Idiots of the Day

or week, or month, or year.  Some Ole Miss frat boys somehow thought it would be a good idea to go shoot up a sign memorializing the Emmitt Till murder.  Of course, it being 2019, the dumbasses did what the Facebook generation does.....

Credit: Jerry Mitchell & Mississippi Center for Investigative Reporting

Jerry Mitchell reported:

Three University of Mississippi students have been suspended from their fraternity house and face possible investigation by the Department of Justice after posing with guns in front of a bullet-riddled sign honoring slain civil rights icon Emmett Till.

One of the students posted a photo to his private Instagram account in March showing the trio in front of a roadside plaque commemorating the site where Till’s body was recovered from the Tallahatchie River. The 14-year-old black youth was tortured and murdered in August 1955. An all-white, all-male jury acquitted two white men accused of the slaying.

The photo, which was obtained by the Mississippi Center for Investigative Reporting and ProPublica, shows an Ole Miss student named Ben LeClere holding a shotgun while standing in front of the bullet-pocked sign. His Kappa Alpha fraternity brother, John Lowe, stands on the other side with an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle. A third fraternity member squats below them. The photo appears to have been taken at night, the scene illuminated by lights from a vehicle. Rest of article.

Kingfish note: Investigate, give them their due process, and if guilty, throw the book at them.

So, in less than a week you have this, a murder, and a recently-tenured prof taunting the IHL by saying, "Yeah, I totally meant it when I called Trump supporters Hitler youth."

I realize even a strong Chancellor can't stop murders, but the overall public impression over the last few years has been that the inmates are running the asylum in Oxford.

I'm frankly surprised Phil hasn't used the constant chaos up there as cover to shift more support away from Ole Miss.

Anonymous said...

JJ you need to get the facts before you say that these boys shot the sign. Who is to say that the sign had not already been shot up. These boys may have simply been snipe hunting, got tired of walking so much and rested at the sign before hunting some more.

Well boys, say goodbye to whatever future you thought was yours for the taking.

The prof was right. They are Hitler Youth. This is the kind of trash coming out of a lot of the "family values" households.

Kids are idiots. We all are aware of this fact.

However, our society has continuously rewarded bad behavior and this is one more example of how so many parents fail their children.

The first punishment for these dumbasses should be to have their cellphones crushed by a hammer, then a stiff belt put on their behinds.

Where's any evidence that the boys 'shot up the sign'? This sign and this entire area has been the site of vandalism for fifty years or more. I would also like to remind readers that 80% of the so called church burnings in the South over the past 40 years have fallen victim to black activities. Google that yourself. In the meantime, consider the one in Greenville three years ago that was blamed on white Trump supporters but, as it turned out, was the action of a black, disgruntled church member.

Yeah, those boy's families will be forever proud of their years spent studying civil rights at Ole Miss.

After recent events, evidence of men that clearly have no sense wandering around Oxford at night with guns (and supposedly a semi automatic one at that) is troubling. There's also a reasonable chance they were not completely clear headed based on the photo. What is going on? At least their fraternity suspended them, even if UM hasn't.

5:46,
Yup,
Just like the Jewish Cemetery and the Synagogue bomb threats. Trump didn't immediately condemn because he had inside knowledge and he got skewered by the media. And they kept the arrests of the Israeli students very quiet later. Remember Mike Pence went and helped clean up the cemetery but it wasn't enough for the lying media.

Anonymous said...

5:46 and 6:42 Yup. It's that lying media again with their fake facts. Everybody knows that 90% of the facts they present are 100% false and blacks and Jews are responsible for 80% of their own terrorist attacks. These Ole Miss kids are probably just victims of a fake media coverup of their true intention...guarding that sign from black vandals. There's a 90% chance
that this is 100% true.

The kids in the picture heard their dads say:

So the kids were taught that making fun of a skinned alive black kid who did not even cat call a white woman...is acceptable.

Sad.

What’s even more sad?

You know what white people would do to black people if the roles were reversed?

White people know and they are scared to death.

What in the @#$& is wrong with that "university" (wink, wink)? Ole Miss is doing an excellent job attracting high quality students as of late. A fine institution you've got there Mississippi. Will only reinforce our HR department policy of red flagging any resume that includes a reference to time spent at Ole Miss- too much potential baggage.

When "social media" was a new thing, teens and young adults putting photographic evidence of their stupidity, lapse(s) in judgement, outright criminal behavior, etc., before the court of public opinion and not realizing the full implications of doing it was at least understandable to a certain extent. In 2019 however, anyone, even young people, doing so shows an alarming lack of awareness.

