The Mississippi Charter School Authorizer Board issued the following statement.
On Monday, October 28, during its regularly scheduled meeting, the Mississippi Charter School Authorizer Board (MCSAB) approved the establishment of two new charter schools, marking a significant step forward in expanding educational opportunities across the state. The newly approved schools are designed to address the growing demand for diverse and adaptable educational options that meet the needs of Mississippi’s students and families.
Among these approvals is a groundbreaking initiative: Mississippi’s very first hybrid model charter school, which combines in-person and online learning to create a flexible and innovative educational environment for students.
Archway Charter School will serve grades 7-12 at capacity while implementing a hybrid learning approach, allowing students to benefit from both classroom instruction and online curriculum and providing an enriched learning experience tailored to individual learning styles. The approval of the hybrid model school reflects MCSAB’s commitment to fostering innovative educational practices that can better serve the diverse needs of Mississippi’s children. The hybrid school will offer a comprehensive curriculum that includes core subjects, elective courses, and extracurricular activities, all designed to engage students and encourage collaboration. By leveraging technology and a flexible schedule, the school aims to prepare students for success in a rapidly changing world, equipping them with the skills needed for future careers. Located in Humphreys County, the school plans to open in the fall of 2025.
Mississippi Global Academy will operate a traditional in-person model, focusing on rigorous academic achievement, community engagement and serve grades 4-12 at capacity from the North Bolivar Consolidated School District and West Bolivar Consolidated School District. Modeled after a highly successful Blue Ribbon School in Washington, D.C. this school will bring new and exciting educational opportunities to children and families in the Mississippi Delta.
Both applicant teams were assisted through the Embark Fellowship program in developing their application. This latest approval aligns with the board's mission to promote high quality schools, particularly for students who are underserved. “The application cycle is both rigorous and demanding to ensure that only those founding teams that clearly demonstrate the ability to open and operate a highly successful school are offered a charter. We look forward to working with both schools’ governing boards and school level leaders as they prepare to serve the children of Mississippi,” said Dr. Karmacharya, Executive Director of the Mississippi Charter School Authorizer Board.
