Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens issued the following statement.
Hinds County District Attorney Jody E. Owens, II, announced that a jury has found 39-year-old Jimmie Owens guilty of one count of Sexual Battery of a child under the age of 14. On September 8th, 2021, officers with the Jackson Police Department responded to a disturbance call at 6328 Abraham Lincoln Drive. Upon arrival, officers made contact with the child’s mother, Shalayla Honey, who reported exiting the shower to find her boyfriend, Jimmie Owens, alone in her 7-year-old daughter’s bedroom. She observed him sitting on the bed with his legs open and the child positioned between them. When she confronted Owens, he replied that “nothing” was happening. She later turned over video evidence to police in which Owens apologized for his actions. The child was transported to a local hospital. Owens was arrested and transported to Jackson Police Department. After a two day trial, Owens was found guilty of one count of Sexual Battery and was sentenced to life in prison to be served under the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections. “Let me be clear, if you are a grown man sexually assaulting children in Hinds County, you will spend decades if not the rest of your life in prison,” said District Attorney Owens. “If someone you know is harming a minor child, ask them: Is it worth it to destroy your own life?”