Now as to this particular picture, it is true that the picture itself does not prove these idiots shot it up nor does it prove they are racist (real or wannabe) or anything else about their true beliefs on any subject. It does show and serve as strong evidence of their aforementioned lack of awareness on a variety of fronts including subjecting themselves to reasonable accusations of racism _by the entire world_. I am going to guess that they will get an opportunity to learn several valuable life lessons if any of them choose to do so.

Anonymous said...

@9:34 Dressing up as confederate soldiers and waving a rebel flag indicates that there are NO thoughts in young men's minds. The state flag is a reminder of that.

It is a safe bet that quite a few pictures of that sign have been taken over the years. If it was shot up by someone else, then someone should be able to dig up some photos of that sign that will have the same bullet holes.

Anonymous said...

Charged with vandalism, malicious mischief, sure. Hate crime, GTFOH. Throwing this hate crime around gives more weight to the fact that just because the metal sign bears the name of an AA civil rights martyr, it should be a hate crime. Yes the kids were stupid for doing it, even more ignorant for posting to social media, but at the end of the day it is just a metal sign. Calling everything a hate crime every time the AA community gets upset is not getting us anywhere.

Side note: I bet they get to the bottom of this a lot quicker than the nooses found around the capital city before the CHS and Mike Espy run off.

Plain ol' Catfish said...

It's safe to assume they did not shoot the sign and it doesn't warrant any kind of legal action.

However, the optics of it cannot be debated and it will go viral nationally.

They are attending a university in a state that has a confederate emblem on the state flag, they are familiar with the history of the story and chosen to lean with the killers of Emmett Till by posing with guns in front of the sign, they are members of a fraternity with a dark history of displaying and partaking in racist behavior, so how are people supposed to take this picture? Some kind of cute little joke? No - they took that picture as some kind of condescending "f*ck you" message and should be held accountable accordingly

It's no different than the three members of Sigma Phi Epsilon hung a noose around the statue of James Meredith at Ole Miss back in February of 2014. They were kicked out of the fraternity and the chapter was suspended.

It's bad optics for Mississippi, period. What adds fuel to the fire for me, is that a bulk of these kids are out-of-state students that come in with the mindset that "Confederate" imagery is what Mississippi is really about.

That's why it is so important we change the tone and send a message with a new state flag. So that when these kids from out of state - get to Ole Miss, Mississippi State, or Southern Miss - they know from the get-go, that this is a new Mississippi and racist behavior is a thing of the past and will not be tolerated.

@7:00 AM
Do you mean to tell me that Goodman and Schwerner weren't student communists? Because they in fact were part of the communist vanguard attempting to start a race war that could be transformed into communist revolution. Communists in the 1960s and 1970s were most certainly terrorists who participated in bombings as wells as bank robberies and hijacked airplanes.

The media made them martyrs and attempts to hide the communist connections of the "movements" of the 1960s. There was more to their deaths than racism and antisemitism. They saw themselves as soldiers and they wrote as much in their journals.

You know who was in their chain of command? None other than Saul Alinsky himself.

Bash away at Ole Miss all you want.

I wasn't competitive for admission to my home state's university system. I never finished high school, grew up in a home where both adults learned English as a second language, got in Ole Miss without trouble. Got out with honors. Went to professional school. Two of my kids went there for free (Thank You Mr. Barksdale!) both are professionals. Our third child graduated from an Ivy League school and has done well also but no better than our Ole Miss grads.

God bless Ole Miss and the wonderful free market economy that allows the very refuse of the world to prosper. As for the boys with the picture: who gives a shit? Anybody with time to worry about kids and pranks needs more work to do.

Anonymous said...

That image won't be erased from Google for decades.....it will be a potent reminder of how little Mississippi has improved for years to come. Their intent was clear as a bell. Folks, they are broadly SMILING, holding guns, and standing in front of a memorial that is a flashpoint of horrific tragedy in the Civil Rights movement. Oxford breeds this attitude on a daily basis, and it is the disease that keeps Mississippi at the bottom......but OM's endowment approaches a billion dollars. Something wrong with that picture? You bet. Not one Mississippi leader is loundly condemning it on either side out of fear.

Anonymous said...

Yes, there are hoaxes and yes there is " fake news". But the real problem is that too many of us are so intellectually bereft and lazy that they believe such nonsense.

