Rising Covid Case Signal Need for Caution

Annie Seth authored the following press release for UMC.

The number of COVID-19 hospitalizations is on the rise in Mississippi and nationwide, prompting infectious disease experts from the University of Mississippi Medical Center to encourage taking precautions to limit the spread of the virus as well as influenza and RSV.

Nationally, COVID-19 hospitalizations over the past week numbered 18,871, an increase of 8.7% over the previous week, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In Mississippi, 1,883 COVID-19-like illnesses in the week ending Aug. 26, and 134 new COVID-19-related hospital admissions were reported to the CDC in the week ending Sept. 2. Though that’s an increase of more than 32% over the 101 admissions reported Aug. 5, it’s far less than the 1,360 COVID-19 related hospitalizations recorded Jan. 22, 2022, during the Omicron surge. The national figure for COVID-19 hospitalizations at that time was about 150,000.

“The CDC’s COVID-19 data tracker for Mississippi shows an uptick in COVID-19 circulation in the community, and other viruses are circulating, too,” said Dr. Bhagyashri Navalkele, medical director for infection prevention at UMMC. “With the rise in viral infections, choosing to take precautions such as practicing good hand hygiene and getting vaccinated against COVID-19 will protect you as well as our high-risk patient population.”

COVID-19 vaccines that have been updated to fight current variants are expected to be available as soon as this month.

Respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, can also be dangerous, particularly for young children, even those who had no pre-existing conditions. Most babies who were critically ill with RSV in 2022 were full term and previously healthy, UMMC researchers reported in a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

During the summers of 2022 and 2021, the state’s only children’s hospital, Children’s of Mississippi, saw increases in the number of patients hospitalized with RSV. Spread via respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing, RSV is among the causes of pneumonia and bronchiolitis in children younger than 1.

The virus leads to about 80,000 hospitalizations with as many as 300 deaths among children younger than 5 each year, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics show. On Sept. 5, the CDC released an alert on the spread of RSV in the southeastern U.S.

RSV is very common, said Dr. Laura Wright-Sexton, assistant professor of pediatric critical care and one of the study’s authors. However, it is difficult to predict which children will become seriously ill from RSV.

“RSV is a major contributor to pediatric illness in the PICU,” she said. “We often see children, 2 years of age and younger, who end up with significant viral pneumonia and respiratory failure, due to the virus. The younger patients tend to have more severe disease and a higher likelihood of requiring intubation, aligning with the study data.”

In the multi-state study, about 81% of the babies critically ill with RSV did not have an underlying medical condition. About 24% of the infants needed intubation for breathing.

This year, parents have a new preventative measure to take against RSV. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Beyfortus, a monoclonal antibody injection for newborns and infants during their first RSV season. Children up to age 2 who have pre-existing conditions such as a congenital heart condition or breathing difficulties can receive another dose during their second RSV season.

"I absolutely recommend the monoclonal antibody for all qualifying children, following the CDC’s new guidelines,” Wright-Sexton said. “It is another tool in our toolbox to help protect the children of Mississippi.”

On Aug. 21, the FDA approved Abrysvo, the first vaccine approved for use in pregnancy to prevent lower respiratory tract disease (LRTD) caused by RSV in infants from birth to 6 months. In May, Abrysvo was approved for prevention of LRTD from RSV in adults 60 and older. RSV results in at least 60,000 hospitalizations of adults 65 and older each year.

The CDC and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists have recommended vaccines for pertussis, influenza and COVID-19 in pregnancy to protect mothers and their babies.

Influenza vaccines for this season are available at clinics and pharmacies around the state for eligible adults and children 6 months and older.

Other ways to keep RSV, COVID-19 and other viruses at bay include washing hands with soap and water, avoiding contact with people who are sick, covering mouths with the inside of the elbow when coughing or sneezing, and not sharing cups or glasses.

Staying home when experiencing symptoms is an effective way of keeping others safe. COVID-19 and influenza share some of the same symptoms, including fever, chills, shortness of breath, fatigue, sore throat, congestion, body aches, headaches and vomiting. Change in or loss of taste or smell can occur in flu, but it is more often a symptom of COVID-19.

RSV symptoms include a runny nose, coughing, sneezing, fever and wheezing as well as a decrease in appetite.

