came here decades ago as if they represent the current state of the program in the same way that advocates for low-skill/illegal immigration point to very favorable immigrant crime/welfare/education/etc statistics that do, in truth, have them beating native-born Americans on many fronts. It is all a sham. The world that created those statistics, people, and businesses no longer exists. Brilliant but desperate Vietnamese fathers who fled communism have nothing in common with young men from Honduras, and the crime rates/economic acccomplishments/integration of the former should not be used to justify mass migration of the latter. Nor should the accomplishments of people who managed to get an H1B visa in the 90s (when the program was capped to just 65,000 visas) be used to justify staffing agencies and tech companies using the program to replace American jobs for less money. The obvious abuse going on is politically suicidal and something that even the most ardent supporters of the visa should want to crack down on, no immigration program can possibly survive the obvious and widely known reality of what is going on. I am a longtime outspoken advocate for stealing the best people from other countries to make our own better, runaway abuse of existing programs robs the government of the worker trust required to do so. Lots of people in the tech space know this. Even the dumb people are smart enough to see it. Nobody actually believes these are all incredible people with unique talents performing jobs no American can. Everyone knows the guy in Cubicle Bay 7 doing mediocre but functional web design for half the salary of his American peers is no savant and doesn't meet the statutory requirements for his H-1B visa. Unfortunately, most people with power or profile are terrified that any public statement or acknowledgement will get them attacked by the right (You guys have been screwing over American workers for years with visa abuse, you damn hypocrite!) or the left (You are racist, sexist, misogynist, and sucking up to this fascist administration!). Or, more likely, both. I know too many tech execs in particular who feel trapped, like the only winning move is to stay silent. JD is blowing the whole thing wide open by putting facts and stats front and center that nobody wants to engage with. Critics will talk about anything and everything else but these damning facts and this obvious truth, that H1B visas serve neither their original purpose, legal purpose, invented purpose, or the American people.

The entire immigration system is fraudulent, just like all othe geovernmental programs
Business want h1b visa for cheaper labor. Just tell it like it is
Whatever you do don't look at the H2-A ag visas!
Total H2-A immigrants in 2025: 398,000.
Total H2-A immigrants in 2006: just over 50,000.
Total H2-A immigrants in Mississippi in 2025: 7,363.
Total H2-A immigrants in Mississippi in 2024: 7,101.
Having worked in tech most of my life, business needs hb1 labor because students in the US refuse to major in the hard subjects. All of the quality EE and Computer Science graduates at MSU get hired by the end of their sophomore year by Silicon Valley. It is next to impossible to hire a quality software engineer in Mississippi. Its got nothing to do with cheap, they make big six figures, even here. There's just not enough home-grown talent to go around.
And in this day in age, if they don't get the visa, we let them work remotely from their home country. This whole thing about protecting jobs is a red herring.
Its waaaay more than that.
Company boards want the appearance of diversity but they also want obedient “yes-men” so they pick an Indian. The Indian culture is still deeply entrenched on a caste system so once upper caste leadership takes root in a company, they want to exploit lower caste H1B labor. Indian managers cant handle dealing with Americans who wont take workplace harassment and abuse. They want impoverished, low-caste bowing and scraping, head-bobbing dhalits who will take abuse. So they work hard to undermine natives and find every way to replace them. The board doesnt care because all they care about is quarterly profits. It doesnt matter if the product becomes enshitified trash (it always does with these people) as long as they can keep the ship afloat and keep their caste-kingdoms obedient and head-bobbing and doing the needful.
Link?
Per your unsubstantiated numbers +3.4% growth nationally, +3.68% in Mississippi. Still abused but nowhere near the scale on the business side.
@10:22
Except you aren’t taking Eastern European EE’s and SE’s. You are taking in folks (freshers, they call them in India) who took the 4 week full stack java crash course from Durga Soft and have a diploma from some non-existent university on the floor above DurgaSoft.
Big numbers here but not as big as there. 'Big six figures' tells us nothing if you don't compare the first digit(s).
No employers just want to out source for less expensive labor. That’s why it’s hard to find computer engineers in America because no one goes into it knowing there job will outsource like what Disney did
Why go into a field of study knowing your job could be outsourced.
10:22 - they can out code American kids 10 to 1. Make fun of them all you like.
10:42 - many are millionaires from stock options
11:04 - no one goes into it because it is difficult and our high schools are producing dumb kids
Problems avoiding STEM courses likey go back to poor 7th grade teachers, magnify in high school, college is too late to fix.
@11:48
I have my doubts that you work in the industry.
Jeet code is notoriously bad.
The last 5 major vulnerabilities and net-crippling events of incompetence turned out to be caused by jeets and jeet code.
From the Microsoft updates that crashed millions of PCs, to the SolarWinds and CloudFlare breaches, to the most recent which turned out that an Indian company signed their trusted keys with numbers like "4" and "44" which exposed half the internet using their key trust to MITM attacks. These people are not better than us.
If we are being honest, it is no secret in the industry that the enormous number of data breaches we have experienced in the last decade were caused by non other than Ranjeet and Poojeeta's incompetence. So don't piss on Americans and say the street shitters who eat off the floor with their hands are better than us.
10:42 - many are millionaires from stock options
Then that undermines the original commenter's position that it ain't about money.
"No employers just want to out source for less expensive labor."
Right, and GM just moved it's plants to Mexico in the 1980s because Mexicans were better at building stuff.
That they worked for 1/12 the American wage had nothing to do with it.

@1148 They can't out code crap. Hell, most of them aren't even doing the work which is why they all want to work remote and when they are doing the work its a crap product because their culture is so agreeable that they will lie to you and tell you that they understand the problem but don't have a damn clue.
It’s not lazy or stupid Americans its greedy employers who outsource jobs for lower wages. Would you go into a field that’s being outsourced
On message boards and FB groups, you read posts by IT people who talk about how an Indian is hired to run the department, then he turns around and runs out everyone and replaces them with Indians.
