The city of Jackson will pay for golf carts stolen from the municipal golf course.
The Jackson City Council approved a $17,850 payment to Yamaha for five golf carts stolen from the Pete Brown Golf Facility (Formerly Sonny Guy). Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba said they were stolen from 2019 to 2022. The leases expired recently so the city must either pay for the golf carts or send them back.
Mayor Lumumba said the storage barn was fortified and all golf carts have been equipped with GPS devices. No thefts have taken place since these measures were implemented.
The value of each cart is $3,570. The city self-insured the golf carts.
There was little discussion as the measure passed on a unanimous vote.

"Pro-active" is not in their vocabulary.
Who would have thought that theft is very common in Jackistan. Any bets that the serial numbers of these carts were never recorded? Inside job?
Any bets that at least one employee knows where the carts are located?
Perception of a lease...
Why was Sonny Guy's name taken off? Did he do something racist like vote Republican when the incumbent was unopposed?
They decided to honor Pete Brown, who won twice on the PGA tour.
@KF- AHA!! I am counting that as a Black History Month Post! https://africanamericangolfersdigest.com/pete-brown-golf-facility-honors-late-golf-pro-with-course-renaming/
So the City has been making lease payments on golf carts stolen in 2019-
So some of these carts have been missing for 5+ years and the city is just now “buying” them? Does that mean that they have knowingly been making lease payments on the nonexistent carts the entire time instead of paying the buyout price years ago?
If not in Presidential Hills, check similar neighborhoods.
Zoinks! If it hadn't been for those meddlin' kids...
They were leased from Richard's Golf Carts LLC. Right?
Probably could have gotten out of this lease contract and not had to pay if they chose to do so. Unless there is statutory authority allowing cities to enter into 4 or 5 year leases for golf carts, there is a public policy prohibition against contractually binding the "successor board" with the lease payments, and the contract was probably voidable by city and not enforceable by vendor. Yamaha dealer wouldn't lease them any more carts, but a small price to pay for skating on a debt right? Vendors beware when dealing with public entities.
Check bobcat creek.
Pretty sure they have been worn out due to hard use and lack of care by those who self repatriated them.
I strongly suspect the missing carts have been missing for 5+ years but the city is just figuring it out or actually reporting it.
Case # 24--09-08917 cited in the resolution presented to the Council - what are the chances that's a 2024 Case Number at JPD?