Dr. Anita Henderson, a pediatrician with the Hattiesburg Clinic and past president of the Mississippi chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, said the increase in COVID-19 cases coincided with the start of a new school year.

“My advice to parents would be to have your child evaluated for any symptoms including fever, cough and shortness of breath,” she said.

COVID-19 vaccination for young children will lower their risk of COVID-19 and its complications, Henderson said. “There are many babies who have been born in the last year who are not vaccinated and have no immunity to COVID-19. If your child is 6 months or older, we do recommend the COVID-19 vaccine. We hope to have new updated boosters available in the next month, which will help protect against newer variants.”

Adults and children with conditions that put them at elevated risk for complications of viral infections should stay up to date with their boosters, Henderson said. “Children with asthma, diabetes, and other chronic medical conditions should make sure they are up to date on their COVID-19 vaccine and flu vaccine this fall.”

While RSV usually peaks in winter, Henderson encourages families to take precautions now. “We encourage grandparents who are 60 and above to get the RSV vaccine to protect themselves and their grandbabies,” she said. “We are hopeful that the RSV prevention monoclonal antibody Beyfortus will be available soon. It will be an important tool to help protect babies from RSV illnesses and hospitalizations.”

For now, CDC guidelines are bait for, at best, experimental, exorbitantly profitable Pfizer, Moderna, J&J shots that pay, among other juicy perks in federal health bureaucracy, for Fauci's lawyers, his resort home in Maui & Florida and a yacht to get back and forth from the highest paying job in DC.

CDC places the value of your life on par with mutilated lab beagles.

So just wash your hands, disinfect grocery cart handles, get and stay fit and avoid crowds.

As someone who has still never had Covid, Imma' take my chances and live my life unrestricted and without additional precautions.

Seems the common sense approach I have been using thus far is plenty sufficient.

I have no issues with people who prefer to be hypervigilant either.
Live and let live.

Thanks for the heads-up. I’ll exercise an abundance of caution concerning any pronouncements I hear from our trustworthy, reliable, independent, vaunted medical establishment.

So now it is "COVID-19 like illnesses." Good lord. 1,883 people out of a population of 3.3M is .05% of the population. The national hospitalization statistic of 18,871 out of 330M (conservative number) population is a minute percentage at best.

Keep perspective people. Keep perspective.

There is a lot of wishful thinking in this report and analysis.

There is no data that vaccinating children (especially as your as 6 mom.) will help rather than harm them.

There is no data that the new booster will do anything: No data that it cost the infection rate. No data that it will decrease hospitalization rates. No data that it will decrease severe outcomes.

I am pro-vaccines. But this one is rolled out with just about zip data. We do know that 50 adults (studied) had a higher titer of antibodies. That is it.

The rest is wishful thinking.

I know a few people who have had Covid recently. It’s certainly going around. I guess most of the commenters here think the doctors that diagnosed them were lying to them as part of a grand global conspiracy to usher in communism. I don’t buy that line of thinking, but you can’t fix stupid so believe what you want. I’ll be getting my flu shot this week and a Covid booster when they are available. Do as you please, but if you’re sick, stay home!

@11:13
Let us all review the list of lies the “experts” told us last time.

Remember when they said the vaccine would prevent you from catching covid?
Then they said the vaccine would prevent the transmission of covid?
Then they said the vaccine makes the symptoms less severe.
They mocked Invermectin as a “horse dewormer” while it was used effectively all over the world as a covid treatment and the Japanese scientists ultimately proved the efficacy of Invermectin and have included it as part of their covid treatment regimen.

As an suspicious observer, it appears that the Facebook and 4chan conspiracy theorists won all arguments last time!

Sorry for the post and delete. Let me say it again.

It makes me feel good to see there are so many posting comments who say they will avoid the covid vaccine "like the plague". (please excuse that tongue in cheek statement. I know the difference between Yersinia pestis - a species of bacteria with a rat vector that causes Plague, and SARS-CoV-2, which is the early version of a highly contagious Corona Virus, usually transmitted by aerosol exposure) I learned this many years ago in grad school pathogenic microbiology and virology courses I took.

I know SARS-CoV-2 was not around back then, but similar viruses were. The versions of Corona viruses we had back then were not nearly so bad back as our modern version, nowhere nearly the killers that Covid has turned out to be. They did mutate constantly, just were not so likely to kill or cause permanent damage.

