The Austin, Texas public schools are going to reaaaally relax the dress codes for students because, wait for it, making students wear clothes is apparently racist. KXAN reported:
AISD is proposing a dress code overhaul, after hundreds of parents signed a petition claiming the district’s current dress code is sexist and racist. The proposed dress code is posted below. Check out what is on the list:
The petition reads in part:
“The current district dress code does not uphold the AISD values of equity, diversity, and inclusion. It contains vague language, arbitrary restrictions, and emphasizes bans on clothing that are primarily worn by females and minorities. It also allows for individual schools to create additional restrictions, which leads to further inequality across our district.”
In response, the school district drafted a potential new dress code that would do away of many of the current dress code restrictions.
Under the proposed new dress code, students would be allowed to wear hats, sweatshirts with hoods up, athletic wear and even pajamas. Specifically for girls, spaghetti straps, tank tops, halter tops and shorts and skirts of any length, as long as the buttocks are covered, would be permitted. The draft says bra straps and underwear waistbands could also show under the new rules.
*Tank tops, including spaghetti straps; halter tops
*Pajamas
*Visible waistbands on undergarments or visible straps on undergarments worn under other clothing
*Fitted pants, including opaque leggings, yoga pants and “skinny jeans”
*Hats facing straight forward or straight backward. Hats must allow the face to be visible to staff, and not interfere with the line of sight of any student or staff.
*Hoodie sweatshirts (wearing the hood overhead is allowed, but the face and ears must be visible to school
Cleavage, did someone say cleavage?
"However, cleavage should not have coverage requirements. All items listed in the “must wear” and “may
wear” categories below must meet this basic principle."
Kingfish note: The headline was meant to be tongue-in-cheek. It will be a shock to see this dress code pop up in JPS. However, if I was a minority, this dress code and the justifications for it would really tick me off. The underlying message is that minorities are not capable of properly clothing themselves and so must be allowed to run around half naked. Yeah, not perpetuating any stereotypes there, are we, Austin? Progessive, indeed.

Don’t dress like a fucking retard and this would not been an issue.
Pajamas? Who in their right mind would let their kid wear PJs to school?
Then again, looking at some of the ladies in PJs, hair rollers and house slippers shopping at Wal-Mart in Ridgeland on any given day...
Exactly, if they just dress like 60 Year Old white dudes, we would all be more comfortable. What's the big problem?
It's a culture problem, not a dress problem.
In most communities nowadays, there are a significant number of young people, who are often parents, who judge themselves and each other on the extent to which they can "push the envelope". They regard ANY Community Standard or restriction on behavior, except of course those affecting their political affiliations, as barriers to their free speech which they must attack. If they are successful they parade themselves as brave champions unafraid to stand up to the "establishment". If they fail they lose nothing since the standards they were attacking weren't hurting anybody anyway. Look around you they're already here. They are not defending any race, religion, gender, or real ideology. They are just bullshit crusaders who need something to fight without risking injury.
I want to say it’s the parents responsibility to not allow their kids to dress inappropriately but I know many parents don’t care as some probably dress trashy themselves. Austin, Texas is not a good place, they’ve embraced extreme liberalism. Yes, I see this coming to Jackson.
It's a blue city; 'nuf said.
WOW! That's all I can say. No, wait . . . I will say something else. This is just an act of further degradation of society and its mores and values.
Just like the Austin's unofficial motto, "Keep Austin Weird"
Keep Austin weird, i guess.
I think a clothing allowance would be appropriate. Just kidding! Really setting the kids up for failure. You can’t give handouts and not include clothing a freaking clothing allowance!
Government, when we know better we do better!!!
They could solve the “problems” they cite by requiring uniforms be worn.
I grew up in Austin, for the most part, and lived there on and off over the years. It's great city. Like a lot of other cities, some leaders take it upon themselves to be the self-appointed social engineers and/or social workers-in-chief. When I was a kid living on the west side of Austin, we got bussed across town to go to school in the barrio (Mexican ghetto) on the east side. Apparently, somebody's idea of equality was to make mostly-white seventh-graders spend almost 3 hours a day on a school bus.

Bet none of them will be going to Harvard dressed like that.
School systems like Austin, San Francisco, Denver, etc. are dominated by liberal college educated spoiled brats and their children. After they have done their wild thing and finished their experiments in "self-expression", they will go back to their trust funds and gated communities and become the conservatives of the future. Jackson Mississippi on the other hand, is dominated by largely semi-literate, poverty stricken, dysfunctional types who will only become more dysfunctional if not provided with discipline and structure in their lives, especially their schools. But since the first group also controls the Democratic party, Jackson will probably follow Austin like sheep to the slaughter...
so a room full of boys wearing tanktops with their asses hanging out their sagging pants while the girls wear hoochie mama clothes with their boobs falling out. Um, Ok.
...nor to a successful job interview
11:54 = racist
LOL LOL LOL
JPS is changing their logo and brand. Them yewts are going to get themselves one helluva quality education now!
@4:15 PM = race baiter.
ALL dress codes are racist!
Please tell me what is not racist these days! It’s like the little boy who cried wolf. When a real racist situation comes up, no one will care.
Would Lewis Farrakhan's influence result in an improvement?
I went to school at Forest Hill. Across the street was a barber shop. The asst. principle Eva Ferguson would not hesitate to walk a guy to the barber shop to have his ears lowered if needed.
THAT was enforcing the dress code, any questions??
methinks 11:54 is the race baiter with his/her reference to “old white dudes”.
Dress code = "fashion apartheid"
I have never understood why public school students could not wear uniforms. They could be sold by the school system with little markup. The price would already be low, due to the high volume whole sale discount. It's not rocket science. Solves a slew of problems for students, parents and administrators.
Who would be the ones to require uniforms? After all, have you seen the way JPD staff and board members dress? Hell, it's the norm. Further pushing 'these people' into the box they created for themselves. Then they'll bitch about being boxed up.
Wait...I forgot to mention their roll models on the radio, city council, down to city hall, at the club....
When I grow up I want to dress like Enoch Sanders. He speaks for me.
It’s pretty tough for Mississippi to be critical of any other education system in the world given our track record. Maybe we should take some notes instead of whining about the educated liberals.
10:02 - the subject here is JPS. Please tell us where, in that system, we can find these educated liberals of whom you speak.
