Shooting Averted at First Baptist Church

The Capitol Police issued the following statement.

On Tuesday, August 1ˢᵗ, 2023, Capitol Police officers responded to a call regarding a disturbance that occurred during an intramural basketball game near 431 North Street in Jackson, Mississippi.

Upon arrival, officers were informed of a subject that had gotten into a verbal altercation threatening to shoot several people who were playing basketball. According to witnesses, after the subject made those threats, he then went to his vehicle, grabbed his backpack, and was making his entry back into the building when an on-duty security guard stopped him.

Officers located the subject near his vehicle shortly after their arrival. In his vehicle, a 9mm handgun was recovered as well as the backpack. The subject has been identified as 38-year-old Jeffery Webb Jr.

Webb was arrested on scene with no incident and charged with making a terroristic threat. “Great
job to all of the officers and security personnel involved in this incident,” said Capitol Police Chief Bo Luckey. “In today’s world, you cannot take any threat of violence lightly. Capitol Police will continue our mission to do all we can to ensure public safety to those within the CCID.

Kingfish note: Webb is a resident of Clinton. The bench warrant states:

First Baptist Church sent this email to its members and once again, did not tell the whole truth.

Good afternoon First Baptist Jackson (FBJ) Family.
We wanted our church family to know that at approximately 10:45 a.m. this morning, a confrontation occurred during a pickup basketball game at the Christian Life Center (CLC). FBJ Security immediately responded to the confrontation and contacted Capitol Police. Capitol Police quickly responded to the situation and it was resolved. Due to the presence of several Capitol Police vehicles on our campus at the CLC, we felt it was important to share with our church family what occurred this morning.
The security of our members and guests is of the utmost importance to the leadership at FBJ. We are grateful for the quick response from our Church Security and Capitol Police which prevented the confrontation from escalating.
Dr. Billy Stewart
Director of Administration Ministry
Yeah, a "confrontation" instead of a guy going to get a gun.

From the FBC website:

"We are proud to be located in downtown Jackson, Mississippi. This is the capital city of the state that many of us have called home for years."

Bless their hearts.

it was not a foul!

5:15 what an idiotic and irrelevant post. The accused happens to be from Clinton and trouble could follow him anywhere. I'm quite sure 1st Baptist Church does not need a blessing of any kind from you.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, 5:15, we need to put up a wall to keep that Clinton riff-raff out of Jackson.

WoW! Simply unbelievable. The Capitol Police saved Jackson for an unrecoverable tragedy today. They averted a shoot at a house of worship. Will you hear anything about this from the city? I'm so thankful that everyday 100's of young black men and women peacefully play basketball at the CLC on well lite, well kept, basketball courts year after year without a hint of danger. What was that old fart (38) doing among groups of young people?

I’m a member of FBC and there is plenty of money there from Jackson members. This guy is from Clinton. They do need to limit the basketball court use of non members

To the good people of Jackson. If you play with fire you will get burned. Thank you.

It would piss me off if I lived outside of Jackson in Mississippi and my taxes paid for police in Jackson. Jackson should paid the State when the Capital Police act on crime off State property.

JPD was seen hurrying in the other direction.

Somebody look up the definition of intramural

Glas someone called the police. Glad they stopped this guy. So many crazy folks running around these days. Thank God for stopping this one before he did something really bad.

Meanwhile the fatties on the JPD were at a donut shop.

Somebody look up J Webb SR at WLBT. Arrest. 75 years exposure. And perhaps research JSU BB roster 2005-9. ?

This was the demise of Broadmoor at Northside Drive.. opened to "minister" to the locals who brought their goodness, then roamed the halls with the churches young ladies after hours... well, you get the idea.. it just won't work.

Should’ve said: opened the “gym” to local ministry.. then..

On a Tuesday after noon at 3:40, a 35 year old man is playing basketball on an outdoor basketball court. What is wrong with this picture?

Remember folks… this is what our horrible mayor and the NAACP are protesting… not individuals like this guy but the Capitol Police and safety. And yes I live in ne Jackson… people in the city want the ccid… it’s the mayor and the liberal media opposed to it.

