Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey issued the following statement.
On Saturday, November 23, 2024 approximately 3:23 pm the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department responded to the area near 359 Old Hwy 80 near Pelahatchie in reference to an ATV crash involving a teenager.
Multiple medical units responded to the scene including AirCare and found 16 yr old, Roshea Rodriguez McCoy Jr. in cardiac arrest and suffering from a head injury. Tragically despite lifesaving measures the teen passed away.
A preliminary investigation appears to show that the ATV suffered a tire failure which resulted in the teen being ejected off the 4-wheeler.

Prayers sent. Each year, we see these stories of minors involved in tragic ATV accidents. You hear the saddest things during the holidays.
ATVs and golf carts cause so many injuries and deaths to kids and juveniles. Yet, their parents let them ride them like they are bikes. Shame.
My UTV has a recommended tire pressure of 10 psi. It's hard to imagine anything catastrophic happening due to a "failure" at that pressure. Sometimes I don't even notice when mine are flat, since they're nearly flat to begin with.
It's not the kids; it's the adults. The Flowood Fire Captain killed on one. Our ex HOA President, Northshore Parkway, driving a golf cart drunk, with grandchild held in left hand over the road. His adult daughters doing the same thing. And now, Richie Rich, the indicted Bidnessman, has his 6 year old grandsons driving the carts between Lil Miss Richie and PapPaws's Home and Bar at full speed.
It's the adults and the Rankin Culture of Lawlessness and Willful Ignorance. They see Pappaw on the carts at SEC fewtbawl games and think this is how kids grow up. Drunk, stupid, and with untaxed unearned wealth. Mississippi.
He was a good friend of mine rest easy man
What a tragic loss. Condolences to the family. I see juveniles riding ATVs as fast as they can go on our rural road and have called the sheriff's department numerous times about it and told them exactly where these kids live. Nothing ever changes.
Assuming no helmet? At high speed may not have mattered.
Also, a real danger is the kids riding ATV & Golf Carts at night with NO lights on. How incredible stupid is that.? I stopped one kid & told him to turn his lights on. He replied, "Go F**K myself". How rude is that?
the rankin county neiborhoods off spillway at the reservoir are full of juveniles driving golf carts on public roads.
the tattooed teeny boppers of the reservoir patrol do nothing about it.
