Sid Salter: Mississippi Elections Shaping Up as a Familiar Exercise in Black & White

In Washington, Republicans and Democrats share a real concern and a real anticipation: the 2026 midterm election may become a realigning election—meaning one in which significant segments of voters change their partisan loyalty, resulting in a change in control of Congress.

Those fears are stronger regarding the U.S. House than in the Senate, but some believe both could be in play.
Yet for the 2026 midterm elections in Mississippi, the stars are aligning for a status-quo outcome. Available polling and the professional political prognosticators’ reading of the proverbial tea leaves indicate that our state’s incumbent members of Congress appear headed for re-election and aren’t facing particularly close challenges.
In other words, color the midterms in Mississippi with a flamboyant shade of black and white. What does that mean? It means what it has often meant historically in Mississippi – despite more than a half-century of demonstrable progress on the thorny issue of race in our state, the lowest common denominator in politics often remains race.
Looking at the usual suspects that handicap federal politics in Mississippi – including Real Clear Politics, the Cook Political Report, Nate Silver, Larry Sabato and others – white Republican incumbent U.S. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith of Brookhaven is expected to successfully defend her Senate seat. Assignment to the Senate Appropriations and Senate Agriculture committees, along with a key seat on the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, assuredly influences those predictions.
But a look at GOP President Donald Trump’s approval ratings, including how demographics influence midterm election predictions, is instructive.
Amid an expensive and unpopular military conflict with Iran and a prolonged period of inflation at the gas pumps and in the grocery aisles, Trump’s approval ratings are dropping even in states like Mississippi that gave him some of his highest vote totals each time he sought the White House. Civiqs, the left-of-center online polling and data analytics company whose numbers are nonetheless considered highly credible, listed Trump’s national approval rating at 34% this month, while his disapproval rating was 60%.
As of Sept. 15, 2026, white voters alone nationally gave Trump a 40% approval rating and a 53% disapproval rating. In Mississippi, white voters alone gave Trump a 63% approval rating and a 28% disapproval rating on the same date. Mississippi voters overall gave Trump 57.9% of the vote in 2016, 57.6% in 2020, and 60.9% in 2024.
So it should come as no surprise that, like Hyde-Smith in the Senate race, Mississippi’s three white incumbent Republican congressmen – First District U.S. Rep. Trent Kelly of Tupelo, Third District U.S. Rep. Michael Guest of Brandon, and Fourth District U.S. Rep. Mike Ezell of Pascagoula – are all projected to win their midterm races. The same is true for black incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson of Bolton.
Not even the influence of “kitchen table” issues like high gas prices, high food prices and rising interest rates that make it more difficult to borrow money seem to have impacted the power of incumbency, party identification, and factionalism. Historically, these pocketbook issues have impacted what appear to be “safe” races in the most unpredictable ways.
When inflation, wages, health-care costs, taxes, retirement benefits, or local economic conditions become pressing, those concerns can influence voting behavior even in states with otherwise reliably strong partisan leanings such as Mississippi.
In Mississippi, Republicans have maintained a significant structural advantage statewide since 1980, but that advantage is not immune to voter frustration over household economic conditions. Incumbents who appear politically secure still must pay attention to everyday voter concerns because economic conditions have long reshaped political expectations.
Mississippi voters may care deeply about ideology and party affiliation, but elections are often swayed by practical concerns that affect family finances, health care, education, jobs, and retirement security. When those “kitchen-table” issues become acute, they can shift electoral outcomes even in races that initially appear safe.
Bottom line, despite erosion in his approval ratings here and across the country, Trump appears to still have political coattails in Mississippi.

You never know .........seeing that 4 dollar a gallon (87) can make the mind do all kinds of crazy .

Salter’s obsession with racism—real or imagined—seems to interfere with his ability to consider that there are reasons not to vote for black candidates that actually do not involve race. He’s been looking at issues in Mississippi politics through that one lens for years. It’s tiresome, really, and to some extent insulting.

People complaining about gas prices confuse me. This day and age we have tons of electric and hybrid vehicles. Nobody is forcing you to drive a diesel truck or a hummer.

Sid has white guilt and trying to paint every white Mississippian as racist. We will never move ahead. Can you see why everyone is moving away from this shit hole state because it's people like Sid Salter reminding us that all white Mississippian are guilty for being racist even if they are not.

Isn’t every election year “a big change” kinda like every hurricane season is going to be “the most dangerous”, then it turns out the same. Fuel goes up and down all the time and people whine all the time, don’t worry it’s going to go down right in time, just as it goes up for the right in time. Same-Same, but different.

If you support Trump 100% and are happy with the corruption, inflation and war he has brought, then you should probably vote for incumbent Senator Hyde-Smith, who has voted for his policies Every Single Time.

Personally, I will not vote for any incumbent in this election or the next - because they are the ones who have created the government and economy we are living in today.
We can do better.

"are happy with the corruption", tell us more about the corruption, please.

The banner over the Ole Miss game, “Cindy high prices “ was diabolic and don’t know who did it but that’s a chess move 😎😎

Sid — I sincerely hope your prediction of the Senate race is wrong. CHS will NOT get this Madison County vote.

I am not a fan of CHS, but the last thing MS needs is a Soros backed liberal DA as our senator.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
