Hinds County Sheriff Lee Vance passed away this morning. The cause of death is yet unknown. The Sheriff was a class act, well-liked by everyone. He brought calm to a Sheriff's office plagued by years of turmoil, civil war, and jail riots. His death came unexpectedly. There will be time for the political wrangling later. Today, remember Lee Vance. He was a blessing to his family, his community, and all those around him. Chief Deputy Eric Wall will be Acting Sheriff.
I spoke to him Sunday and he sounded better but good fortune was not to be for him. Rest in peace, my friend. I miss you already.

Wow... This is terrible news. KF, is it COVID-related, since he was a confirmed COVID case?
Wasn’t it disclosed in the previous thread that he was vaccinated and still contracted the virus?
Vance was always friendly to me.
terrible ,,,
The WSJ reported on Monday that 74% of the recent deaths (due to the Delta Variant) in the UK had been vaccinated.
Regardless of the hour and manner of your passing, it is now impossible for anyone to slip away without being tagged as covid related.
Prayers for the family.
12:02: Yep, he was fully vaccinated. WAPT mentioned it in their story announcing that he and Captain Jones both tested positive for Covid. I’m not sure if he had any underlying conditions. Regardless — how heartbreaking and scary! https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.wapt.com/amp/article/sheriff-lee-vance-and-captain-tyree-jones-test-positive-for-covid-19/37116921
Awful news. It’s scary to think how far we are going to let this thing spiral out of control before we take some sensible actions. Far too many are affected by this nonsense.
I've known Lee since college days and through those years he was always an upright and classy individual. Jackson and Hinds County got hurt real bad today. RIP Lee Vance.
Terrible loss for the area. Sheriff Vance had recently undergone major back surgery. Basically had to re-learn to walk. Don't know if that qualifies as an underlying condition, but it was serious.
Saying that you are vaccinated is a long way from proof of actually being fully vaccinated. Only the Health Department knows for sure.
Did not know him personally but always seemed to be a member of our law enforcement community that served with true character and integrity. Have never heard anyone say a single negative thing about the man. RIP and job well done chief.
Of the same bloodline, sad to hear that his last days were with the virus.
Just stop. There is another post right below for covid discussions. Just discuss or honor the sheriff in this post, please.
Lee Vance was a good man. This is a great loss.
Sheriff Vance's passing is a big blow to law enforcement for the metro Jackson area. He came across as a fair and level headed individual as
chief of JPD and appeared to bring back stability to the Hinds County Sheriff's Department. He will be missed.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family as they work through the days ahead.
There was real hope with Vance as sheriff that the department would be professionally managed for the first time in many, many years. The beginnings were in place to bring the Raymond Detention Center into compliance with federal consent decrees. He will be missed. Now I guess the incompetent Hinds County Board of Supervisors gets to choose his successor? That bunch of buffoons couldn't find its collective butt in a dark room with flashlights.
Shit got real. Quick.
End of watch for a class act. This is a terrible loss for his family, metro-Jackson, and Hinds County.
RIP. He was a good man. Not the time or place for yet another Covid argument.
Sheriff Vance was a good dude. All of us, Jackson & Hinds County in particular, did not need to lose him during these trying times for the capitol city.
I hate this so much. I got to know him back in the early 90s working with him when he did a security side gig. Always thought very highly of him and was glad to see him rise to the top. Hate this and feel for his friends and family.
RIP, Vance. As someone who came of age in the same neighborhood as him, I’m fortunate to have known such an honorable human being.
What a terrible loss for our community and the entire metropolitan area. I've known Lee for over twenty years, and have never known him to be anything but professional, courteous, and hard-working. He is an example for all of us to follow in our professional lives, whether in law enforcement or not.
KF, what is the process for appointing a temporary replacement? Does the Board of Supervisors do that? The Governor?
Also, will there be a special election for the next Sheriff? Timeline?
RIP Chief/Sheriff. Praying for your family.
Never knew Lee Vance personally, and never had the opportunity to meet him professionally, but having resided in this area for at least the duration of his law enforcement career, I think Lee was a good man. Saddened to hear of his passing and my most sincere condolences to his family.
Always seemed like a good officer and a nice guy. RIP.
I hated to hear this.
Prayers to the Vance family.
Good man, will be missed. Sad day for Jackson, prayers for friends and family.
Such sad news, and a true loss for Hinds.
My thoughts are with his family as they grieve.
besides personal grief over the loss of a great man/sheriff, this is as bad news as i can handle with all this other crap going on in this town. i have long considered him the last chance for law enforcement in hinds county/cityofjackson. my wife and i always used to sit and visit with him at monthly functions that we both attended. he was such a fine person, i don't know how he'll ever be replaced....looking for the exit
RIP Sheriff Vance knowing how much you are loved and will be missed!
Sherriff Vance was the epitome of class and professionalism. Knew him personally and professionally. In a time when quality, ethical leadership is at an all-time low in Hinds County, this is a tremendous loss.
Text of note I sent to the Sheriff back in 2017:
"Dear Chief Vance,
I wanted to just drop a note with a few words of encouragement and admiration. We ran into each other this past Wednesday at the Chinese place in Center Park, but it was neither the time nor the place for a visit. . . I know how crabby I get when someone gets between me and the food, particularly a buffet.
I no longer live in Jackson, but my business is still here. I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your work and that of JPD. I know your job is thankless, and I am sure, at times, even discouraging. I do not know that, were I in your position, I would not just throw up my hands in despair and go to work in private security for triple the money. I admire your fortitude and courage and wanted to thank you for all you do for the City of Jackson. Please keep up the great work.
With kindest regards, I am
Sincerely,
June 22, 2017"
I got a nice letter of thanks in reply.
Although I did not know the Sheriff personally or professionally, my wish is for him to rest in peace and I will keep his family in my prayers.