Some of you obviously can't read. This was posted by one of the guys shown in the photo. None of the news stories suggested these guys shot this sign. It was stated the sign has been repeatedly shot and vandalized.

If these guys were just out hunting and were drunk and didn't nothing except decide this would make a great photo, it is not unreasonable to conclude that a college education is wasted on them. Perhaps, they can memorize pages in a text or notes taken in class, but they gain no knowledge from what they can regurgitate in the short term on a test. Words and deeds have meaning and meaning is lost on these yahoos.

And, some of the comments here beg the question , " Do you often take photos at spots where dead bodies were recovered and smile happily in the photo with a weapon?"

That's not how this works...that not how any of this works...

You are correct insofar as the vast majority of the people these boys encounter will not recognize or remember them from this picture and so likely as not, no interviewer, HR person, etc. will recognize them either. But if and when they are vetted, including a online search of their social media history, their names will pop up in connection with this. Now, if it were pictures of some 70s-80s-90s-style wild college party (just "wild," no one really injured and no extreme racially or sexually offensive conduct) or similar, it likely wouldn't affect much, but being connected to something like this in 2019 will - not "might," WILL - set off alarms for many employers. Will it matter if their intended life course is going to work for a family business or small employer in their home area? Nope. Will it matter is they wish to work for a larger, national company, multi-national corporation, reasonably-visible governmental position, or even need a higher-level security clearance? It very likely will matter, both because of the content itself as well as the appalling lack of common sense it demonstrates.

I submit Brett Kavanaugh as exhibit A, and whatever happened there if anything at all, happened long before "social media" existed. If there had been a single picture of him acting in least bit inappropriately with a female, he would not have been confirmed and likely wouldn't have even made it to a confirmation vote.

And this social media post is nothing more than a benign protest of the state of modern non-racist society.

Until privacy laws are passed to forbid snooping into our social media history by everyone except the federal government."

A person cannot have an expectation of privacy when they do something "publicly." If you post something to "social media" as it currently you cannot reasonably have an expectation of privacy. Even if a myriad of changes were made, it would not cover existing pictures/texts/posts insofar as making private what was once public. Plus, most social media platform terms (to which you must agree for access) actually or substantively waive all such claims of privacy. Moreover, access to social media history can be made a condition of employment, legitimate investigation, etc. Moreover still, while it may or may not be a crime to gain access to the social media of others, once that access is obtained (legally or illegally) and the picture/text/post/etc. is reposted to a public forum, there is no effective way to undo it. People do not have any "right" to private free "social media" access so the best course of action is to consider anything posted to social media as "public" and accessible, or at least obtainable by anyone, for all time.

The most disturbing thing about this photo is too many of the comments above.
Some of you believe absolutely ridiculous justifications for past murders. I hope it's just that you can't face that your relatives racists and murderers. One of mine was too but we know he was a hateful human being who was hateful to everyone.
Some of you are obviously racist while claiming not to be ( other white Southerners know the " code" ...usually involves communism and reverence for all things Confederate from those whose families never fought with Lee and likely weren't even here yet). Worse, you hypocritically don't mind our President doing nothing about Communist interference in our elections and schmoozing real Communists. Hell, you don't even know that Russia and North Korea and China are still Communists governments even though they are more economically realistic now. They still have total government control over commerce dummies and you ,too want to give ONE party that same power.
You are a racists when you assume the worst about a race of people because of the color of their skin and don't judge individuals you meet based only on their personal behavior and actions. It is also when you accept behaviors that are clearly disrespectful to an entire race simply because they don't look like you or are culturally different. And, there have always been different cultures and religions in the US and none of them have achieved perfection.

I'm 100% certain that if there was evidence they SHOT the sign rather than just taking pictures with it, they'd be locked up. It's a picture with no context. Maybe they were guarding the sign. Who knows?
I'm with the comment at 920 who said we need more important things to occupy our mind rather than the outrage du jour that this is. You're not alone, friend.

These young men live in a society where standing in front of a vandalized historical marker with guns is acceptable behavior. Just look at the racial overtones being used by the president to attack a congressman because he is rightfully being investigated.

It’s just a sign made of metal.
It’s just a flag made of cloth.
Each mean different things to different groups.
Yet therein lies the similarity.
Hmmmmm.... we have the same feelings about things when it gets down to it.

8:03, if you are going to use the word "statistically", please give the numbers and the source. Otherwise, it means nothing.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
