 The city of Jackson issued the following statement. 

The City of Jackson is proud to announce the 9th annual Mayor's Cup, a community golf tournament set for Friday, September 4, at the historic Pete Brown Golf Course. Now in its ninth year, the event brings golfers together from across the area for a day of friendly competition while raising funds for Junior Golf Development and maintenance of the Pete Brown Golf Course.

This year's tournament is sold out with a full field of 108 golfers. A check presentation will be held at 10:50 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 11:00 a.m.

Richard's Disposal will present $2,500 to First Tee of Central Mississippi and $2,500 to the Grove Park Junior Golf Clinic. Both programs introduce young people to the game of golf while teaching life skills such as responsibility, integrity, and perseverance.

Mayor John Horhn praised the tournament and the partners who make it possible:

"Nine years in, the Mayor's Cup has become one of Jackson's finest traditions, a day when our business community, our golfers, and our young people all win,” said Mayor Horhn. “My thanks go to the golfers, Richard's Disposal, every sponsor, our Parks and Recreation team, and the staff at Pete Brown for keeping this course and these programs strong. When we invest in junior golf, we are investing in the character and confidence of the next generation of Jacksonians."

"Twenty years ago, just 6% of junior golfers were minority participants. Today, 26% of junior golfers are young people of color," said Steve Hutton, Director of Golf for the City of Jackson. "For nine years, this tournament has helped move that number in the right direction, and it has helped us keep Pete Brown in the shape our young players deserve."

"First Tee-Central Mississippi is so thankful to the City of Jackson for this generous gift from the Mayor's Cup Golf Tournament," said Margo Coleman, Executive Director. "This support helps us open doors for children across the Jackson metro area who might not otherwise have the chance to participate in First Tee. We're honored by this partnership."
