Rez Water & Sewer Rates Rising

The Pearl River Valley Water Supply District issued the following statement.

The Pearl River Valley Water Supply District (PRVWSD) Board of Directors on Thursday approved a rate increase for its water and sewer customers, effective for the December billing cycle.

The rate increase is necessary to offset the higher costs the state agency is continuing to pay its regional sewer providers and for increased costs for treatment and upkeep and maintenance of infrastructure, PRVWSD General Manager John Sigman told board members at its September meeting. While PRVWSD supplies its residents with clean water from its own wells, all sewage is sent to be processed by regional providers. “All three regional sewer providers that we rely on to process sewage for our customers have either raised their rates or they are in the process of raising their rates, which unfortunately affects us. We have to ensure we have adequate funds to pay those providers, and we also want to ensure we make plans to have enough funding to account for depreciation of our assets,” said Sigman..

The increase will be through the line-item Regional Sewer Charge (RSC). The RSC will increase from $4.25 per 1,000 gallons of water used to $4.75. A customer who uses 5,000 gallons of water per month currently pays $77.25 per month for water and sewer. Beginning with the December billing cycle, that same customer would receive a bill for $79.75. The increase will average out to about three percent per customer..

Sigman said that there will be no increase in the volumetric charges this year.

Are they all getting raises too? That’s a really big increase in charges. Where can we find out how much they are all paying themselves and how many raises they gave themselves while the rest of us are struggling to buy groceries and buy gas. Do they even pay for gas for their vehicles? Meanwhile every neighborhood on the Rez is filling with rentals, illegals, and teen thugs from Jackson!

Has Shad ever audited the PRVWSD? I've been a customer for the last eight years. Feels like I'm getting hosed (pardon the pun).

Rankin built the new sewer treatment plant because jackson was price gouging.

Now look at what THEY are doing, themselves.

Imagine my (complete lack of) surprise.

Make the Spillway a Toll road. $1 each way. All of the Rankinites traveling it through Ridgeland both ways on work days averages $10 a week and others traveling it to go to Dogwood etc will also contribute. Just an idea to cut down on increases. Could also use that income to maintain the ramps and rocks.

The West Rankin Utility Authority built the new treatment plant and disconnected sewer effluent from Savannah. And thank God they did. Now Rankin County has dissociated itself from the dysfunctional nightmare that is the City of Jackson, placing future residential and commercial development decisions back into the sole control of Rankin County decision-makers and away from idiots and fools and their EPA problems.

Everything is going up. a $.50 increase per 1000gal isn't much. I am typically very critical of Sigman and PRVWSD, but this makes sense. This isn't price gouging either 7:19.

Its a 50 cent rate increase. To give you a comparison, here's Jackson's rates:
water charge: $3.85 per ccf
sewer charge: $5.36 with a minimum charge of $16.08
sanitation charge: $37 per month

Since when is going from 4.25 cents per thousand gallons to 4.75 cents per thousand gallons a 3% increase?

Closer to 12%

8:49AM - they must have learned common core math

8:41 - I think it's the pattern and frequency of the increases that concerns folks not to mention the appearance of a lack of transparency

Inflation is eating into the salaries of the PRVWSD executives and board members. $150-250k a year salaries do not buy what they used to. Yes, most of these increases are going to salaries. But that money is necessary compensation for the hard work of these individuals. If you don’t like it then that’s tough. Utilities always have a total monopoly and there isn’t a damn thing anyone can do about it!

It's not like they are going to a water conference in Paris. Give it a couple of weeks and this will be water under the bridge. Right?

I wonder when PRVWSD is going to start making vehicles crossing the spillway have a bucket with "Trash" labeled on it.

For those that don't know, if fishing below the spillway, or riding in your boat, if you don't have a container specifically labeled "trash" they can and will cite you for it. They being Sigman's PRVWSD gestapo. You can have a trash bag, trash in a livewell, any other receptacle to hold trash, but if it does not specifically say "trash", you can and will get a ticket from them.

My interpretation of this is that salary increases, expenses, maintenance, etc. are not affecting this increase at all. This increase is specifically caused by the increased cost that PRVWSD pays to have their sewer treated. I believe that PRVWSD has sewer treated in 3 different places (Rankin County sewer treatment plant, City of Jackson sewer treatment plan, and Madison County sewer treatment plant). So I'm guessing, that PRVWSD is seeing an increased rate from those 3 providers.

@ 8.43 - Those Jackson charges are totally meaningless to those who neither receive nor pay water bills. And those charges are all lumped into the same bill with a breakout...for the few who receive one and choose to pay it.

@8:43 I'm fairly certain a municipality can't convert an existing road/bridge to a toll road; they can only construct new toll roads.

Wondering if 8:49 and 9:01 read the entire post before commenting or if they just didn't comprehend what was plainly written. The fifty cent increase was to one particular line item for the Regional Sewer Charge portion of the water and sewer bill. A total bill increase of around 3% is an entirely reasonable estimate as was shown in the example given.

8:49. 3% increase in the typical bill ($2.5/$77.25=3.23%). Also, please understand that the PRV can't borrow money like municipalities. They have to pay for their projects from reserves (pay as you go) and can't finance for 20-30 years. Big difference!!! Check out Jackson, Brandon and Flowood's debt!!!

Clue. Obtain one.
What's this, the 2nd or 3rd rate increase in 2 years?

I know I know, just a few cents right?
What was the last one? The one before that?

It's not just PRV. Check the rate increases over the last 2 years elsewhere in Rankin.

But, this is a nothingburger. Nothing to see here.

Relocate to Jackson-
Experience the happiness of free water, sewer and trash pickup.

@ 9:22 - The Board members are just regular citizens appointed by mayors, boards of supervisors and municipalities.

They don't make $150,000. They don't make a dime.

To the Jackson free-water commenters, I received a notice from JXNwater yesterday in the mail basically announcing that in fall water cut-offs will begin for those not paying their bills. I haven't seen a decrease in pressure or a water problem at all since the receiver started making improvements. All of the stupid vitriol about the water system is deprecated. Find some new material, ya' wankers.

@8:19

a notice is not the same as a pipe wrench.

Anonymous said...

@9:08 - There's never been so much as a notice before and that's where it starts. Hide and watch.

Anonymous said...

1:06 that is mighty cocky language. The bar is so low that 'reliable safe water" and 'people paying for the service' prompts you to boast.

I am sad for you, but I do hope you get to keep the appointed man that is cleaning up the elected man's mess.

If your sewer/ water rates are not slightly increasing every year, then your utilities are not being adequately operated and maintained.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
