GOP Praises Furling of the Flag

The Mississippi Republican Party issues the following statement regarding the retiring of the Mississippi state flag:

“Ultimately, today is not a day that erases history but a day that faces it and writes its next chapter,” Mississippi Republican Party Chairman Lucien Smith said. “It is a day to find joy in unity and goodwill and to reflect on how far our state has come and where we, as Mississippians together, wish it to go.
“This was an organic change from inside Mississippi, led by Mississippi elected officials. We should be proud of that, regardless of whether outside voices praise or slander our effort. Governor Reeves, Lieutenant Governor Hosemann and Speaker Gunn are to be commended for their leadership.
“We now have a unique opportunity, during a time of unrest in other parts of the country, to do what Mississippians have always done best—come together during times of trial to reach upward and step forward together.”

Georgia flies the actual Confederate Flag. The battle flag by no coincidence has guests appearances in a rather linear timeline to make an easy correlation to why it needed to be removed.

When you allow extremists to control the narrative, expect an extreme response.

The people didn't get to vote like they did in 1991 so this action of removing the state flag was appallingly anti democratic. A minority group of people said this or that offended them so remove it. This will be a open ended issue for the minority.

Thank you SEC and NCAAA

I am a Democrat, but I applaud the Republican leadership on this issue.

great statement and I agree

Banning the racist flag, banning prohibition? It’s been a big year for Tater Tot and his merry ban of republicans.

One thing that replacing the flag should remind you is how easily they can unanimously vote to suspend the state constitution to do things like abolish PERS or any other unpopular political hot potato.

Did anyone notice how the MHP Honor Guard folded the flag like a blanket? Disgusting. When it arrived at the museum it did exactly look like a rumpled blanket. It should have been folded into a triangle and the last fold tucked inside to secure it. Should have brought in a U.S Marine Honor Guard or at least a National Guard honor guard.

Looks like their last leader was running a scam on the poor in more ways than one. I really want to here their comment on that.

Excuse me, but why the hell is Tate getting any recognition here? MSGOP and Tate stood side by side with McDaniel and his ilk. Tate admitted he would only sign it because the vote was veto-proof.

Sorry, but do not let Lucien and Tate take credit for the two leaders that took a stand and whipped up the votes. Try as they might, they're not in the same class.

12:28...incorrect.

Only should need those divisions for the USA flag not the Miss flag.

Anonymous said...

12:28, screw that. It in no way deserved that honor. It's not the American flag. US Marine Honor Guard! That's hilarious! That flag rallied troops to kill US soldiers. I'm sure the marines would love to caress it. Good riddance.

After fighting tooth and nail for years to keep the white supremacists' symbol as part of our state flag, the Repubs. finally capitulate when they see not to do so will cost their big corporate donors a bunch of money. Like the bank robber saying: "You can't prosecute me. I offered to give the money back." I'll pass on heaping praise on the Repubs. for taking decades to do the right thing.

Anonymous said...

I noticed how they folded the flag.
If they were going to be part of that whole mess they could have learned how to fold a flag. Might as well just wadded it up.

Anonymous said...

12:26, the state constitution has no bearing whatsoever on the flag.

And federal law covers abolishing PERS, or at least the benefits accrued up until now. The state constitution has nothing to do with PERS either, but nice scare tactic.

All of a sudden the GOP establishment is on the flag bandwagon.

The "old" flag is gone, and I couldn't actually care less. Actually, I'm fine with it. But lest you get too comfortable, please know this is only the beginning of the fighting.

No, just let the "new(er)" flag - whatever its design - get unfurled and fly in the sun just long enough to get warm, and the required "In God We Trust" (which I believe we all should) will come under fire. This flag will last for a while, at least until the leftist mob comes after it and makes the replacement generation of Republicans uncomfortable enough to where they cave. Again. Just like they do consistently on a national level......and then we'll be deciding on another flag design. And then another, and another.

I hope none of you really believe the current flag retirement finishes the flag issue........it didn't. Mainly, that's because the left NEVER rests, and the right ALWAYS caves. It's been that way as long as I can remember (at least as long as Lucy's been tricking Charlie Brown with the football). And don't think the left doesn't PLAN on it.

As a centrist who leans right, all I can say is maybe this will piss off enough wingnuts that we can bring the Republican party back from the far right and save it from uneducated racists who think their wants and whims supercede the common good.

"It was just the Confederate Flag at South Carolina's statehouse"

"It's just a few racist old Confederate monuments in New Orleans"

"Are you racist? Remove ALL the Confederate monuments!"

"Thomas Jefferson was a slave-owner! Remove him!"

"George Washington was a slave-owner!"

"Andrew Jackson was a slave-owner, a racist and genocided the Indians! Remove him!!!"

