State Auditor issued the following statement.
Full-time tenured professors at Mississippi universities earn higher salaries while teaching fewer students than non-tenure and tenure-track faculty according to a new report released by the Mississippi Office of the State Auditor.
“Mississippi spends hundreds of millions in taxpayer dollars on higher education, and we need to ask hard questions about the return we get on that investment,” said Auditor White. “This report reveals tenure can often be an excuse to get out of the classroom, and that needs to change.” Analysts at the Office of the State Auditor found that the average tenured professor taught fewer students than both the average non-tenure and tenure-track professor at every Mississippi university except for Mississippi State and the University of Mississippi. Despite teaching far fewer students, tenured faculty earn far more than non-tenured faculty. The pay gap varies widely by department. For example, the pay gap between tenured and non-tenured faculty is 70% in business departments and almost 200% in gender studies departments.
Analysts also determined that Mississippi’s Institute of Higher Learning (IHL) does not maintain data showing whether faculty perform a large part of their job duties, like research and community service, despite being responsible for providing oversight of the tenure process. Additionally, IHL allows universities to write their own promotion and tenure policies like those requiring professors to demonstrate “creativity in a service area that enhances school’s diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, professionalism, and wellness efforts.” “Other states like Florida have recently reformed their tenure process, now requiring a review of professors for job performance even after they are granted tenure, and Mississippi should do the same,” said White.

Anyone who knows anything about higher ed knows that tenured professors tend to teach less than non-tenured. They do research and hold administrative roles such as Department Chairs, etc. I know that the low IQ voter to which Shad constantly panders won't understand that, and I guess that's politics. But it's disappointing that a man who went to Havard wastes his time with BS like this.

I had 2 "professors" way back in the 80's that were full blown communists, neither one of which could find their asses with both hands and a set of directions.
Shad, please stay in your lane. I would also like to know if this study was funded using taxpayer dollars. Finally, I don't see you working very much, Shad. You seem to spend much more time promoting your book and grandstanding for the Press. I wonder how much of your taxpayer funded salary is rightfully earned by you, Shad.
What are the salaries of professors at UMMC?
It would make sense tenured professors make the most as they have been there the longest. It would also make sense that they teach less students since they usually teach the higher level classes. Your non tenured teachers get the intro classes with 100 students in them.
I am not a big fan of tenure, but this is Shad putting out a story to appeal to the saw something on Facebook voters.

Ha! How many tax dollars did he spend on this? Tenured Professors should NOT teach as much as their focus should be on research & administrative duties. Also, just curious why he didn't include UMMC in this audit. They have 6-7 schools.

IHL can't prove professors do anything useful outside teaching. They don't track research or service, whatever that is. That's what this report says, and I think that's a real problem.

Tenured professors tend to do a lot of sitting around with no accountability. They don't show up every day to work and compete, because they are untouchable.

The report is garbage & incomplete garbage at that. He didn't include all schools under the IHL umbrella - leaving out one of the largest, UMMC. I'm no professor - not even close, but even I know the difference between tenured & non-tenured. He obviously didn't do his homework & this makes him look like a complete idiot.

@2:07, MDs are hardly the same as the professors at the 8 normal universities. MDs make a ton more money, and their employer has a completely different function.
Even IHL often separates UMMC from the rest of the schools, especially when they're talking about salaries.

Not all faculty at UMMC are MDs. And are you saying zero faculty at the other schools have an MD? Surely that's not accurate!
Shad was doing pretty well until he laid this turd. He clearly does not understand higher ed. Tenure track professors are told to publish or perish. Putting out peer-reviewed research is their priority, not teaching. That is what a PhD is, a research degree.

The tenured professors are bringing it on Shadrick today! Must have skipped classes to "do research" on JJ.
Having attended MSU years back after my community college experience, I understood that the tenured professors didn't teach lower level courses and even some upper level ones because they wanted smaller classes to focus on research and serve on committees. I will go out on a limb and say that tenured faculty at all these schools could teach a little more and spend less time on research, which is some areas amounts to little more than whatever pet project that professor enjoys which may or may not add to the body of knowledge of the field.
That being said Shad is appearing desperate at this point to keep his name in the news and finding new crusades to take on. Maybe his office should focus on how we have 8 IHLs and 4 is plenty for a state our size. Think of the money saved on administration, athletics, facilities, and other areas. Combine four of the schools with larger ones and see how much it saves.