I know Lee Vance was a man of integrity because, as Jackson Police Chief, he wouldn't put up with any of Chokwheat's bulls--- & resigned rather than compromise his professional standards.
Losing Lee Vance is losing a truly great American. He was a wonderful person and true public servant. Jackson mourns.
I did not know Sheriff Vance personally, though attended several programs and activities where he was a participant. He was always personable and professional, appeared authentically concerned about the people he served; spoke with insight and conviction; and appeared dedicated to effective, ethical law enforcement. And, he demonstrated a willingness to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with other law enforcement agencies. A public servant with integrity, a rare breed. Condolences to his family and friends. May he RIP.
What a virtous man who spoke truth and believed in our capital city and all its people. You chamopioned truth.
Our love and great gratitude for your
Leadership and goodness
Love to your grieving sorrowful family.
Love! The Gray-Lewis

To refer to Chokwe with a derogatory “Chokwheat” while paying fake respect to Vance is exactly why I can’t stand you. Also, Chokwe doesn’t know you.
I loved Sheriff Vance, a real stand-up guy that will be dearly missed. Can’t say the same for you KF. You can go to hell far as I’m concerned.
If interested, here’s an interview between Lee Vance and Donna Ladd:

@9:38 - hope that made you feel better. However, don't know how you are sure that his respect to Vance was 'fake' but I guess your eminence knows all.
But now you can sleep well tonight.
1:43 - Board of Supervisor appoints a sheriff until the next special election date, which because Vance's death occurred within 90 days of the 2021 date, the special election will be November 2022.
THat is, if Archie will allow a meeeting to proceed without his banging his gavel throughout the procedings.
Impressive amount of positive comments about a man who was a LEO in the Jackson area.
Sad to hear of his passing, and based on the previous comments, I have to assume that this man was one of the last shining lights in the Jackson metro area.
@11:32PM
And I don’t know how YOU know it wasn’t fake.
I don’t know and I don’t care.
Rest In Peace Lee Vance.
Lee was definitely a good guy and am good friend. He, will be missed. Rest in peace my friend.
A servant to his community that will be greatly missed. May God bless his family and comfort them with peace and an understanding over the days ahead. RIP Sheriff.
I see nothing wrong with people paying respects and at the same time asking what the process is for temporary replacement, setting election, etc. People are sad and afraid and have a right to ask. Would also be nice if somebody would answer that question.
I was on the job in a bordering jurisdiction. Interacted professionally with Lee over the years. He was heads above 95% oh his piers as a young officer, then the best as an administrator and leader in later years.
I served on the JPD in the early 90's. He was our spokesman, and whenever he stood in front of the camera, I felt rightfully represented. I can't say enough about how strong his leadership must have been, because i left a couple of years after I caught that bullet.
I will miss this man. He was solid. He was strong and he will be missed tremendously. This is a huge loss for the city and county. Like majorly huge.