"Abraham Lincoln's statue has him towering over a freed slave, it's racist!"

"Teddy Roosevelt's statue looks racist because the Indian behind him looks lesser!"

It's not a slippery slope fallacy anymore. And those of us who fought to protect Mississippi's flag wanted to stop this onslought.

2:38 - that's exactly the logic used they said about illegal interracial marriages, suffrage, the civil rights act, etc. Take that bullshit somewhere else. It was patently offensive not unlike the swastika. Go back in your hole and get bent.

Anonymous said...

@3:07 we can absolutely trace the decline of western civilization to universal suffrage. In just 100 years we have declined further and faster than what took 800 years in Rome. All because debates of logic have been replaced by appeals to emotion.

Just got the call from Richmond:The Robert E. Lee equestrian statue on Richmond Row was removed today on orders from the governor.

FORGET, HELL!

Anonymous said...

Go pound sand 2:59. This flag fight has been going on for more than 20 years. It didn't just start with all the other removals you mention. Georgia changed their flag years ago, Florida changed theirs years ago. In neither case did the sky fall nor did "they" thereafter demand every statue and memorial in Georgia or Florida be changed. Mississippi just took too damn long to do the right thing.

Anonymous said...

@ 2:59.

You left out blowing up the presidents on Mount Rushmore .

Anonymous said...

The statues on Richmond row were beautiful,in fact truthfully the best part of Richmond. We stayed one night and left as did the NSRA Streetrod mini nationals. Never to return. It was not safe then and not now. Wonder if Tater is going to demand our monument in Brandon be destroyed.

Thomas Gentry said...

It's Monument Row.

My contact says that many of the businesses have boarded their their windows and gone to the house. Tourism is dead. The property damage that occured during the mob action and civil unrest is not covered by most insurance companies. Such damages to property during civil unrest are specifically excluded from coverage. There will be no Redemption this time.
That sleeping dragon across the seas has awakened--the USA will tremble come 2025.

Dislike the timing. Same as agreeing to white supremacy and systematic racism, feeding the Black victimhood.
Had to occur, the flag of Jim Crow, voter suppression, white supremacy. The courthouse Confederate statues also need to go also.
I am white, elderly, NOT brainwashed with THE MYTH OF Noble Lost Cause Southern Heritage. Given up even talking to friends about the topic.
To clarify I am firmly against BLM, ANTIFA or anyone wearing a Che shirt. They are out to destroy the country, dream of a large Cuba or Venezuela.
Also anyone with common sense knows removing a flag or stone thing, does not in anyway improve a single citizens quality of life in Mississippi, politicians love these gestures. Saw hwere some black elected officials whined not included in the signing, that is real victimhood.

@1:20 p.m.
Those "u.s. soldiers" were state militiamen invading the soverignty of various states of the Confederacy which stood up to the imvaders and occupiers.

If you are white, it is not possible for you to understand the racism directed toward blacks, Asians, etc. Quit acting like your liberty is being infringed by people who want to eliminate racism from our society. Blacks don’t want to take anything away from you. They want an equal opportunity to succeed, raise a family, and earn a decent living. If you can’t help, at least stay out of the way.

Take another look at the flags of Texas, Georgia and Ally-bammie. Every one of them contains a Confederate image. The SEC and NCAA ain't got the balls to mess with any of those states. Mississippi was and continues to be 'low hanging fruit'.

Anonymous said...

Explain how the flag of Texas has a confederate image. Red, white, blue, with a star. I guess the United States flag is confederate too?? Moron.

MS was the only state with confederate emblem on state flag. Glad it is gone.

The battleships of Mother Russia and the prize ships of the former Southern Confederacy flew the St. Andrews Cross from their mastheads.
Captain Semmes of the C.S.S.Alabama displayed the enemy flag while cruising in international waters and upon citing enemy commerce ships would approach to a point where he lowers the stars and stripes and raises the ST. Andrews flag before boarding commercial to search and destroy contraband found on vessels.
The Wolf of the Deep, he was called. Does John Grisham really think that oral testimony, personal diaries,
Personal memoirs and the dedicated monuments being destroyed are "false narratives as his claims?"
It is he who has been spewing out "false narratives" since moving to Charlottsville, VA 24 years ago.I do not read fiction at all and I cannot imagine why anyone would read Grisham's contrived narrative of two black men raping a ten year old
white girl, if that is what his false narrative "A Time To kill" is all about.
But try as he may, he'll never upstage the "Mother of All False Narratives"--Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin.

Moron? Excuse me! The Bonnie Blue was and is a Confederate emblem. It's the same emblem that flew over the Mississippi Statehouse the day after secession. Educating the willingly ignorant is actually fun.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