All of you who say, "Never in a million years will I get the vaccine" just make the line shorter for me and my wife when we go get our shot in the next couple of weeks. Thanks for risking the Covid hit so that it won't be as long a wait when I go do the right thing that I learned was a good idea a long time ago. Back in the days when I had no real desire to work in a virology lab and risk viral infection.

One of my biggest regrets is getting the two shot Phizer vaccine back in 2021. I am a healthy 40 y/o male and I started having heart issues after getting the shots. Spent about $10k (before insurance) running tests with a cardiologist, and now have a prescription med for the palpitations. I got the shot out of fear, and looking back I now see how stupid I was.

No trial was conducted evaluating a two-dose primary series of the XBB.1.5 vaccine in children 6 months to 4 years old.

But yeah we are the tin foil hatters…

Do you know how insane it is that these “doctors” are recommending a Covid vaccine for children who are almost at zero risk of a serious bout with Covid? It’s insane and should make any reasonable person question what has happened to medicine?

I have two female friends under the age of 40 who had to relearn to walk due to Guillain-Barre after Covid Boosters so you and your wife enjoy Poly. With my own eyes watched a marathon runner become an invalid. After months of therapy they are mostly ok, and yes this can happen with any vaccine.
I am pro vaccine and will likely take the Shingles stab someday but the flu? Covid? Nah, I have had it and lived just fine.
I am healthy, eat right and exercise and I will take my chances with my own immune system rather than volunteer for a covid like illness vaccine or even a flu shot that I don't need.
If I am sick I will stay home and get better.
Pretty common sense to me.

11:52 When you added the phrase "do the right thing" to your scolding, it became instantly clear what "type" of person was writing that screed. Everything you typed before and after that point was immediately read as propaganda.

Look, people can either take or not take all the vaccinations they want. That's their decision alone. Just consider the sources of the guidance you choose to follow. Look at them, and consider which ones have been truthful and which ones have not. Consider which ones allowed you to look at BOTH sides of the argument and make your vaccination decision based on both. As someone wrote above, if you're not allowed to question what you're being told, the information from the censoring side is most likely to be propaganda.

My decision on whether to take the Covid-19 vaccination was based on my inability to find and assess a counterpoint to the prevailing "wisdom." Didn't that bother any of you? There's this novel virus running rampant, and there's only one path being taken to fight it? Really? No early treatment, just wait for a vaccine? I'm not in the medical field, but even I'm smart enough to know something is wrong with that model. Turns out, there's AMPLE evidence now to show my instincts were right.

Again, it's everyone's right to either take or not take Covid shots (CLEARLY not a vaccine), but at least take a look at the countervailing evidence and see if what the singular-track "experts" have been telling you for the last 3 years has actually PROVEN to be true. You owe it to yourself to do that.

My personal opinion on whether to vaccinate, wear masks, etc. or not is irrelevant. What is relevant and factual is that people did contract this virus, people were hospitalized and people died.
In all of your statistical brilliance, let me ask for your "perspective" on this - If you or a loved one (if you have any) were among your .05% quoted calculation, would you lose your perspective and arrogance?

Let us not forget that last time they played Plandemic dictators the global left robbed individuals of their rights for refusing to take the experimental mRNA therapy (not a real vaccine) they robbed people of their livelihoods by forcing them to quit their jobs if they refused the jab. People were scorned and humiliated, utterly robbed of all dignity. People had their bank account frozen. I think the ugliest and most terrifying aspect was not how the “state” acted during covid, but how vicious the leftest hive-mind became. It left me with no remaining doubts about how the left will react when another socialist dictator comes to power. You literally had people like Brian Seltzer frothing at the mouth, giddily demanding that the unvaxxed be denied treatment for illnesses that weren’t related to Covid-19. It was sickeningly un-American. What a little demonic troll he was.

Amazingly the FDA is now stating that Sudafed and other similar OTC meds aren't effective as decongestants. Apparently had been looking into these claims since 2007.

I wonder what they will be saying about the various COVID vaxs in 15 years. One thing they can't say: they didn't prevent infection.

It is amazing that people still are falling for the lies and taking these shots, which have been exposed as a fraud, don't protect anyone, and actually cause harm. My theory is that many of these folks cannot bear to consider the possibility that that they were bamboozled, and further (especially) that they encouraged their loved ones to take a harmful shot. So they keep the blinders on and refuse to consider anything other than what they already believe.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