I grew up playing baseball with this guy...doesn't surprise me one bit.

@8:01 THIS. I also live in Jackson (within the CCID) and have seen tremendous improvements in safety and police response after the Capitol Police took over 1-2 years ago. I've had many conversations about this with fellow Jacksonians, black and white, and I have not spoken to one actual Jackson resident who is not in favor of the expansion of Capitol Police.

The biggest arguments I've heard from actual Jackson residents against Capitol Police are those who are upset that they are not within the expanded CCID area, and thus aren't receiving the benefits of regular CP patrols, etc. I can understand that frustration, but at least CP now has concurrent jurisdiction so if JPD does not answer, you can call CP from anywhere within the city and they are now allowed to respond.

The mayor and his sister's organizations play any card they can to argue against CP because it's one more thing they are losing "control" of. A good leader would be focused on the safety of Jackson citizens first and foremost, regardless of who is getting "credit" for it.

Dang , Jeffery is a basketball game that important you had to take such measures! Are you stupid or just plain dumb! Will you ever grow up?

The church was so kind for many years to allow the community to use their facilities. This is why we can’t go anywhere without fear because of fools like you!

Now if you still have a job, your co-workers are going to look at you cross eyed!

@5:43 - Thats why many refuse to go to big church country clubs.
Pay your dues (tithes), keep the hurting out until they line up with your bad doctrines.

Cliff does not like this arrest.

8:46 Thank you! Right now, I'm about a mile away from where Capitol police patrols. My area will be covered next July when it expands.
I didn't realize we could call them now. I've heard a lot of people say they can't get JPD to answer the phone.
I'm glad to know this.

CAPITOL POLICE DISPATCH 601-359-3125

@10:51. The downside to that is that I believe Capitol PD has around 10 officers on duty per shift. If people start calling for them all over the city, it will pull them out of their primary jurisdiction (CCID). I'm sure they have updated their procedures to cover something like that though.

This guy needs to get a life. If I'm not mistaken, he caused some problems in the basketball courts at Mississippi College and the Baptist Healthplex years ago.

8:46am Why don't you and the business leaders and residents supporting CCID expansion form a movement and demand airtime from local stations show up at City Hall and picket the mayor and his ilk. Even on weekends since I assume you guys work and contribute hence you care about crime.

If more citizens would speak up and demand publicity, it would certainly help garner support from the rest of the state.

Because all we see so far is a bunch of racist City leaders telling us that the city does not want the Capitol Police expansion. What do you have to lose at this point?

Anonymous said...

Is there still a “Jackson Police Department”, or have they just left any important work to be done by the Capitol Police? To their credit, the JPD can still write those “not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign” tickets with the best of them.

The smartest thing 'The Courthouse' (gym) ever did, was to get rid of its basketball courts. That happened a bit too late, though. The crowd it was attracting, had already frightened-away most of the women members, who never returned. And the fact that staff were allowing non-members in, to play basketball, without paying, set a bad precedent.

Why an inner-city church - one which surely should be worrying more about keeping its members, than about community outreach - would even HAVE basketball...

Thankfully, there's already a big Baptist church, on the row of warehouse-style churches across from Madison's airport. And there are already at least two, on the Big Box Church Row leading to Gluckstadt. Is Flora totally churched-up, yet?

Folks, you don't know the full picture. When the altercation occurred the Christian Life Center was finishing up a big Rock Steady Class (exercise for Parkinson Disease adults). If this guy would have followed thru with his threat, there would have been a literal massacre of elderly people who struggle too just more around. What a close call.

I cannot believe this story. Someone has made a big mistake. How many times have we heard about Jackson wanting to put basketball goals on the city streets because it stops the citizens from shooting each other. Now you expect us to believe there was nearly a shooting at a basketball game in Jackson. That cannot be the truth.

Oh, the racist capitol police…lumumubu forever!

I am a member of FBCJ. We should convert the basketball courts to indoor pickle ball courts.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
